 So the SL2 has an APS-C CMOS 24.2 megapixel sensor. Now it's really cool because this is the same sensor or a similar sensor to a lot of the more expensive Canon models, yet they put it in this small body and really budget offering, so then you can get great photos and great video images. It's also got the upgraded Digic 7 processor, which means that it's going to handle low light better than even models with the older processor, as well as operation is very fast

 As you scroll through the menus, everything, the camera fires up fast, you can do everything really fast, so that's super cool. And then one of my favorite features of the SL2 is that they added dual pixel autofocus to the AF system. Now other Canon models had a hybrid autofocus, and Canon's always been pretty good at autofocus, but dual pixel is absolutely incredible. So that means this is a great camera for shooting YouTube videos or for vlogging, to not only be able to see yourself on the screen, but be able to have face tracking and be able to have it follow focus really well for creating videos

 You'll get maybe more dials, eventually they add, you know, like a top view screen, and a lot of things like that, but a lot of those things, in my opinion, are things you can live without. Now, if those are features that you want, then definitely those are all great cameras, but what's cool is that they've managed to pack, like, all the essentials into this camera to make it a very well-rounded content creation tool. Photos, videos, micro-content for social, and so if you did wanna be shooting 4K video, you'd have to look somewhere else, and it also doesn't have, you know, higher frame rates, like 120 frames per second if you wanted to do, say, like, really slow, slow motion, but again, those are features that are usually found in more expensive and higher-end cameras anyways, and so not really as much of the target, or I think even the intent, of the SL2. And then one final thought about the SL2, and one of the reasons why it's one of my top picks for the best cameras for YouTube this year, is because it has all of the essential features, I feel like, that YouTubers need, specifically, right? When you have the flip screen, you got the great face tracking, the autofocus, but it's at such an affordable price that you could maybe, if you have a fixed, you know, budget for investing in gear, that some people, a mistake I see them make is they buy, like, the most expensive camera, and then they have no money left over to think about lighting, to think about microphones, to think about tripods

Camera for beginners

Great camera, but didn't receive a new, unopened camera and packaging was poor.

 However as I say that this brings me to one of the very interesting things here. What they have taken from the bigger brothers from the better cameras on the market in the Canon lineup is that dual pixel hybrid AF and that means I can focus off the back screen beautifully, I can track moving subjects beautifully, I can touch where I want with full coverage and so this is a really, really weird SLR because this is the first SLR on the market where I might actually say I'm going to prefer shooting off the back screen and using that dual pixel layoff rather than bringing it up and using it as well an SLR. Now going even further with that the screen is excellent, it really is, I mean I get full articulation full flip screen that means that this camera can you know I'm used for selfies, for vlogging, we're going to talk about that in just a little bit but it's also a really sharp screen. Same as the 6D Mark II, I mean this screen is clear, it's easy to use and nice and articulated, easy to pull out and so a really well thought out feature to add into a small affordable camera like this, even more reason why I'm probably going to use this more than I'm going to use this

 I love the SL1 because it was so compact and so cute, now we've got the new version and this has a lot of upgrades so I'm eager to play with it, it's the perfect compact lightweight camera to walk around, take some photos of the river today, have a good time with. So of course the big thing you're going to notice on the SL2, very compact camera, it's actually slightly larger than its predecessor though the SL1 and I really love that camera, it had a very small grip and it really did look miniature and that was very interesting. Now this camera does have a bigger grip and frankly I think most people are going to enjoy that. A lot of people found the SL1 too hard to hold, this won't be a problem but yeah lightweight, compact small body, I do really love that but of course that does have some downsides and this is after all a rebel body

It is quick and responsive but you can't track moving subjects, it's not very sophisticated, you know you put that in contrast against cameras like the 77D which are essentially rebel bodies but have 45 point autofocusing systems that are quite capable, this does feel like a real step back. However as I say that this brings me to one of the very interesting things here.  I love the menu design, I love the flip out screen, I love the touch capability, I love the 80D sensor in here, what I don't love is you know the view finder is not amazing, the optical view finder I should say and the 9 point auto focus is just not going to blow anybody away. So all of the kind of stuff that I do like you could mostly find in a camera like the M5 or M6. Now if you look at other SLR's that are competitive to this camera, something like the Pentax K70 or the Nikon D3400 especially would come to mind and honestly the 3400's a tiny camera as well, super portable and light, this doesn't really represent much advantage over that. I think what's really keeping Canon in the fight is the fact that they've put the great sensor in here that they need to which makes it competitive with the competition and also they've got that dual pixel hybrid AF that cannot be underestimated, that is really the big selling feature because what I love about mirrorless for somebody just starting out is they can use an EVF, they can see what they're doing, they can see what their changes do real time to the photograph and that's a great way to learn and all the other cameras are handicapped with fairly slow performance off of the screen

Hobbyist Camera

A very attractive and fun DSLR with two significant shortcomings.

 Lastly the video bit which I put last in order of importance, if it was that important you wouldn't be looking at a Canon right, what, it's not that important to Canon either obviously. But you know what, this is also pretty good for video, I mean it's not going to be great for video enthusiasts, but for vloggers I would finally recommend this purely on the basis of it having dual pixel AF, which is fantastic, it's the best thing since sliced bread, in fact sliced bread doesn't even compare, because that can't focus, like this. But for what it's worth, I think it's a cracking little camera for vlogging, it's got a mic input, and this is perhaps my choice for those on a lower budget. The biggest surprise is that this has dual pixel AF, which is the best, most organic feeling AF around for video, making the video feature pretty damn solid for an entry level, and why I think this is the best all round first DSLR

I need a camera! Under 300$. I am a mom with an 11 month old and want to take great, clear, bright, vivid pics of my son. He moves too quickly, causing blurry pics. I have a newer iPhone (one with 2 camera lenses on the back) and it’s just not cutting it because of how quickly he shifts. I want WiFi on it and a rechargeable battery. Other than that I’m really open. I’m new to photography, but a quick learner, do maybe not something super difficult to learn or operate, but it doesn’t have to be for complete newbies either.

Mama needs a camera!

 Any new camera user, generally speaking or just someone upgrading, needs to have a guide for the features. And the fact that I had to buy a battery charger because one didn’t come with the camera..

 It has a three-inch fully articulating touchscreen LCD and can shoot video at up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. Now, a big feature of this camera that I really love for video, especially at this price point, is that it has an external mic input, and that lets you actually use a better microphone than the one that comes with this camera. The SL2 has Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth, so you can connect it to the Canon Camera Connect app, and then easily move images between the camera and a mobile device.
