The Burton Skeleton Key is a directional freeride board that feels at home in the deep powder. With a rocker on the wide nose and a camber throughout the rest of the board it has the response for tight carves and the float in the powder.

2023 Burton Skeleton Key Review

Sushi vs Skeleton Key as a pow/trees/fun second board?

Ready to rock the whole mountain

 It's a bit of a departure from what we've seen before from Burton, but we're definitely digging the look of this season's model. If you're the kind of rider who wants to capitalize on first lifts on powder days, well, this one is a total no brainer. But equally, if you want to avoid the hassle of keeping another setup on standby for when it hasn't snowed in weeks, the Skeleton Key makes one of the best daily drivers for a freeride focused all mountain charger.  And the one big advantage to this, well, it might even leave you with enough money in the bank to add another park specific deck to your quiver. Make no mistake, the Skeleton Key is definitely a freeride focused snowboard, stacked full of directional specific features. But where many boards of the shape and construction can often fall short back on the piste, our test team were super impressed at just how well it held up over the resort. One last shout out goes to Nicholas Law, who did the artwork for the top sheet and base of this year's Skeleton Key

 But thanks to Burton's channel system, there's pretty much an infinite number of stance widths and angles for you to dial in. So if you would prefer to ride this thing a little bit more centered to the board's running length, rather than its side cut, then that is super easy to adjust. In terms of its flex, the skeleton key is actually pretty easy going, and that makes it really accessible for a huge variety of rider abilities and styles. There are certainly far stiffer cores out there, but by keeping the board free from carbon additives, it's much more inviting if you want to get into a little bit more freestyle

 But equally, if you want to avoid the hassle of keeping another setup on standby for when it hasn't snowed in weeks, the Skeleton Key makes one of the best daily drivers for a freeride focused all mountain charger. Burton Skeleton Key 2022 Snowboard Review

I appreciate all of your help so far. I have been reading almost nonstop for 2 days on boards to pick one before the 50% off sale for healthcare workers ends tomorrow.

The general response from this group was to get a custom camber because I am beginner-intermediate and on the east coast. I am basically trying to get better at getting across more difficult terrain and steepness, and I’d like to be able to ride switch one day.

The problem is, all of the custom cambers are sold out or excluded from the sale which I can’t afford.

My remaining choices are all directional camber boards. Oh, and I’m on the east coast where snow is hard and sometimes icy (I have the sprained wrist to prove it)

Some options that are in stock are the cartographer camber, free thinker camber, and the skeleton key camber.

How do boards like these perform on hard snow? And can an intermediate rider handle them? I love snowboarding but I can only afford to buy things on sale and I want a board I can keep for a long time.

I also have no interest in rails and parks. I love to cruise and I could see myself doing some small jumps when I get better.

I’m 145 pounds and I have been using an off brand matrix hand me down board with used flow bindings.

Any advice on choosing a board, and do any of the 3 above match what I need?

Choosing a Burton board on sale pt 2

 It does great in deep snow with the big nose and riding kind of close to the tail just naturally pops that nose up and you get some deep snow with it. So it really can do it all. It's designed for the intermediate to advanced freerider, person who likes to just ride really hard, really fast, lay big turns, somebody who likes to ride all types of terrain, probably doesn't spend a whole lot of time in the park. So I would not recommend this board for the beginner rider

 My name is Andrew Wood. I am testing the 2021 Burton Skeleton Key with the Burton Step-Ons. This is actually the board that I ride most of the time. So what I really love about this board is your ability to just charge really fast in any terrain

 It's designed for the intermediate to advanced freerider, person who likes to just ride really hard, really fast, lay big turns, somebody who likes to ride all types of terrain, probably doesn't spend a whole lot of time in the park. So I would not recommend this board for the beginner rider. This is a directional camber board that typically would be harder for somebody who's just starting out snowboarding to learn on. So I've been riding the Skeleton Key for three years now

Line 'em up on the living room carpet or prop them against the closet door in your dorm and take the blurriest goddamn cell phone picture you can, then post it here where nobody cares.  Or maybe somebody does care, and you can talk about which Banana is best.  Honestly though, if you have a rad quiver and you want to show it off, or maybe you just bought your first full set-up, or you're stoked on a new pair of goggles or whatever, post 'em here. Upvotes for everyone!!!

 It's a mellower flex, but it's not super mellow. From tip to tail, you can see it gives a little bit. But in the center, it's really stiff. In the nose, it's got a little give

 But I had so much fun initiating the turn and even more fun once I got the side cut engaged and I started to widen out the turning radius a little bit. It really has just this amazing turning experience kind of like the Showstopper and the Flight Attendant and a lot of Burton boards. Even in that realm of the Custom X, even though that's like the Showstopper and the Custom X or something different. But it just has that Burton turning magic that they're one of the only companies I've experienced this feel with where it's just so dynamic and fun, just really going out in all kinds of carves

 Then it lets go a little easy. The Let's Talk Flex. It's a mellower flex, but it's not super mellow. From tip to tail, you can see it gives a little bit

 But this did pretty good with that too. And it's fun with an across the groomer carve and not bad on a circle carve either. Not amazing, but very doable. And I just love the turning and carving experience of this board

Powder Board Reccos

 So don't be discouraged to ride this board backwards because you absolutely can ride it switch. This part is never going to dig into the snow as it does rise like a normal tail would. This is a mid flexing snowboard that's going to be a slightly softer flex than the Burton Deep Thinker or Freethinker. And it's a great choice for a first timer all the way up to an advanced rider

 Kind of anybody can ride this board and love it all the same. This is going to be a directional cambered snowboard which means there is camber from the tail all the way past the front foot of the board which then releases in a rocker nose which allows you to get that good float and powder that you need while also having that good stable camber under your feet. With this being a directional board it also has directional flex which means the tail is going to be slightly stiffer than the nose giving you that snap you need in the tail while giving you that mobility you want in your nose. Being one of Burton's directional boards the Skeleton Key is going to be made with bounce free ride geometry which means the side cut is centered on the stance and the nose rises past the contact points

 This is a mid flexing snowboard that's going to be a slightly softer flex than the Burton Deep Thinker or Freethinker. And it's a great choice for a first timer all the way up to an advanced rider. Kind of anybody can ride this board and love it all the same.
