I just purchased an SM7B mic which is considered a great mic for podcasting. 

I connect it to my interface (Focusrite Scarlette 2i2) using an xlr cable. 

Problem is the mic doesn't put out a very loud signal meaning I have to crank the gain up all the way to even hear it very well in my headphone monitors. 

So I decided to buy a pre-amp. I found a simple one for about 75 on Amazon. 

Plugged the mic into one end and the interface into the other

It gets a lot louder now without having to crank the gain. But the new problem is that now I'm getting static in my headphone and the recording

I thought maybe it was an electric issue so I unplugged all my nearby power cables. Still static. Not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Static on my new SM7B

I had heard differing opinions on whether this could help lower noise, so I decided to do my own (amateur) test on this.  I recorded a quick voice sample on my phone, and played it back at the outer reaches of what the Shure would pick up, at the distance when background noise starts to become a real issue (~2ish ft). (Yes, I'm aware for real voice recording you'd want to be much closer than this, but the vast majority of time I just use this mic for Discord chats and I tend to sit back in my chair so I wanted to see if this product could help with that.) I then recorded to Audacity, and used software amplify to bring them all up to consistent volumes so the speaking would be consistently loud across all the tests

IMO not better than just an equivalently priced mixer

 So you want to keep the cable between this and the mic as short as possible. But beyond that, even though this is at a higher price than some of the other boosters, this is very much top quality and does provide value. Now, based on the audio test as well as frequency analysis, I have to say that the CL1 is a very transparent microphone preamp. There really was nothing across any of the frequency ranges that would make me think or hear that there's any coloration to the sound going on

 So let's check it out. Now the vast majority of mic boosters are advertised as giving us clean gain. In the case of the CL1, 25 dB, which is quite a bit. And this can be great if we have a very long cable run and we want to make sure we have good signal

 We'll start out with the most basic test, which is just you listening to my voice both with and without the Cloudlifter. So I've moved the microphone, the SM7B, which is arguably a quite gain hungry mic over to my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. I think that's representative of what a lot of people have, and I have no Cloudlifter here. So this is directly into the 8i6

 And that's where, again, that extra boost is going to help keep noise to a minimum. Now, we're told that the CL1 gives us 25 decibels of boost. So I'm going to test that to see if we get it. But more than just on the basic signal, I want to see if we're getting an even 25 dB of boost across all frequency ranges, because if that's not the case, that means it's going to be coloration of the sound

It requires about +60dB of clean gain.  If your preamp can deliver that, then you will not need a CL1.

Now to the question above, firstly is a Cloudlifter required for twitch streaming ?

I get that the general purpose of a Cloudlifter is to increase the mics Gain, since aparently according to the internet the SM7B is a very silent mic. But I've read multiple reddit post and sime people say it's a must while others claim it isn't (workload specific). Could anyone elaborate any further?

Also Ive heard the audio interface you chose could theoretically replace a Cloudlifter, but I have yet to decide on which one to get, was looking at Yamaha AG06. Advice would be welcome.

Does the SM7B require a Cloudlifter, if it's main purpose is Streaming on twitch ?

Don't get for Shure SM7B + GoXLR

 What I'm looking for is a difference, and on a linear basis, I can't see anything here that would be enough that you would hear coloration from the CL1, but let's check out the log comparison as well. And looking at the log comparison, I see only a slight deviation in that 5-600 Hz area as well as at the very top, maybe a small amount at the very lowest frequencies, but overall again I wouldn't say there's any significant coloration here. What about boost though? Let's check out and see just how much boost we're actually getting. To measure boost across the entire sine sweep of 20-20,000 Hz, I set up to record in the isolation box again at a level of minus 40 dB on a peak

 There really was nothing across any of the frequency ranges that would make me think or hear that there's any coloration to the sound going on. And in terms of boost, I measured 24 dB, they advertised 25. That certainly is accurate enough. I have to say there's plenty of gain here with this booster

 What about boost though? Let's check out and see just how much boost we're actually getting. To measure boost across the entire sine sweep of 20-20,000 Hz, I set up to record in the isolation box again at a level of minus 40 dB on a peak. Now I'll add up the CL1. And now I've added the CloudLifter in between the SM7B and the Universal Audio 710

Hey! I’ve got a Royer R10 ribbon mic going into a Neve 511 pre to my interface. I still feel like I have to crank it to get signal and am getting a lot of noise with it. Would the cloud lifter solve this or is that tool a gimmick like other forums say 😂

<p>UPDATE: i just tried my R10 on all of my external pres and for whatever reason noise floor is down..I did re wire my whole rig yesterday so maybe I had something in a weird spot no idea. First, i got a good level with my main condenser on all my pres (including my UA interface pres) to make sure there was no excess noise. Then i went and plugged in my R10 and only had to move the gain up a little (no +48 of course) to get it to a same place and like a miracle, no excessive noise! I still do plan on buying a mic booster for the future mics that will need it and to use with this mic as a little boost wouldnt hurt but want to thank everyone for their opinions and feedback on this!</p>

Cloud lift…again

its a real relief to find out that this product really works . noise in video is a real problem but guess what ? so as sound ! it has noise that is really hard to take out; Especially with software/edited it kills all the sound gains in the amps! this unit simply does the work! by eliminating the noise on your dynamic mics. very satisfied about this Brand I gave it a 4 stars that is in the high 5 but the price is a bit high ? that's one star off ! but the quality is unbelievable . I would buy another set of 2's eventually hope their will be on sale?

 So let me put the meter back down to about 1150 so I can talk to the right volume. And about there is perfect. So you can see this little device can give you a lot of gain, clean gain, without you having to crank on your field recorders. Now, I would recommend if you get the Shure SM7B or low output microphones in general, you pick up one of these, or again, one of the Fet Heads

 And I went from about 1150 all the way to three o'clock. Now, the preamps on the Zoom F4 are pretty good, so I'm just gonna be quiet so you can hear if you hear any noise. Now, mind you, I do have my PC running, so you might hear the fans there, but I'm just gonna be quiet for a second so you can hear the noise floor. All right, and what I'm gonna do now is plug in the Cloud Lifter one more time so you can see how much less gain I actually have to put in, because this thing is doing all the work

Okay, I actually have to talk really quiet because I haven't yet set the gain, but you can see just by plugging this in that it increases the gain by a lot, and it's clean gain. It's really nice

 That means you don't have to crank up on the gain on your recorder and you'll get less noise. So let's take a look at this and let's try it out with the Shure SM7B. So taking a quick look at the cloud lifter CL1, you can see this is all metal build and honestly, it's not going to go anywhere. It is made of this metal and all you need to do is plug in your XLR from your microphone to this and then your XLR out to this into your recorder
