On the lighter end of the Maverick line, the 86 C has a lot of benefits and not a whole lot of limitations. At 86 mm underfoot, the Maverick 86 C strikes a nice blend of carving performance and all-mountain versatility, and this will be excellent for intermediate and advanced skiers who are looking to make the most out of their ski day. In the longer length, the skis actually stand at 88 mm underfoot, so they're competitive with the other ∼88's on the market today. The poplar wood core is a good place to start for sure, since the skis are fairly light and simple otherwise. There's a good amount of positive camber underfoot, so turns will be snappy and energetic, which is great for a lot of skiers from multiple levels and backgrounds. Steeps, bumps, trees, or groomers, the Atomic Maverick 86 C can really handle it all quite well. For the groomers, the poplar wood core is a good place to start, but Atomic doesn't stop there, they add carbon stringers to the core, stiffening the skis and making them more responsive when loaded with energy. There's a metal plate underfoot that makes the torsional stiffness of the ski a lot stronger, and while this plate is more of a binding retention and reinforcement plate, it does have a fair amount of performance value as well, and those aspects do make the ski feel a lot more substantial than the lighter weight may indicate.

 We've had conversations like these before and I think there's a strong argument to be made that there are actually more skiers out there that would benefit from this feel and this construction. We know a lot of you guys, a lot of our audience, are pretty avid skiers, so maybe you don't fall into that category. Maybe you do. Great intermediate ski, but also like a great ski for a less aggressive advanced skier

 You know this ski is only 86 underfoot, so for a ski in that width range I would say that that's a longer or a greater amount of tip rocker than you typically see. It is a directional ski, but we'd still get again like more more tail rocker back here than you typically see in this width range. There's not a lot of splay. You know it's not a twin tip shape

 The carbon is kind of integrated into the fiberglass layer of the ski, but it keeps it quite light. All the Maverick skis are impressively light. This is a 184 and even at this length the ski comes in at 1700 grams, so that's pretty cool if you ask me. You know no metal in this ski, but still a pretty darn supportive flex pattern there

 The Maverick line is still relatively new for Atomic. Back again for 2023 or the 2022-23 ski season. No structural design changes to these skis, just a nice graphics refresh. So performance and all that good stuff carries over from years past, but hey they look new so that's fun

The Atomic Maverick is just an objectively better ski. Will ski well in just about any terrain, will float better on deeper days, playful, lots of energy and pop coming out of corners at any sort of speed, and will be a great ski to progress with. It'll likely be tougher for you to ski straight out of the box, but like i said, you're going to be skiing enough that you'll quickly get used to them. The only other ski recommendation that's immediately coming to mind would be something in the Salomon QST range

Hello all!

After 15 years and a move to the mountains in BC, Canada, I'm ready to take on skiing again! Buying a season's pass and will probably visit 3-4 mountains here in BC and expect to ski about 1-3 times a week. I've narrowed it down to the below 3, mostly based on price/ availability currently:

2021/22 Atomic Maverick 86C - $385 "new" **without** bindings   
2021/ 22 Rossignol Experience 82 Basalt - $600 "new" with bindings  
2021/ 22 Rossignol Experience 76 - **Used** \- $300 with bindings

It has been a while since I last skied but I expect to still be riding only green and blue runs, staying on the groomed trails for the most part. I wouldn't say I am a complete beginner but also not a true intermediate as I realize I lack some fundamentals like effortless parallel turns. Nonetheless, I hope to ski and learn a lot this year! 

These first 2 picks are just the cheapest options for me to get going with the local clearance stock available. I would expect the Atomic Maverick to come in around $550 with bindings. It is in my shortlist as I've heard the mountains here get a decent amount of powder days so maybe the 86 would help in that sense. On the other hand, I hesitate on the slightly larger turning radius of the Maverick vs the other 2, unless this difference would not be very noticeable.

The Used Rossignol 76 is just a great price point and I'm tempted because of that. Unsure if a ski that narrow would feel too unstable at any moderately fast speed. At half the price I'm curious if I should just try it out for a year or skip the used section all together. 

Also to note, I have 2 ski swaps I will be going to next month but as the 1st 2 skis are clearance stock, I am inclined to purchase them in store just to make sure I have a relatively affordable ski to use when the mountain opens. I would hate to not find anything at the swap and pay full retail price for skis.  
The ski swap sale sounds a bit chaotic with me having to make a bit of an impulse buy with little research so buying early seems safer to me

If anyone has any other skis they can recommend, I'd love to know as well!

 Hi, I'm Adam and I just got done skiing the brand new Atomic Maverick 86 C. Great ski for that athletic beginner up to kind of mellow intermediate who wants something that's got a little bit more freeride feel. Maybe if you're going to be doing most of your skiing west of the Mississippi this is a great option for you for that beginner. 86 underfoot gives you a nice ample platform for rolling through the couple of variable snow conditions

 This ski just for me is very easy to ski. It's easy to control, you can skid it, you can slide it, you can carve it if you needed to and again when the conditions get a little bit challenging for you, some fresh snow, some bumps, some crud, this thing really rolls right through it. Very easy to ski, very forgiving and a great game improvement tool.

 It comes without metal. And so that is meant to reduce the swing weight and make the ski more maneuverable, easier to get in and out of turns. At 86 millimeters underfoot, this is on the narrower side of all mountain but still shares that same shaping and profile with the wider skis in the Maverick line

 So really, really quick edge to edge, great in the bumps, great in the trees, snappy on the groomers and not too demanding to ski. Pretty big range of skier type will enjoy this. You know the advanced novice I would say, up through the intermediates and into the lower advanced even lighter weight experts would enjoy this ski. So there's a really big range of skier type and application for this ski and just the light weight, easy turning nature of it really put it to the front of this non-metal mid-80s group
