 Quite a handful needed to be skied at Mach 10 in order to maximise the performance. But the tweaks the Black Crows have made to this enable skiers to go a little bit slower, it's a little bit more playful, it's a lot more enjoyable. You can ski it at slower speeds on piste, short radius turns, you can go off piste and open it up. In chopped powder, at a little bit more speed, the stability is exciting but not terrifying

 Available in a boys version and a birdies version for the girls. This is a redesign, tweaked redesign, of the old Anima, which was, to be honest, a bit of a beast. Quite a handful needed to be skied at Mach 10 in order to maximise the performance. But the tweaks the Black Crows have made to this enable skiers to go a little bit slower, it's a little bit more playful, it's a lot more enjoyable

SkiKitInfo.com tests the 2021 Black Crows Anima freeride & big mountain ski. This season they’ve also introduced a women’s version, the Black Crows Anima Birdie, which is the same as the men’s but with a different colourway & only available in the two shortest lengths.

Andy Townsend, IFMGA International Mountain Guide, BASI ski instructor & Head of Skiing at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre, was on-hand to test the Black Crows Anima for you.

This is beefy big-mountain style freeride ski has been greatly improved for this season, with a wider tip & tail giving a tighter turn radius & improving the skis versatility. It’s still 115mm underfoot, giving a lot of flotation. A long tip rocker & moderate tail rocker help to lift the ski, keep it relatively nimble & allow for freestyle riding.

The Anima has a full poplar wood core enhanced with layers of carbon & Kevlar, improving performance & energy from the ski. Black Crows has strengthened the flex so this ski’s still incredibly stable when you open the throttle on bigger lines.

Last season’s Anima was a real beast & to get the most out of it you had to ski hard & fast. Not so with this season’s version, which is eminently useable even at lower speeds & tighter turn shapes.

The strong sidewall, with a little cap, combined with a good amount of camber delivers enough grip on firm snow.

An excellent ski for advanced to expert level skiers wanting a fat freeride ski that’ll also get them down the groomed runs safely.

Sadly, the Black Crows Anima Birdie is a lightweight ski made of only poplar, fiberglass, and some carbon & kevlar strips, so your screws are ripping right through that softer material. In short, I recommend that strong tele skiers always mount NTN bindings on skis that have a bit of metal underfoot, or at least a very strong wood core.

If somebody has a idea how I can prevent my telebindings falling of my skis tell me. This has happend few times already...

 So if you do want to use it for backcountry, you're just going to have to be aware that it is going to be a little bit more weight going up, but still going to get really nice performance on the way down. So check this out at SkiEssentials.com. This is the 2022 Black Crows Anima Birdie

 Again, that increases the maneuverability, does give this wider bodied ski a little bit more snap and pop and energy out of the turn, reduces the swing weight. It is kind of milled down into more of a trapezoidal shape. So that helps with like just removing material that you don't really need when you're in deeper snow. It's 115 millimeters underfoot and generates a 19 meter turn radius

 But that's it, you know, wonderful, wonderful deep snow resort powder ski from Black Crows. You know, not too much of a touring application on this just because it is a bit heavy. So if you do want to use it for backcountry, you're just going to have to be aware that it is going to be a little bit more weight going up, but still going to get really nice performance on the way down. So, Poplar Woodcore, we also get carbon and Kevlar, basically struts or stringers through the ski to add a little bit more energy, a little bit more responsiveness

 But we still get plenty of tip rocker in this ski, you know, the rocker profile starts about where my hand is, very similar in the tail, plenty of tail rocker back there. You know, if you need a massive ski and you want to be able to ski switch and backwards and stuff like that, Anima is a great choice with all that tail rocker back there and the twin tip shape. And yeah, just like I said, a really good blend of maneuverability, a surfy feel, and still really, really powerful and really stable too when you want to ski fast and hard and aggressively. Certainly wouldn't be surprised if you saw like a competitive big mountain athlete choose this ski, although it is really wide, so you'd want to be choosing it for a, you know, a course or a venue with some pretty soft snow on it, but there's not much out there in this width range with this much power and stability

 If you're in the deep snow there's really no need for metal edges from here on back on the ski or up forward so they just remove that material and off we go. They call it a semi-cap, it's definitely a kind of a thinner vertical sidewall and then a little bit of a step up with that cap. It's a gradual trapezoidal shape that runs along the edges here kind of above the sidewall and that's just a little bit of a weight saving, a little bit more maneuverability and quickness out of this ski but that's not really meant to be the strong suit here. One of the other things that sticks out is the amount of positive camber underfoot in a ski like this so it does have that energy to it, very kind of wavy in terms of the rocker profile long in the tips and tails and then with positive camber underfoot so when I decamber it and squeeze it it's even hard to do so, the rocker starts right about here so very long, long and low rocker and then more of a powder taper shape as well so the wider part of the ski closer to the midpoint of the ski and that kind of equates to that shorter turn radius per this width and length. Then decambering and then that tail rocker starts pretty far back in the ski right about here so long tail rocker, pretty decent splay, not going so far as to call this a twin tip due to the shape and build but a turned up tail and that gives the ski a lot more playfulness on the exit of the turn so yeah pretty severe splay for a ski like this and that's going to get you popping in and out of the fresh snow
