I am looking for a long distance bike for the city and is comfortable to ride in

I generally recommend the Cannondale Quick if you're looking for a first bike to build distance, as it comes in a 44cm option and is good for easing into road biking. Felt also had a better range of options for shorter people, as their women's line included 650c and 700c wheels depending on the size of the frame and they had good road bikes for kids that didn't look childish. My smaller friends also loved their Fuji road bikes.

I'm tall, morbidly obese, and I'm thinking about getting into bicycling for my physical and mental health-- is this the hobby for me, and what would you suggest?

The Cannondale Quick 4 comes in Large, Extra-Large, and Extra-Extra Large, and it‘s in your price range. This bike is a “1x”, meaning it has only one gear in the front, with 9 speed very wide range gearing in the rear. Very easy to learn shifting with no front gear changer to worry about.

I've had the Unagi E500 for a month - Advice on Upgrading?

Personally the Quick 4 hit that sweet spot for me. You could also look at the Apollo Explore or Emove Cruister too. Of the three I would (and did) pick the Quick 4 as I preferred the better suspension, better build, lower weight, and smaller folded size vs the other two. Depending on what you mean by steep, however, I don't think any of the machines I mentioned can do 20 mph up a hill (unless you are really light).
