The Bodum French press is one of the best $20 purchases I’ve made in a while thanks to this sub. Also helped me find great roasters (shoutout Rhetoric Coffee)

I'm still young, and I started learning how to make a quality cup of coffee about 2 years ago. I learn new things all the time. I learn a lot from this subreddit. I come here when I have a singular question. I just Google the question / reddit, and you guys always have an answer. It's amazing how humble and intelligent this community shows itself to be.

My budget setup currently: Baratza Encore grinder, Coffee Envy gooseneck kettle, home filtered water, Happy Mug coffee beans, a Bodum French Press, and a Ninja drip maker for convenience.

Sweeteners I trust are sugar in the raw and sweetened condensed milk.

 Overall, it is a disappointment and I have gone back to using my glass Bodum French press.

 While the plunger mechanism used in the glass version is metal and only has a plastic fastener, almost all of the plunger mechanism for the steel version is plastic.  The silicone ring around the plunger traps coffee grinds in the plunger better than the steel version used in the glass container. However, what often happens is that liquid is also trapped behind the plunger. I normally use 1 2/3 cups of water for in the glass version and this results in a little more than one coffee cup of coffee

 The second was to move away from the plastic in the glass container. While the Bodum Columbia Insulated French Press Coffee Maker Pot excels at the first, it fails at the second. More plastic parts in contact with the hot water than the glass version and yields weaker coffee due to the silicone gasket

 You're gonna do one bottom scoop for every four ounces of water. Once your water has boiled, you simply remove it from the heating source and allow it to sit for about 20 seconds. The perfect temperature of water is 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit which is just below boiling point. You pour your hot water over the grinds, you stir with a wooden or plastic spoon, place your lid on, and you brew for about three to four minutes

 It comes in a variety of sizes as you see for anyone's needs. French Press is also an environmentally safe way to brew coffee. There's very minimal waste created from brewing in a French press since no paper filters or plastic cups are required. Just taste, no waste

Bodum is the worst company for anything coffee related, used to be premium back in the day, now its all plastic garbage, no support, the bistro grinder is the worst purchase I have ever made.

We tried contacting Bodum over a dozen times to troubleshoot or get a refund, and they've been ignoring us. Is Bodum known for poor customer service, or is this a recent development? Has anyone had luck resolving issues with Bodum products through their customer service department?

Issues at Bodum?

 They were pleased with it. At the time, the thermal properties were less important than having it be unbreakable for marine use.  My year old Bosch drip machine is flimsy, makes so-so coffee, and takes up a lot of space on the counter. Setting it up and cleaning it after use takes as much time as using a French press

 If you use a blade grinder, achieving a uniform coarse grind is more difficult and is somewhat of an art; these grinders are better for producing a fine drip grind. I use a an electric Bodum Ibis kettle which boils water in a few minutes.  Preparation is the same as for any French press device: pour hot water over coarsely ground coffee, stir with non-metallic utensil, cover, wait five minutes, press grounds to bottom and pour out the coffee.  If you want a French press device that can keep your coffee hot for hours, buy this product and pour the coffee into a double wall thermos as soon as the coffee is ready

 Because the top is of lower quality than the body of the press, I gave it only four stars. All parts are dishwasher safe.  Like all French press devices, the coffee uses should be of a coarse grind. Using fine drip ground coffee will result in clogging of the filter, or the filter will not sequester all of the grounds below the coffee when you press the ground to the bottom

  Preparation is the same as for any French press device: pour hot water over coarsely ground coffee, stir with non-metallic utensil, cover, wait five minutes, press grounds to bottom and pour out the coffee. Pro's: beautiful, unbreakable design; makes delicious coffee; when filled to capacity, can make four big mugs or 5-6 small cups of coffee for a small crowd; all parts dishwasher safe; uses far less counter space than a drip machine

I use a stainless steel Frieling theses days because it keeps coffee warmer longer, but it's definitely a bit frivolous.

<p>EDIT: A lot of comments in favour of Bodum, and finding that it&#39;s available on my local Amazon, I decided to pull the trigger on a 1L glass one in a pretty classic design. Thanks for all the warnings about glass breakage, I&#39;ll take my chances but be careful. At least I have somewhere to check back to if I want to go stainless steel in the future.</p>

Choosing a French Press

I must confess to being a bit of a coffee snob, and yet despite this, I've always been a bit wary of buying a french press. This was for two reasons: First, it seemed a bit technologically advanced for me. And second, I'm a 'brew a pot of coffee and drink it over several hours' kind of chap, and as there is no heating element to keep this warm once coffee is brewed into a french press, you've got to drink it now.  So let's cover concern one: I'm embarrassed at how easy it is to use this

 My coffee maker is now in a box in the basement. And this stunning until remains on the counter. If you love coffee, you will not be disappointed with this.

 Pour and enjoy. Don't be scared; trust me on this one.  Concern two is why I really love this Bodum. Like the coffee pot in my office at the university, there is no heating element on this; it's simply an insulated container

  A tip I learned on here; once you are done pouring the coffee, twist the top so that the slots that allow the pour are to the side; I've found this helps keep the coffee hotter longer.  If you had my two concerns, I highly recommend this French Press. My coffee maker is now in a box in the basement. And this stunning until remains on the counter

 At the end of the day coffee is water and coffee. Getting good quality water and beans and prepping it fresh will make a huge difference regardless of method.

Any suggestions for a coffee maker would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Coffee beginner here -

  PROS ∙ Very durable ∙ Filters out all grounds -- The permanent steel mesh filter has soft plastic or silicone around the edge that keeps grounds out much better than the presses that have the replaceable steel filters without that plastic edge ∙ Keeps coffee hot for 1 hr., warm 2 hrs. (hot for 2-3 hrs. with the lid insulating trick described above) ∙ Dishwasher safe  CONS ∙ Lid not insulated so heat escapes up through the top

 The outside of the pot gets pretty warm after awhile, but it will keep the coffee hot 2-3 hours if I cover the lid to prevent so much heat from escaping. My solution to the lid issue was to buy a heat-resistant piece of silicone like a pot holder or trivet mat or coaster, trim it down to the right size, and cut a hole in the middle for the plunger. I got some like this:BOBILIFE-Sunflower Silicone Trivets - Multi-purpose Silicone Pot Holders, Spoon Rest and Kitchen Table Mat - Insulated, Flexible, Durable, Non Slip Hot Pads and Coasters ( Pack of 2 Pieces) (Green) . I really wish the lid was insulated, but whenever I've looked at reviews for the presses that do have insulated lids it looks like a lot of people have problems with the vacuum seal on the lid coming apart and getting liquid inside

I've had this press in the 34 oz. size since 2013 and use it daily. None of the parts have broken, the coffee tastes great, and the filter keeps all of the grounds out.
