I would say look into a Canon 40D or 50D if you want tough cameras, or maybe Rebel T2i's or Rebel SL1's. Get a bunch of cheapo 18-55's to go with them. Make room for spare bodies and lenses in case you need to switch them out. I have IT colleagues in K-12, and the things these kids do to school-provided electronics is fucking ridiculous.

The auto-focus often times will take so long to find the car, that I've missed the shot I wanted to capture and I've had to become good at pre-focusing on something else and praying it doesn't try to focus all the way in and out before finding the car again. Low light is just non-existent with this setup. I shoot at 1/80 or 1/100 almost exclusively to get the proper motion in the shot, and this setup only goes to ISO 1600, which is extremely grainy and still doesn't capture what I need.
