I have a Black Diamond Spot 350. Three LEDs: flood, spot light and red flood. All three have adjustable brightness. It takes three AAA batteries and costs $30

I've looked into some but the lumen numbers scare me. Don't get me wrong I love a huge output, but I don't want to be impossible to look at / blind oncoming cars / blind myself if I'm working on my car at night. Can anyone with experience let me know if this is an issue and any recommendations? Thank you!

Interested in a headlamp but don't want to blind fellow night walkers

 The only way this model is an improvement is in the brightness and blacked out logo. Everything else is frustratingly bad. All you have to do is call up a customer like myself who actually uses the product and this could've been remedied in design.

Black Diamond just never gets it right

This headlamp is pretty darn bright, perhaps too much so for my needs.  But it does adjust even though not as easy as earlier models.  I do like that it will turn on however I leave set.  The tap thing is silly, doesn't work right, and pretty much pointless

  The red night setting is fine, and the flood setting works good.  If you like a really bright spot setting it that.  The headlamp also has blue battery level indicator lights on the side.  I personally don't like this feature, but some may find it useful

Nice light but changing the functions is difficult. Headband also does not stay tight and slips over time needing adjustment frequently.

Bought for fishing, and it was pretty terrible for that, BUT for hiking and night walking I can see that this would be a very good choice.  Having spent some time outdoors in various environments I would say (with a small amount of qualification to do so) that this has the functionality needed to merit a pace in your kit. The main beam is good enough to give you the road ahead, whilst the secondary white light is sufficiently diffused to make for in-camp activity ease. Not sure what the red is for - I’ve never actually used it, but then I’m not in the military or aircraft directing game

 I can't comment on the full battery life but most testers have said it is slightly less than what is claimed on the box. I will say the build quality feels slightly cheaply than Petzl, the tilt adjustment makes that loud cheap clicking sound that you would hear on a far cheaper headlamp. I honestly don't think it is worth $35 dollars but there isn't really much competition for the features that the lamp has.

This a a very bright light with several different modes and dimming capabilities. From a micro-controller standpoint, this is the most advanced headlamp that I personally have seen. The locking feature is especially useful for trips to remote areas so you don't inadvertently drain the battery in your pack. The significant waterproofing rating is similarly important

I work as an aircraft mechanic and often find myself in dark confined spaces. This headlight is great for those situations. It’s bright, lightweight, and the on/off switch is big and easy to find. All 3 modes are very useful; even the red light mode is great for dark cockpits prior to running an engine when you need to see but want to retain your night vision

 Overall, great light. I’m very happy with it and look forward to using it for years to come.

That said, having a separate button for the Red lamp, and having brightness memory, are both great improvements over previous models

I have a few other lamps from BD that I love and have had no issues with, but this one somehow was overlooked in the quality dept, which is unacceptable being such a critical piece of gear.

This headlamp stopped working mid-trail in the fog and pitch dark, with fully charged batteries. Some connection inside the headlamp has become loose, as reseating/fiddling with the  batteries did nothing, but bumping it aggressively causes it to flicker back to life..

Gave out when needed most

Bought this after losing my previous BD Spot headlamp. This one is even better! It's easier to use now with the two buttons instead of just the one on the previous model, though it can still be difficult to operate sometimes, especially with really thick gloves. I would find my self still just clicking through until I found the setting I wanted to not always sure exactly when to expect with the next click. That being said I still love and have no regrets with it as it's very comfortable to wear and the brightness is great

 The 300 had a yellow "spot" in the light that I could not get past. This model has a brighter and whiter light. The buttons can be a bit finicky at times. Also, after little use, the battery meter shows the headlamp is nearly dead
