Boss MD200 Modulation Pedal (60 second review)

 There are just too many changeable elements on this pedal that I just got bamboozled. All the online demo guys make it seem so simple and effortless but this stuff is second nature to them. The sounds are great as you would expect from boss but you can find yourself lost in endlessly turning dials from 0-999. Great pedal and a really compact size but if you’re anything like me and put off by parameter dials and presets and press and hold combos then I’d go for something a lot simpler

Nice enough… complex though.

 So some of these have got like the slice as well. They've got like overdrive with it. That's a really cool thing to have so you can save that as one of your presets and just recall that if you need that kind of tone. Awesome

 It's got your 12 different effects in there, it's got your parameters on the top, it's got a rate and depth and a level all over. It's also got your manual setting, it's got your tap tempo if you hold it down there. You've got four memory presets including the manual ones so you kind of got five. You've got your tap division here as well, with all the notes how they are going on

). I have never liked the Nova Modulator because of the switches, very annoying when choosing a preset. When Boss released the MD-500 I thought it was too big for my pedalboard. The MD-200 on the other hand is very easy to use, perfect size for my pedalboard, the CE-1 sound is so pure, flanger is fantastic, as the other sounds

The preset switch is so easy to work with, I am very happy with it. All the parameters are adjustable with simple knobs that are very sturdy, but this is expected from a pedal that costs more than the GT-1

Complements my pedalboard perfectly, only a possible remark

 Here is the first. Again, you've got rate and depth control, as well as effect level here, and these different parameter knobs. Beautiful chorus. And then we've got the C1 chorus, which is the first Roland chorus

 That is a very good sound. Let me move forward now into auto wah. Now you could configure the expression pedal to control that wah, the sweep, so you can control the MD-200 like a wah-wah pedal. At the moment it's configured to do the rate, so you could also use this foot switch to tap tempo it in, but now that I've got the expression pedal plugged in, it's freed that up for the four memory slots, which we'll have a look at as well

 There's a clean tone. I've got an expression pedal hooked up here so I can control the rate of most of these algorithms. That is a very good sound. Let me move forward now into auto wah

Boss: MD-200 Modulation

Sounds great, but the 3 character LED makes it somewhat harder to use than you might want. If you’ve got room on your board, get the MD-500.

 As for the positives, it has more options each with more tweakability that I know what to do with, and I can save 4 to memories that I can recall via footswitch, and a further 123 that would need some hand to dial twiddling to access, plus a 5th on the footswitch that is whatever is manually set on the dials. But you know that. What it give me is plenty of options to play, experiment, be inspired by, and when I find a good sound, I can save it away for future use. This helps me in my songwriting and playing - there is nothing like an inspiring sound to get the creative juices flowing

The box marked "modulation" is firmly ticked off, and I have a lot of useful options for little real estate on my pedalboard
