 We also got right here the Cali 76 compacted base a bass optimized version of the same pedal And I've got the slide rig here. Which is a slightly different pedal variation on the theme All these pedals are sort of a variation on the classic 1176 style compression circuit the classic studio compressor And that circuits been basically sort of copped and miniaturized down into a pedal form which is amazing because yeah 1176 is traditionally a great big two racks bass unit, so they've really been able to capture a lot of that tone and You know sort of characteristic 1176 sound in these little pedals Which is just super cool? So I wanted to show in that song at the beginning of the video What these pedals sound like on a whole bunch of different instruments? So I was lucky enough to get my friends Blair sent on drums and John button on bass And we use the pedals on everything on drums bass acoustic guitar electric guitar slide guitar and And yeah, I just wanted to show the character of of that sound and how close these pedals get to the real thing so I started off with drums and you heard the Cali 76 compact deluxe on a drum overhead mic and I we started out the tune without it And then I switched it in you heard how much it pushed the drums to the the front of the mix and just made well They were the only thing happening at that point But they just took on way way more of an exciting rock and roll character, and I love that sound on drums so Then what else we do Cali 76 once again same pedal I used on the rhythm electric guitar and it once again it just you know pumps up the guitar makes it sound more like rock and roll and pushes it right to the front of the mix and Then we use the Cali 76 compact bass on the bass guitar You heard John switch it in and out in that little middle sort of bass breakdown part so you could hear how it was really Pumping up the bass evening everything out and making the notes sustain Yeah, everything louder than everything else have you ever seen that t-shirt? You know what kind of reminds me of that that's what 1176 is dude They just make everything rock a little more push everything up pump it up And they do it in a very cool kind of transparent way That you know doesn't strike the listener as an obvious compression. I don't think So yeah, yeah, yeah slide ring also use that on the slide guitar part. This is a slightly different pedal It's like two 1176 is in one pedal, so that's really cool They're like cascaded into one another which is just a terrific terrific sound for slide mix slide playing a breeze really It's a whole lot easier to do And yeah, you can set the amp almost clean or a little bit crunchy and then kick in this pedal It's like you got endless sustain, but without a ton of distortion, so it's just a really really cool sound all right Let's examine the sound of these compressors a little bit more here we go So for the drum sound we had two mics going a kick microphone and then a mono overhead condenser mic And we process that mono overhead through this pedal the way we did that was microphone mic preamp through a radial reamp box out into this pedal back out of the Cali 76 into the recording interface And then we recorded that sound live right into Pro Tools as Blair was playing so you saw two bars go by with no compression And then I switched in the pedal as he was playing and you heard the sound that The compressor and parts on the on the drum sound it just kind of sounds like you know rock and roll all of a sudden It's really magic And it really amazing how much it really has that 1176 character in this little pedal And it just sounds terrific to me, so I used it in I set it up in much Similar fashion as you would like a typical 1176 on an overhead mic or on room mics which is to say kind of a slow attack time fast release time and Had about a you know kind of a medium ratio going and what I was going for is you know when you set the attack Slow and you use a fast release You get the initial spike of the drum come through because the slow attack lets it go through and then the compressor kicks in right after that and kind of pushes up the drum sound from underneath and you get all that body of the drums and a bit Of the room sound and everything coming in and it just sounds like rock and roll

I feel like i keep getting different pedals that i “love” but then stop using after about a month. As an example, i bought the JHS 3 Series fuzz a couple months ago, and loved it! For the first two weeks that is. It just started to sound... artificial after that. I don’t really know how else to explain it. 

One that I actually *do* love, is the EQD Plumes. It has all of the OD sounds i want, as well as a clean boost. If i turn all of the knobs up on the clean boost setting but turn my amp down a bit, it completely overloads the tubes (I’m guessing) and creats this wonderful fuzzy goodness.
