This is a rant, but there's an upbeat ending.  


So as a teenager with persistent acne, and dark PIH, my dermatologist prescribed me a benzoyl peroxide ointment AND a salicylic acid ointment AND a glycolic acid ointment. And these were strong.  
What's more, they didn't mention anything about tret, or even ask about the facewash I was using.  
So naturally, as a teenager who had acne, and thought it was due to her oily skin, I put on the BP every night as prescribed, and alternated sal acid and gly acid in the mornings as prescribed- didn't moisturise my face at all, and washed my face with a harsh soap cleanser (aggressively) atleast 3 times a day. I also scrubbed my face, to get rid of the hyperpigmentation faster.  
Obviously I never put on any sunscreen. Needless to say, my skin literally fell off in chunks, which is painful as fuck, but also caused like 1 inch hyperpigmentation spots all over my face which was the worst thing to ever happen to my self esteem during school. I stopped that treatment because I literally couldn't go on. And I felt defeated, like my acne would never get better.

They never asked me to get tested for PCOS (which I realised I had at the age of 16, when a FRIEND asked me to consider getting tested for it.) AND my gynecologist simply put me on birth control when I got diagnosed with it. This made my skin better, but made me feel horrible (morning sickness, headaches, etc. every day). So I couldn't continue that either. And when I stopped taking the pills, the acne, and the hair, and the weigh all came back worse. So I felt defeated again. I was at my literal worst.

At the age of 23 or so, when I was living away from home, I came across Dr. Dray's videos. I don't know how. And I think, the youtube algorithm literally saved my life. I subscribed to her, Cassandra Bankson, and labmuffin beauty because their scientific approach appealed to me. and after about a year's worth of research on youtube, reddit, and other sites (including research papers etc), I learnt enough about the science behind my skin, and developed my own skincare routine from scratch.  


Motivated by this journey, I also took on the challenge of figuring out the diet, exercise, and lifestyle that works best for my body and the PCOS. I realise now that being put on birth control is an absolutely ridiculous way of 'managing' PCOS. And how it only appears to manage visible symptoms, and improves nothing internally- just disguises the upheaval.

I'm angry at how incompetent my healthcare providers were. And how they played around with my physical health and mental health. It's unbelievable.  


But what's also unbelievable, is the amount I've been able to accomplish- with my own intellect, and hard work.   
The biggest difference I've noticed now, is this- breakouts (which I still get every month around my period), and subsequent PIH doesn't get me down anymore- it doesn't make me hide my face. I'm so invested in the journey of self care through skin care- the whole ritual and science of it- that I'm able to love the process of it, instead of focusing on the results,  joke about it, and approach it with almost a researcher's curiosity (evaluating the changes I need to make to my product application to control that month's unique concern).

Which SA face wash/cleanser would you suggest for a first time SA user? Which of these have worked for you?

Only downside is that it has perfume which is horrible for your skin in the long term. Excepted a company like Cipla to do better!

<p>Sunscreens -uv doux is my HG, used reequil blue but loved uv doux only . Episoft sunscreen for winters . </p>

<p>Moisturiser- excela , acrofy , sebamed  gel 
Face wash - saslic. HG of the HG’s 😂 worked well for me on my bumps and controlling acne . On other days I would love to use episoft cleansing gel (green colour not the lotion type one ) .</p>

So someone in this suv recommended the Neutrogena Deep Clean face wash when I wanted something to exfoliate my skin but not purge because I can’t handle that stress mentally. While it’s a good cleanser,keeps new acne from popping up,it makes my skin dry and I noticed this first when I put on foundation. I’ve never had problems w patchy foundation so I’m gonna attribute the face wash as the cause. 

Skin is oily, I guess dehydrated,with blackheads and CCs and some PIH from minimalist products.

My routine is: Deep Clean face wash 
Ponds Light Moisturiser 
Reequil sunscreen 

Currently giving my skin a break from all actives but looking for new actives as well.
