Audio Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Microphone - Out Of The Box at Front End Audio

  The reason I gave this microphone 4 stars is because of the shock-mount design. The only thing between this microphone and the floor is a rubber band, and it's not as easy to place this microphone in it's shock mount as it should be. I feel like that's something that you should be able to get right without very much thought, sort of like plugging in a mic cable, yet I find myself doing it wrong sometimes and having to fiddle with the silly rubber bands. Even when it is placed properly it sort of sits there lopsided

This is a very high quality microphone for it's price range, and it's one I believe I would keep on hand even with more expensive microphones available. I find it to be a very neutral sounding microphone without that often high-pitched harshness people complain about on some inexpensive microphones. It's become my new favorite vocal microphone for myself, ahead of an SM7B and an AKG 414-XLS, which are other microphones of the mid to high priced range a home-recording enthusiast might be considering. I find the low-end response for vocals to be very pleasing on my voice, and with no sibilance issues

Quality and reliable microphone

 So let's check out how it sounds. Okay guys, so now we have the AT4050 set up as a pretty typical voiceover mic. So just talking a bit for a moment so you guys can hear its tone on my voice as compared to the shotgun mic we were using in the video earlier, that was a dynamic mic. Obviously, this is a condenser and a very modern sounding condenser at that, so you're definitely gonna hear a lot more presence in the top end, you're gonna hear a lot more detail, you're gonna hear a lot more robustness and sort of forward sound to the whole thing overall

 But what do you guys think of Audio Technica's mics? Have you used the 4050 or this CM5 variant in particular? Do you like their mics in general? Do you not?  It is a large diaphragm mic. It does require phantom power, but yeah, kind of the hallmark of this mic to me and a lot of Audio Technica's mics is just a very modern sound. It's got a really present detailed pop end, a bit more kind of rolled off in the in the lower spectrum, which is going to be great for sources like modern vocals, so if you're doing pop or R&B or hip-hop rap vocals, that kind of stuff, or if you're doing like real modern rock, maybe guitars or drums, anything like that, this mic is going to be a really excellent choice because it has that really modern vibe to it. So what we're gonna go ahead and do is head out to the tracking room

 I've used these mics with good results in my project studio, on vocals, guitars, and hand percussion, and actually earned a major film festival award for music I created in that studio. I think the mics sound particularly good on female voices (as a number of reviewers have noted). This mic is just TRUE and clear, with a bit of color on the high frequencies giving it an airy feeling, with a soothing low frequency that needs little to no EQ when used for a radio news type of broadcast, just add the right compressor and you may lift the lower bands very little, for singing you may want to use multiband comp but because every voice is different, all the choices of plugins as well as pre-amps will vary. This mic will perform; it delivers!!!

 The way I see it, if you're operating on a budget, you can't necessarily afford a whole slew of microphones. What you need is something that delivers clarity so you have flexibility later. If that's what you're looking for, you'll love this thing.

 It's just enough to bring out a little gravel in a voice, or some ring in a guitar. Before purchasing, I spent days listening to microphone shoot-outs through HQ speakers to help me make my decision. That was pretty difficult -- those shootouts can be pretty bad. I was looking for something with clarity that wouldn't color the sound too much -- or at least would have some warmth

 The frequency distribution sounds very flat and transparent, with perhaps a little boost on the high end. But that boost is absolutely not cold, not harsh, and not overly sibilant. Crystal Clear, Transparent, and a Broad Sound - Love it.

  The 4050 has selectable patterns, cardiod, omni and figure 8. I normally use the cardiod setting but have found the omni setting to produce fabulous recordings where there is excellent acoustic space and related sound.  Highly recommended if you are looking for a faithful recording that does not provide significant coloration. Construction is first rate with a black finished solid brass body and excellent electronics and workmanship throughout
