 It's not a 5 star knife because it does have issues. For example, the blade steel is not great; it's shape is interesting but a bit awkward to use. The pivot uses a nylon washer, which isn't as smooth as ball bearings and will probably wear out much sooner. But for 25 bucks or so, these issues are not greater than the look and feel of this knife (to me)

Cool knife, but...

 Especially the finger cut out in the blade - arrived very sharp  Cons - will not flip all the way open with a normal finger flick. I need to use my wrist to help flip the blade out. - upon closing the blade with one hand - unlock the frame lock and the blade easily starts to close. It gets slightly hung up on a detent of some kind so I need to give it an extra push

Pros, Cons, and Dreams

  Overall good knife (especially for the price!) but the cons will keep me on the search for another EDC.

This is my first CRKT knife and the quality is great. I love the weight and feel of the knife. Its heavy for a little guy but I'm more concerned with durability over low weight. The blade has a nice sharp edge that easily rips thru boxes and other everyday items

The thumb hole is a welcomed difference over a thumb peg and I find it very easy to open with one hand. I also like the smaller size, better for everyday use

Better be careful with one handed closure

 I give this one to Kershaw simply bc the slightly longer blade length is going to be more practical. I will say tho, the blade tip on the CRKT is just cooler looking  Both use similar (albeit not exactly the same) locking mechanisms. And while the Kershaw does have the liner lock slightly protruding from the frame allowing for easy use, the CRKT is just easier. There is more grip available for your thumb and you never question yourself when using the lock one handed without looking

 And it feels a little cheaper simply bc G10 is used all around instead of only one side like the CRKT.  Blade length: Kershaw is longer but both stay under 3 inches. I give this one to Kershaw simply bc the slightly longer blade length is going to be more practical.   Both knives open very smoothly however the Kershaw is able to reach locked position with more ease than the CRKT. The CRKT offers a nicer sounding and feeling click when reaching locked position but I give this win to Kershaw as I prefer function over vanity. I think the Kershaw is simply better designed in this regard even if the CRKT has that nice feel.  Another win for the Kershaw comes when comparing the overall ease-of-use design itself

  I don't know of too many knives, that I am interested in, with chromoly steel blades so I can't say how well it will hold up at this point. I know the blade on the Spyderco PM2 is SV30, which is super hard steel and it takes a while to wear the edge. However, SV30 is so hard, I lost the tip (maybe first millimeter or so) the first couple weeks I got the knife. Perhaps chromoly is a bit softer, since chromoly is what is used in some firearm barrels

  G10 scales would have been lighter, which she does complain about the weight, even with the small Pilar, but the aesthetics overcomes the weight for her. However, the small Pilar doesn't come with G10, or seemly does not. The stainless scales are fine also, since we mostly find ourselves needing a knife in wet environments. Go figure

It is not good value - it's excellent value

Normally a knife this size would be a three-fingered grip but the large choil provides a place to put the index finger which allows for a full four-fingered grip

 Although this is a good thing, the sacrifice is reduced capability when slicing. A narrower blade is better for that but would cause hot spots on those two fingers in a short amount of time. Based on the design limitations I think this was a good choice.

For less than $30 I think this is a great knife. I really like how compact it is while still allowing a full grip. It has excellent utility and carries reasonably small in the pocket which are very good things in an EDC knife.

The blade has a decent edge on it from the factory but likely will require regular maintenance to keep a keen edge due to the budget steel it's made from. The blade is very thick to improve comfort for the thumb and index finger. Although this is a good thing, the sacrifice is reduced capability when slicing. A narrower blade is better for that but would cause hot spots on those two fingers in a short amount of time

CRKT Pilar - Excellent compact folding knife for the price

  The action when deploying the blade is what I would call deliberate. It is reasonably smooth but definitely not flickable. This is mostly due to the framelock design which always causes drag on the blade. Whether that is good or bad depends on your preference
