Cherry MX Red switch review

I’m still super excited to get mine. I never expected this board to take down the Sat75 or anything but I think it’s going to be the best board at the price point. If people can get the IDBAO and DROP boards to sound good, we can def get this one sounding great.

I pre-ordered, and I'm still happy with the results so far. The Pro still checks off all the boxes for what I actually need. While I could budget a higher priced build, that's simply not how I want to spend my money. I knew the specs when I ordered and it's still the right fit for my needs. Sorry the community has been so toxic, guess that's the peril of trying to address some of the needs of a very specialized hobbyist group. 


If it makes you feel any better, every company that tries to fill this relative price point niche in a specialized hobby like this has to deal with this bullshit. Wish I could say it was just a recent development, but in the audio community for instance there's been shit-slinging going back to at least the 50s. Dynaco sold tube amps and kits that were so popular with the people who just wanted a good amp that was attainable as a competent entryway to hifi that they got compared by critics against amps three times the price in a negative way. Lather, rinse, repeat. 


Take care of your people, deliver your product, and word-of-mouth from actual users will hopefully overtake doomsayers already operating at 2x+ the price point.

Hello! I'm coming from those pre-built anyone can buy mechanical keyboards. Currently have a Corsair mechanical keyboard with MX Cherry Red switches, not hot swappable, don't even know if it's lubed, and have had it for about three years.

I saw the GMMK Pro and thought it would be a good way to have the customizability of being able to try different switches, keycaps, etc. What can I expect in terms of customizing the keyboard? I know you can swap switches, keycaps, and stabilizers, but how easy is it to be able to let's say make a more silent keyboard, better feel on the downstroke, and just an overall better typing/gaming experience while sticking with a mechanical keyboard?

Lubed or un-lubed switches? What about padding? Who knows, maybe I need to read up on the basics of a mechanical keyboard at this point, haha. While the keyboard I have now is great, I feel like something is missing, but didn't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on something that may or may not work for me. As we're approaching the GMMK Pro first batch release and with all the moving parts this week just wanted to pop in, here again, to give an official update and also answer any questions.  

#**Batch 1 Release**

Yesterday we put out a [blog post](https://www.pcgamingrace.com/blogs/news/gmmk-pro-reservation-order-completion-information) and emails with the batch 1 release date and lots of info for reservation holders.
 
&gt; **TLDR**: Batch 1 GMMK Pros and accessories will be in our warehouses ready to go on 3/23.  All Batch 1 reservation holders will get an email at 11 am CST that day with a link to a page where they can choose accessories and complete their purchase.  Definitely encourage you to read through the whole post for specific details.

COVID has continued to cause shipping and supply chain delays globally, so it’s definitely been a huge undertaking getting these in for Q1. We hope to start shipping the first waves from Flex batches not too long after Batch 1, and doing our best to get them all fulfilled asap. In the meantime, we’ll continue to offer reservations until we are caught up with stock. Once we’re caught up it will be put on regular sale.


#**Sound Test**

Yesterday we also uploaded a sound test on Youtube - which obviously sparked some discussion.

The intention of these 2 sound tests was simply to show off a fairly standard configuration of the board. This was our first official recorded sound test - we used a high-quality microphone ([Rode NTG 3](http://www.rode.com/microphones/ntg-3) if anyone is wondering), and consulted multiple experts within the community for getting the setup right.  

The audio is unmanipulated, but we boosted the volume levels by several decibels since the original sounded very quiet. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM0pPYy31YY&amp;t=1s) is the original version with the unboosted volume - which may be closer to what you’re used to hearing in other sound tests.

As Alex reiterated last night, sound tests are all very subjective. We’ll be posting many different sound tests over the coming weeks from different people with different configurations. There's also going to be a bunch of reviewers posting full reviews with tests in them on March 23rd.

Definitely recommend listening to multiple sound tests to form an opinion. Hearing it in person is obviously always going to differ from what you hear through a microphone/speakers. This board is designed to be tinkered and tweaked, and it can really be made to sound however you want it to sound.

#**GOAT Stabs** 

Getting lots of questions/comments (and some concerns) on the stabs. FYI, GOAT stabs come pre-lubed and pre-clipped in the board. We know many of you are used to group buys that don’t come with Stabs. We included them pre-installed in the board because it's convenient for many of the people who will be buying it.

These stabs are fine for 99% of people who will be buying the PRO out of the box. But again, the OGs in this community with more discerning acoustic tastes will probably want to modify them to your own preferences. They’re factory lubed with G-Lube out of the box, but we found re-lubing them with a thicker grease can improve the sound quality (we’re experimenting with implementing this at the factory for future batches)

If you don’t love them - they're screw-in so you can easily replace them with your preferred stabs. 

If you don’t know Glorious, we are very dedicated to continuous improvements. We’re constantly updating products as we get new feedback. So if you don’t think they’re really the GOAT now, we’ll make sure they are going forward. We appreciate your feedback so we can continue to improve what we put out.

#**Guiding Purpose**

Reiterating the purpose and our goal with the GMMK Pro. We’re releasing the GMMK Pro in this manner because we genuinely want to help make custom keyboards more accessible. 

We aren’t looking to replace your $2000 build. We aren’t looking to steamroll the Group Buy market. 

Most people who are not deep in the enthusiast keyboard community do not have access to high-quality, customizable boards. Either they don’t know how to get them, miss the group buys, can’t afford them, or are generally just intimidated by the scene.  It is a huge jump for people to go from the $50 Pre-Built RGB boards to a $600-$800 Group Buy they need to invest dozens of hours of tinkering into. The GMMK Pro will be a bridge for them into this hobby.

For most people who have reserved this board who are coming from a standard mechanical or gaming keyboard, we know it's going to blow any keyboard they’ve ever owned out of the water.

For you who are already seasoned vets and pro modders, we obviously can’t tell you it's going to be the best board you’ve ever bought. But we genuinely think you’re going to be really happy with it. Like any custom, you’re going to want to tinker and tweak it until it’s perfect for you.

Overall the feedback we’ve received from both enthusiasts and non has been extremely positive.  And like we said, this is not a one-time group buy so we will continue to improve the board based on your feedback. 

#**Keeping Positive Vibes**

A last note...something important to me I’ve been wanting to put out there. As many of our team are keyboard enthusiasts ourselves, 99% of my own experiences with the community have been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. That's a big reason why I fell in love with the hobby in the first place.  But last night we, unfortunately, had to turn off comments on our Youtube video due to some pretty extreme levels of toxic trolling, which escalated to hate speech and threats directed towards our staff. We also had to ban over 100 people from Twitch chat during our stream for the same reason.  This isn’t our first rodeo and we all have thick skin for criticism, but this isn’t something we’re going to let fly on our channels. 

I am not implying those people came from this sub, but toxicity is, unfortunately, a pretty frequent topic of discussion for many people within this community (including amongst some of the most well-respected members) with similar concerns. 

We’re a small company, and everybody on our team is passionate about hardware. You’re not going to hurt our feelings posting that you don’t like our products - we always welcome open feedback, constructive criticism, and even well-meaning shit-talking; but there’s a line between criticism and unnecessarily hostile levels of negativity.

Like said above, we want to help introduce many people to the world of high-end custom boards. Those people are in these threads, in the Twitch comment sections, Youtube comment sections, in Discord. They’re looking to the experienced veterans in the hobby for actual guidance and feedback. We really hope they’ll feel welcomed and excited to explore this hobby (not dodging gatekeeping).

Obviously, you dislike what we’re putting out - you don’t need our permission to voice your opinion wherever/however you want. Our DMs, Discord, Twitter, Reddit, support chat are always open too. Worked as expected

 Companies usually have to pour either on the left side or in the middle, sometimes on the right side, but not just 10 millimeters off. The center keycaps here are a nice lightly textured double shot Pbt set. This is great for avoiding any fingerprints and smudges and stuff like that. We still do have that regular Corsair font, which is still kind of a bummer, although they do include this cool looking radiant space bar with all these triangles and that too is textured to the touch like you can feel the actual design

 Having an extra 7 taxing rate on your Cpu really just is not worth it at all. And in their Iq software, it is set to 1000 hertz by default. So you do have to go in and change it to Ak and it will alert you like hey, Pc might take a hit because of this. But while we're here real quick, let's just talk Iq because it did seem to get a facelift

 that's why I went with the red one. Now the next one is the blue and green cherry Mx switches. These are clicky ones. See, you can hear the clicky sound

 Of course on the black one, I can press it and halfway it turns on and then it bottoms out. You can't see this on the video, but it does feel like I have to put a little bit more pressure on it, which is something I don't like because I don't want to fatigue my fingers too much when I'm typing. I want it as light as possible while still functioning. so that's why I like the red one more than the black

 Again, this is a little bit too heavy, but maybe for people with really fat fingers or a heavy hand they would want it to be heavier so that they don't accidentally activate a switch. Typists kind of like this clicky one, but if you're in an office environment, you really don't want this clicky one because every single key you press is going to go click click click. You might annoy some of your coworkers, so you might not want to get a clicky one for a office environment and go with something that doesn't click, just maybe a tactile or even the red. like me, I have a feeling this green one is probably malfunctioning a little bit because it's supposed to activate right after it clicks

 This one is 50 gram activation force. This one is 80 gram. Again, this is a little bit too heavy, but maybe for people with really fat fingers or a heavy hand they would want it to be heavier so that they don't accidentally activate a switch. Typists kind of like this clicky one, but if you're in an office environment, you really don't want this clicky one because every single key you press is going to go click click click

Which Cherry MX Key to use? | BeatTheBush

I own a HyperX Alloy FPS Pro Cherry MX Red and I love it. That's my first mechanical keyboard, and the only mechanical keyboard I have used till now.

Hey guys I'm looking for my first mech. I'm thinking a tkl under $100 (less would be better). I'm not sure if I want RGB, but I think it'd be pretty cool. 

I'm stuck between waiting for the ck530 to be cheaper or saving up a little more for the ducky one 2. I was looking at the GMMK tkl and the Keychron K8 but I dont really like the font on the GMMK and I probably wont use the bluetooth on the Keychron. 

Any thoughts on these keyboards or other tkls I should check out?

Edit - I’m currently debating on 4 boards now

CK530 (~$90) - is cheaper and keycaps look fine/clean

Ducky One 2 ($100 - 125) - pricier but seems like a solid build. Only one with Cherries

Keychron K8 ($80 -100) - seems solid and generally more affordable, but keycaps are eh and I probably wont use it wirelessly. I’ve heard it’s rather high as well

GMMK ($70 w/o switches - $105 w/gateron red, no keycaps from Glorious) - pricier, solid but I would also buy new keycaps because I dont like the keycap font

I will buy a %60 percent keyboard, however only one available in my country is Razer Huntsman Mini with clicks purple switches. I'm a little bit in doubt because I read that click purple switches sounds too loud. I could get an Anne Pro 2 from Newegg but that means that I have to wait too much, probably won't have a guarantee and delivery might get tricky in customs, or I can get Razer in just 2 days. I'm very indecisive. Anyone experience with Huntsman Mini Clicky?

Hi all. I'm new to mechanical keyboards. Someone suggested a Ducky to my wife as a gift to me and she instantly regretted it (too noisy for her).

Well I'm putting together a WFH setup for her and wanted her to get a mechanical keyboard (she loves the feedback but hates the noise). Does anyone have a recommendation similar to Ducky (cheaper the better but would love to keep a standard)

For reference my ducky has cherry blues. I have a bunch of keycaps so I would love if we can interchange the caps (does that mean I have to stick to cherry switches only?)

Ive only owned a Razer Blackwidow Chroma Ultimate, are there 65 or 60 % keyboards with individually addressable leds other than the Huntsman mini?  
My setup really favors the blackwidow/huntsman design of black on addressable led but the razer switches are embarrassingly loud.

I've got a Unicomp Model M (104 Key USB Buckling Spring Keyboard).

I haven't used it in a few weeks, and just went to plug it in, and  keystrokes from the SPACE BAR, and numbers 5, 7, and 8 are not  registering.  When I fiddle with the cable, I can intermittently get the keys to register.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair the unit myself?  Unicomp is offering to fix for $40 + shipping, which is a good deal, but am comfortable fixing it myself if it's an easy one.  Help!

Is there a reliable, safe seller with fast shipping to Canada that would sell one of these boards? (preferably with clear switches, black colour)

Do I need to reprogram the keys and buy an entire new keycap set in Mac Format? How do I do this? Using the keyboards software? One thing I'm missing about my old board is the 2x2 square of function keys on the left side of the board, which I used a lot when playing games. I decided to take the plunge and ordered a sync 75% split keyboard. 

I am having a hell of a time trying to find a keycap set with a split space and 1.75 shift key.

My options seem to be buy some blank enter and shift keys or spend 10 bucks a half on alibaba for 2 halves convex ones. 

Any tips or place I try looking without breaking the bank?

are there significant differences between cherry mx browns and gateron browns? I'm looking to get my first mechanical keyboard (anne pro 2) and I couldn't decide between the two.  my previous keyboard, the g213, had membrane keys that supposedly mimicked brown switches. I liked having the actuation force and want to replicate that. from what I've heard its down to personal preference for what switches are better but with no experience with either I don't know what to expect with either.   I'm mostly using it for gaming if that changes anything.

What are Ducky x Varmilo boards like [this](https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6761)? Does Ducky make the board and Varmilo design the caps? I own a Ducky board and never touched a Varmilo, but at a glance it seems that making Ducky makes higher quality boards/cases, so assuming TKL versus 65% doesn't matter to me, does that mean a Ducky x Varmilo might be a better bet than just a straight Varmilo board?
