2021 DIAMONDBACK METRIC 1 700C - @MiddletownCycling

I've rode bikes all my life and always had a blast riding them, but I've never had one that wasn't a "Craigslist special" - their issues have ranged from "can mostly ride in a straight line" to "brakes will accidentally activate and send you flying". My most recent model that a friend found on the side of the road has the bar in exactly the right position (a diagonal upward angle) to push directly into my crotch during riding. Given that I can't afford to keep a car in this economy, I wanted to look into getting a bike to fill my transportation needs instead - but since I'd be using it more regularly and as my sole source of transportation, I wanted to see if I could get a decent one this time.

Strolling into my local bike shop was not a good idea. I knew there were plenty of high-end bikes out there that would use exceptionally good parts, so I fully expected not to walk out of the shop with one; however, I did not expect to see anything even remotely close to $7,000. That was what the majority of the bikes on display were listed at, however. I have never spun around and walked out of a store so fast in my entire life.

Figuring it was probably just geared towards racers and deeply involved hobbyists, I tried another shop in town - a "Trek". I'd heard good things about them and figured they would be better, and they were... A little. The problem I noticed there (since the prices were reasonable enough that I didn't just bolt away this time) was that there were still plenty of bikes I considered to be out of my range, and the bikes that were closer to it... Didn't look any better than the ones that consistently failed me within a couple months time in my youth. It was one thing to pay $50 and get a clunker, but it was another thing entirely to see a similar bike priced at $800.

Switching to the dice rolling of Marketplace gave me the polar extremes - plenty of rusty hunks of junk that wouldn't last two rides for $75, and loads of nicer bikes for over $1,000. I appreciate the engineering that goes into a good bike, but not nearly enough to justify spending anywhere near that kind of price; and I don't see much point in getting another trash-heap on wheels, either. The midpoint I was searching for seemingly does not exist.

Long story short - I think I've been completely priced out of the bicycle world, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. How much do I need to readjust my expectations? Is this where the pricing for bikes tends to actually be, or is it just my community being overzealous?
