 Hello, and welcome to Mix Your Sound. Today, I'm going to review a product from Audient, the iD22. This is the product, this is the interface, this is an audio interface. Audient claims to be a high-end audio interface

 So this is the back of the unit, this is where you plug the transformer, power supply, this is the headphones output, which is 5 and 6, USB connection, then we have optical ADAT in and out, which is cool, a great expansion, then this is the main outputs 1 and 2, this is what I connect to my main speakers over here, then 3 and 4, if you have a second pair of speakers, or actually you can use it to do another QMix, then we have, this is really cool guys, yeah, then we have send and returns, DI, and then we have input 1 and 2, which is mic preamp or it can be line input. Okay guys, so here we have the software of the unit, input 1 and 2 here, basically is the input from the unit itself, then all the other inputs that you can see here is because I have the external preamp with 8 mic preamps there, and I have engaged optical in basically. Over here, on the top side, on the right side of the software, you can see that we have output 1 and 2, and then you can address to different, let's call it places, so basically you can address the main mix for output 1 and 2, or you can address for output 1 and 2 alternate speakers, or QMix, QA, QB, or the DAW mix, same thing to output 3 and 4, same thing to outputs 5 and 6.   Amazing sound quality for a single user, if a bit too dependent on its software controls. Very bad experienced with multiple user accounts.

Not good for multiple Windows Users

 So I can label all my inputs permanently depending on from what mic pres they come or how I have it routed directly through to individual microphones, which is great. Let's put that back to mic one. So let's hook up some mics into this lot and see what we get. So here's my session in Pro Tools built Pro Tools 11 and you can see if I go over to the mixer, I've got six channels, the kick and the snare are using the two internal preamps

 So this time we'll track some guitar. So the iD22 from Audient, is it just another interface? Well to me, no it's not. First of all, it's built like a brick outhouse. Now I know lots of other manufacturers are saying that at the moment but this thing is seriously, seriously solid

 Hope you enjoyed that look at the Audient ID22. I really hope there's a lot of other things in this sort of line coming from Audient. Certainly their preamp quality speaks for itself. I love the ASP008 and hopefully there'll be some more stuff coming from them soon along these lines

 For me the killer feature is the addition of the ADAT optical port to be able to allow you to go from just another two channel, two out, four out interface to being a serious 10 input interface. We're talking drum kit. We're talking real band territory now. There have been plenty of records that were made on less than 10 simultaneous record tracks

Audient iD22 Review

  I definitely won't be buying a third.  Unfortunately, I haven't found another preamp with the routing and signal path flexibility of the iD22, so I may keep it on my desk for that reason, but - at least while the rest of the unit functions - run my signal through another pre-amp with phantom power and then into the return inputs on the iD22.  Two stars for its spectacular routing flexibility and excellent sound, but minus three stars for its lack of longevity and repairability. An 18 month life is not acceptable

Great features, terrible longevity

 Okay, rear panel, sort of relatively busy, but taking it through logically. We've got combi sockets for the inputs to channel one or two for microphone and line inputs with a dedicated DI on channel two. Send and return pair for each of the channels. And just moving along this way a little bit, we've got two sets of monitor outs for the main and alternates

 It's a desktop format, comes in a metal chassis. It's USB2 connected, and it's got two of Audient's own microphone preamps built into it, and they're the same units that go into the large sort of format consoles that Audient make. One of the channels has a JFET driven DI on it, which promises to be quite interesting. And as well as the analog in and outputs, it also has an option of either SPDIF or ADAT digital connectivity

 As always with an audio interface, you have got to make sure that the functionality does what you need, but also do remember that because you've got that digital connectivity, you can add channels if you need them, depending on your needs and your budget, but purely based on sound, this is a step above. Great piece of kit, well done audience, it's been a pleasure to review. So Andy Picker with Guitar Interactive Magazine, and I'll catch up with you next time.

 The preamps and converters in the ID22 are definitely a step above what you would expect to get in an audio interface. It just has that quality of making everything that you put through it. It comes out sounding just like it goes in, but somehow a little bit more euphoric, a little bit bigger, a little bit richer, just a little bit better. So utterly and completely recommend this based purely on the sound quality

Right now I’ve got a 2nd gen focusrite Scarlett interface and I’m looking to upgrade. Three big guns in my rig are Matriarch, Polybrute and a linn9000 whenever it comes back from the shop.

Primarily I care about 2 things:

Preamp quality
DAC quality

I don’t care about:

Multitracking, 2 or 4 ch input in fine.
UAD plug-in ecosystem. 

To give you a little background: I’m a certified nutter, the system right now already has a power filter costs similar to a mid range UAD interface itself (worth every damm penny).

I’d like to keep this under $1500.

Let’s talk interfaces! Need to upgrade.

  So I liked the latency but didn't like the digital problems this presented. Unless you are going straight up ADAT to ADAT.

Very Good for the Price Range

Sorry for the long post / rant / sob story.

Where I live (Pakistan), there are a handful of stores that sell "pro" audio gear (at exorbitant prices) which mostly consist of Behringer and Focusrite products that cater towards the needs of recording enthusiasts and live sound engineers. The truth is there isn't any market for high-end gear, mostly because the handful of people who are interested in it, or who can afford it, usually buy it from abroad and bring it back themselves or ask their family/friends to get it for them (as direct imports are taxed heavily).

So, in 2016 when I had a friend returning from the US i asked him to buy me an Audient ID22, which had great reviews and was much talked about online. It cost me $550 at a time when my salary translated to $400 per month.

Since I was moving up from recording in a bedroom with a Behringer 302USB, and setting up my dream home studio, I didn't hurry to unbox the ID22 when I first got it. Instead, I waited a couple of years, set up a room with some treatment and accumulated gear I thought would help me set up a decent studio. I bought a couple of mics (Shure 57, SM7B and MXL V67), studio monitors (Yamaha HS8s), ADAT Preamp (Octopre MKII), headphones (ATH-M50s), a Radial DI and Reamp Box and other things like cables, pop filter and a Cloudlifter (because the internet told me to).

So, finally, last year I set up the home studio... and it was great. I mean this was everything that I wanted. I made like 30 demos in 6 months. I even saved up and bought the Sonarworks Reference Mic bundle (thanks to another friend returning from Germany, Thomann ftw!). And, everything was perfect. The mixes were coming along great. I couldn't be happier.

Till of course, one day when out of the blue the volume on my studio monitors got blisteringly loud and distorted. I immediately turned them off but the crackling / distortion continued playing through the headphones. So I turned my PC off, disconnected the monitors and headphones from the interface, restarted Windows, disabled Sonarworks (as I thought this was the culprit), checked for Windows updates (none) and found nothing out of the ordinary.

I waited a couple of days and hooked everything back up, things seemed to be working fine but after about 30 mins I noticed my recordings had distortion on them. A few moments later i heard a small pop from one of my monitors, then a little crackle. So i turned everything off again. And began searching online for the  problem till I stumbled upon a gearspace thread where it said many other users faced the same problem with the ID22. Apparently there is a capacitor which fries out over time and there seems to be a design flaw with the heatsink being too close to the said capacitor and what have you. The fix is pretty simple as well, but I haven't had the courage to solder in a new capacitor yet.

The point is the manufacturing quality sucks. Even at $550 it sucks. Which is a shame. Especially for someone like me, who lives far far away from the target audience of these products. I reailse this wouldn't bother most people because they would simply return the unit, an option that I don't have, nor can I exercise, because stupidly enough I expired my warranty period thinking wtf could possibly go wrong.

The sad reality is I am back with my Behringer 302USB and frankly enough it is a nightmare to go back to. lol. But it still works and after 8 years and having paid too much for it at the time, it still does what it is supposed to, which is not what I can say for the Audient.

Now, while I'm thinking about replacing the capacitor and contemplating how long it would take me to save up for an RME, Motu or a UAD interface, the truth is I haven't been able to enjoy anything in the past few weeks because of that damn capacitor. I understand that gear can break at unexpected times and I'm sure some of you have had far more valuable pieces of gear break on you at the worst of times but I thought I'd share my experience just to share how frustration things can get when the ~~levee~~ gear breaks.
