Basically the same thing over the same backing track and then we'll use the example from our second idea which was using the 40th anniversary SD-1 as a boost in front of something already crunchy. Let's check that out and then we'll come back and we'll try these out in front of that really kind of grungy disgusting recto tone

Pretty easy to overlook this as a sweet sounding overdrive because it doesn't really have a boutique price tag

I'm bored at work and I love a good ole fashioned circlejerky discussion thread in traditional askreddit stlye. Overrated/Underrated threads always seem to generate some schorching hot takes so I thought I'd start one.

Overrated: Earthquaker Afterneath. What can I say, I just don't find the reverb tone on this one very usable. I'm usually a big fan of ambient style reverbs and just recently bought an Astral Destiny, but the Afterneath just doesn't seem very versatile in comparison. The trails on the end of the reverb also sound a bit harsh to my ears, definitely not as lush as the more modern ambient verbs. This also may just be an issue of it being one of the first of it's kind; it was probably groundbreaking when it came out but now that there's so many similar pedals it just gets lost in the mix.

Underrated: Boss Acoustic Simulator. Yeah, it doesn't really give you an authentic acoustic guitar tone, but that shouldn't matter imo. Kind of like the Univibe, it doesn't matter if it fails at it's intended goal as long as it succeeds in other areas. And this pedal justs works super well in ambient styles of music. I love using it to help cut through the huge wash of sound and still maintain clarity in a drone setting. It's also super fun to pair with distortion for some really over-the-top noise music.

What pedals do you hate that everyone else seems to like, and what pedals do you love that everyone else thinks are unremarkable?

 Solid construction, reliable design that will last for years and years - but to me this pedal just doesn't sound good. The whole sweep of drive feels too weak for my taste, and when you stack it with your amp's overdrive it makes everything sound too twangy - and that's the part I can't get over.  There's no in between in the tone adjustment on this pedal. Your tone will either sound dead or way too accentuated in the wrong parts of the mids

 Definitely do your research on the sound of this thing first before you dive in, it's a matter of taste.

If you want to get yourself one at the minute, it's between 50 pound and 60 pound, which is a lot cheaper than something like a tube screamer or other overdrive pedals that are as iconic from back in the day as on now, like these whole unchanged ones. Like you can't really change your tube screamer and you can't really change your boss SD one. They've kept it as it is, and it's not a lot of money

 The custom mode has been said to be a bit more friendly on single coils, but I've never had any bother with this. If you've got the money and you prefer that one, a bit more refined, totally rocket, but I'm happy with my boss SD one. It takes all the boxes for me and it's never let me down in all of the years that I've had it. Let me know what you think of the boss SD one in the comments down below

5 Reasons You NEED A Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive! - This Little Yellow Pedal Is Iconic, & Here's Why!

The range of distortion is *amazing*. It’s the distortion sound I’ve been hearing in my head for so long, and now I have it. It also pairs great with my other pedals - running the SD-1 into the RAT or running the RAT into the pumpkin pi sounds amazing, perfect for solo boosts and walls of sound. BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive Pedal Demo - Sweetwater Sound

Hey everyone 

I use a TS808 Tube Screamer to boost my JCM 800 studio and I like the sound but I’m tryna explore some new options. I just want that huge saturated 80’s hard rock and metal distortion 

The TS808 sounds great but it might take a little out of the bass end, which isn’t great for these JCM’s which are already kinda treble heavy 

I’m thinking about trying out a Klon clone like the Rocket Archer 

You guys have any insight or experience?
