Hi folks, so you may or may not know. But last December I had nose surgery for some sinus issues and along the way I found out that I'm allergic to quite a few airborne pollutants. Nothing really major, but just a lot of them on the minor end of things. So since then, I've put a greater emphasis on cleaning the air in my working environment and making it a little bit safer and cleaner for me to actually work in here long term

I should have done this I should have bought this before I made all the changes so that I could see the before and after to see truly how effective each change was. but I simply didn't I bought this afterwards just to monitor the air and that's that. So real quick to get into some numbers

 It's not going to fluctuate much, it'll bounce around 10 or 15 up or down, but that'll give you a good average of what that atmosphere is like.  I currently use a Dylos 1100 pro but will soon be testing P. urple Air units. I try to keep pm2.5 levels below 2micro grams/m3 , and find this easy to do with infrequent use of my purifiers

I was thinking of putting some of my air purifiers on a smart outlet so I can only run it at certain times of the day. The thinking is that if I’m not going to be in the room, I can turn it off so that it’s not using the air filters and wearing them out unnecessarily. 

For example, we’re not in one entire floor all night and we would turn it off there at night and then kick it on about an hour before we wake up.

Does this make sense and theoretically if I run it half the time, does it extend my filters from 6 month replacement to 1 year?

 This is a simple conversion that would be very easily done by any smart phone. More importantly, the graphics capabilities of smart phones would greatly enhance the utility of the data by revealing nuances that would escape examination of discrete data packets. Finally, the use of Bluetooth and smart phones would eliminate the cumbersome interface and provide a time stamp with the data.

 You can purchase an interface port to connect the unit to a computer and you can buy a battery-operated unit that includes the interface port. However, it is a cumbersome interface and requires a USB to COM port adapter cable. I did not purchase the port or the battery operated unit because of the cumbersome nature of the interface, and the requirement of a computer to process the data. My initial use reveals a unit that produces reproducible results (typical standard deviations are 10% or less), and fulfills my need to assess the air quality of my home

 At best, it provides a rough indication of how bad the air may be. The particle concentration data is stored internally, and you can toggle between a display that shows minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, or day-to-day data. However, the data does not have a time stamp, it only provides a relative time base. If you unplug the unit (or if there is a power failure), the stored data is lost

 Let's see what's on the back on the back I think. yeah, so this has oops if I get it. So there's the the air quality chart. It doesn't really work great for what I see, but hopefully that's readable

 So when I closed it up it slowly worked down and the levels dropped way down inside the garage just with the two fans running. So you can see this has dropped over a hundred since we closed up the door and eventually it will reach a steady state. but with the three fans, that steady state is much lower than which than just with a single fan. So yeah, that's the that's what I wanted to show is just the effect of you know, having two of those fans and it's just the box fans with the hepa filters

 that's why I I recommend this as a dust sensor. Granite's a little bit expensive, but it works really cool and I also recommend the fan and filter combinations because they definitely work really well and you can see it's now down almost to 1400 instead of 15 and 16 and 1700. So yeah, hopefully it was useful for somebody to see. But those box fans and uh, I definitely recommend the two-inch filters versus the one-inch filter because there's much more airflow

Personally I use a Dylos 1100 Pro to measure, test and experiement all things PM pollution related. This device has a resolution of .01micro gram/m3 and a pump to take sample every couple of seconds. Purple Air also has meters that have a good reputation although I've never  used one

There's lots of sites that theoretically review different air purifiers, but some only congregate user reviews &amp; I've seen others (eg breathequality) noted as untrustworthy. Certain brands are popular on Wirecutter/Wired/etc comparisons that seem more reliable, but there's also some brands (eg Renpho) I'm seeing better deals for (especially at Walmart?) that haven't made it on these lists. How much should I trust recommendations on sites like modern castle, fresh air guide, toms guide, etc? 

I'd like to know which units are actually the most effective (for price) &amp; not just marketing claims or whether a few random people *felt* like they're a good buy. (Priority concerns are COVID/viruses, dust, &amp;  allergies - not so much smoke/pollution/smell/pets/etc.) TBH I was hoping to find some intro docs or pinned comparisons on here, but IDK if they exist.


[If anyone wants to just give me recommendations, I'm looking to cover a kitchen &amp; dining room in a mid sized open floor plan. Looking at Coway 200m (seems like variation of Mighty on sale cheaper?), Winix 5500 &amp; C535 (is the latter a Walmart version of the former?), Blue air 211, &amp; kinda overwhelmed by all the Honeywell &amp; Renpho options for larger spaces that *look* like potentially best bang for my buck but seem less well regarded. Also considering a DIY Corsi Rosenthal box, probably with 10x25 or 20x30 MERV 13 filters depending on room, which should be the cheapest, but there's some family concern about lacking true HEPA filtration (which box fans can't handle), clunkiness/ fit factor, &amp; ease of cleaning.

Where to find reliable (scientifically backed) reviews/comparisons?

5 PM, but contains humidity sensors, a mobile app, and has IFTTT integration has proven to be much more worthwhile purchases. Part of this is because I've combined that sensor with smart outlets connected to air purifiers which turn on automatically when the air quality is bad.

I had the Dylos DC1100 Pro for 7-8 months before it stopped working. While it was working, it provided readings that more or less reflected the quality of the air shown on other air quality sensors I own. Enough to know if I needed to open a window after cooking. It was hard to be sure how accurate it was because the unit of measurement is non-standard for measuring air quality, but I've read elsewhere it is usually very accurate

 So if I turn on a HEPA filter for a few hours in a well sealed room and one can get that number down to 60. That's cool, so it appears that both the HEPA and the meter are working. Take it to more regular neighborhoods and it reads more like 600. Then night comes and people start burning wood fires and it goes up to 2000

It picks up smog that cheaper meters are totally unaware of, the small particle stuff that they say is the worst for you.  I'm at a busy intersection and outside air registers 1500-3000 on the small .5um scale. The sticker lists this as very bad air

5 or PM10 or AQI right? Nope, they are NONE of these. They are a particle concentration amount that can't be compared to any common measure used today. So it can convert to other common measure, right? NOPE. Read the web and you can find 200 different ways to convert these numbers, but all these formulas all yield widely different results

  So in the end, a frustrating device that could have been improved greatly by the manufacturer if they only cared to. They didn't.  I should also add, on the back of the device is a sticker stating which particle counts are good, bad, very poor air, etc. based on the small count (larger number) reading

 Even going from "Monitor mode" to "Continuous Mode" is certainly harder than it should be.  So does it work? The numbers seem to increase with more particles in the air, but without any standard measure, nobody has any idea of the accuracy of this thing, and I'm sure the manufacturer likes it that way.  But at other times the company has said you can take (small particle - large particle)/100 to get an estimate for PM2.5. So lets look at that, lets say small particle in 2000, right in the middle of the "poor" range. Lets say large particles is zero for the sake of argument

Overall not a good product/warranty policy for the price of the unit

 I was able to rig up a 9v battery adapter for less than $10.00.  With the bad stuff out of the way, this device is the real deal. Forget about those $100-$200 Chinese-made units with fancy displays

 In one test I put the Dylos up against a calibrated IGERESS "Newest Improved Air Quality Detector". I smacked a dirty dog bed next to both of them, and the Dylos instantly recognized the 2.5 micron particles (shot up to 120+), while the Chinese unit moved from 1 to 3.  While the IGERESS has a fancy interface and is much less expensive than the Dylos, I returned the IGERESS and am keeping the Dylos
