Despite the various technological advancements of density scanning that many wall scanners use, there is nothing more reliable than a magnet finding a screw holding the sheetrock to the stud. That's why the C.H. Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder is great. Magnets don't get false readings, nor do they have a hard time differentiating between different materials; either it is steel, or it isn't. Magnets work great with sheetrock, and they work even better with plaster and lathe walls, as many older buildings have. The C.H. Hanson model also comes with a level, which allows you to ensure its point on the bottom is facing plumb straight down. 
What this product has in reliability, it lacks in any sort of additional capabilities. The C.H. Hanson will only find the screws in the studs, not the stud itself, so we were never sure if we were drilling into the center of the stud or not. Sheetrock screws are usually 12-16 inches apart, so it can take a bit of noodling around to find two screws to ensure the line of a stud. Still, for ease of use and no false positives, the C.H.  As I said in the past. Um, it comes with special magnet. Uh, the magnet is pretty powerful, you know, and it's as small as you see, it fits on your palm of your hand and uh, you could just throw it in your toolbox and it will be. It's a great tool to have for finding studs

 Still, it's not very good. I've found myself recently turning to the old "knock and listen for a hollow sound" technique rather than trying to dig this stud finder out.

 Whatever the case, it is *very* hard for me to find studs with this stud finder. I have gotten it to stick to the wall exactly twice in the installation of multiple picture frames and furniture anchors. All the other times, I've had to "feel" for the pull of the magnet--which is actually very hard to do reliably because the stud finder itself is rather heavy. Be aware that a good portion of the magnet "hits" this stud finder will produce for you will likely be pretty weak, and you might not even feel them if you aren't that sensitive to weak forces

 Like I said, it's pretty heavy. It's not so heavy that it's difficult to use for whatever reason, but the weight does make it less likely the unit will stick to the wall when it finds a nail or screw. It would be way easier to confirm positive hits of the unit were lighter weight.  The included bubble level is nice, but I'm not sure I understand the point of it, since this stud finder can't be used for measurement and offers no flat sides you can use to draw a line

  Also, because this stud finder absolutely relies on metal objects in the stud, you might miss studs pretty easily if you can't get this close enough to a nail or screw (or if, as I said before, you can't feel the force when you do get it close to a nail or screw).  The other annoying thing to me is the weight. Like I said, it's pretty heavy. It's not so heavy that it's difficult to use for whatever reason, but the weight does make it less likely the unit will stick to the wall when it finds a nail or screw

I don't find it all that useful...

 (Avoid corners with windows or doors nearby, or corners of the house, as this may cause design layout to vary.) Measure either 16 or 24" (most common), and that will be your base measurement to expect in the rest of your house. Also note that exterior walls may have different / closer stud placement and distance than interior walls.  Remember: Building code changes with time or materials used or location of wall

 This way you don't make mistakes. - Cut once and measure twice. That way you'll know how badly off you were and then finally get a rough idea of how you need to guess better next time.

  Over all, does it work? Yes, exactly as advertised and as a perfect backup if you don't want to require batteries. Would I get it for a job site? Absolutely not. Its small size and therefore small footprint makes it too cumbersome to try to use for more then figuring out where to mount something at home. For the home user that May only occasionly have to figure out where the studs are, it is perfect because it can also double as a refrigerator magnet due to its smaller size

)  ---  Worth the price vs. a free neodymium magnet from a broken HD? Not really if you've got the HD. But if you don't and like having a level, it's a solid buy for the price and intended use - finding wood studs.

Brilliant...with a few caveats

 If it is near any metal, or nails/screws it will be stuck to it like mud on a pig.  I would like to give it a 5/5 because it is cool, but lets face it: You will want to use this in conjunction with an electronic stud finder, as well as have to store it in a special spot in your tool box/bag. So it wont be the one and only stud finder you'll ever need, where as the franklin sensors 710 (in video) very well could be. Still, for under $10 you really can't go wrong with one of these!
