Not quite what I expected.

Requires many additional accessories

 For a five inch scope, It is heavy enough but not designed well at all. The hand control doesn't fit well into it's recessed holder. I am constantly fighting with that issue and decided to stick Velcro around the mount base and to the back of the controller. I can deal with hanging it on Velcro much better

 Goto is spot on too. Sadly, that mount is an aluminum piece of light weight junk. But, I use it more because the Celestron mount is so frustrating that it isn't worth the trouble to me. Both Orion and Celestron need to get with the game and build a suitable alt/az mount instead of frustrating junk

 But the scope held collimation for nearly four years so that is admirable in itself. The mount is where the bad part is and why I knocked it down two stars. For a five inch scope, It is heavy enough but not designed well at all. The hand control doesn't fit well into it's recessed holder

Four year review of Celestron 5SE

  This telescope, on first set-up, the plastic parts of the leg top leg mounts on the tripod broke easily, or were already broken. Then the auto-align system wouldn’t work, apparently because something in the plastic tracking gear drive for the alignment motor was either; cracked, or had broken teeth??? Anyway, the alignment motor would not work consistently, and was very noisy.  I really, really wanted to like this telescope as a starting telescope for my daughters, but for a little more money (relatively) you can get an all-metal Celestron telescope & powered equatorial mount and tracking system.  Also, I wanted to show my daughters how to do basic Astrophotography

 For someone using equatorial mounts, this 'promise' of a wedge, to correct for the field rotation, is kind of a DISAPPOINTMENT.  3) The seller is DIFFERENT from Celestron. As a result, price-match may not be there. The very next day after I received the package (outer damage) there was a $60 reduction in price

Powerful and Affordable

 After the new finderscope arrived, it quickly became clear that I needed a special bracket so that it would fit the telescope. So, of course, more money spent ($15).  The new finderscope made it easier to find the stars and was a lot easier to align, but it didn't eliminate all of the alignment problems. The next issue was getting the star (or planet) aligned in the eyepiece

Expect to spend more money

This is a great telescope for those who are getting into amateur astronomy. First of all, the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope design offers great focal length at a compact size and are generally cheaper than refractors. Portability was one of my biggest purchasing points. Celestron's reputation was another buying point for me, in addition to other reviews about this particular telescope

For those who are considering buying the Celestron NexStar 5SE and are just getting into this hobby, I strongly recommend that you read the manual prior to using it, for you are investing a decent chunk of money on this telescope, and it deserves to be taken care of and used as intended

Excellent telescope for the beginning amateur astronomer

For the Entry Level Observers 4SE

I already wish I could have afforded to go bigger. But of course budget is always a consideration. I don't know how much better viewing would be with one of the larger ones, but I would like to upgrade already (although, it might be more difficult to travel.) The planets are still VERY small, or maybe I am just not using the right lenses

 This spring he learned a lot about space in school and had a renewed interest in the telescope so I drug it out and again, couldn't really see much. So I took a chance and ordered this one hoping we would have more success. Please note, for the this review, I won't be technical, because I we really are newbie's! We took the advice of other reviewers and used the 2 star align method. With this you must know at least two stars, but if you don't that's ok
