If you don't mind giving losing out slightly in terms of battery life and suction power compared to the Dyson V15 Detect's in exchange for a lower price point, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is among the best stick vacuums for pet hair that we've tested. It uses the same particle sensor and improves upon the V15's automatic power adjustment capability by not only adjusting suction power to match the surface it's on, but also the concentration of debris on the ground. It easily clears away pet hair across a wide range of surface types when used with either its multi-surface floorhead or its secondary floorhead with a soft brushroll, intended for use on hard floors. The brushrolls for both floorheads, as well as its miniature turbo brush attachment, are easily removable, making it a cinch to clear away any tangled hair.

Its smaller dustbin has about a third the capacity of the V15, but is also endemic of its smaller, lighter motor unit, which makes it easier to pick up and carry and to maneuver in cluttered areas whether it's used in its stick or handheld configuration. Unfortunately, like the V15, build quality isn't especially impressive, with an easily-dented metal wand and floorhead wheels that can get clogged up with small debris.

If you're willing to spend a premium on a versatile cordless model for the inside of your car, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the best car vacuum we've tested. When configured as a handheld vacuum, it's remarkably lightweight and very compact, allowing you to clean all parts of your car's interior with ease. It has some handy accessories, like a miniature turbo brush for cleaning fabric seats and floormats, a crevice tool for cleaning tight corners, and a combination upholstery tool/soft bristle dusting brush. All these attachments can be mounted to the end of its wand, giving you a bit of added reach when clearing debris from the deepest recesses of your car's trunk.

Battery performance is pretty strong, as it can run for almost 70 minutes in its most energy-efficient 'Eco' mode, which will give you plenty of time to deal with large amounts of lightweight debris. However, you'll probably need to empty its dustbin before long, as it's pretty small.

The best lightweight vacuum we've tested is the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. It packs many of the features found in the pricier, heavier Dyson V15 Detect into a smaller, easier-to-handle package. It can automatically increase its suction power on carpet or whenever it passes over an area with a large concentration of debris and has a built-in particle sensor to inform you of allergen quantities inside your home. In addition to its primary multi-surface floorhead, it also comes with a floorhead with a soft roller and a laser light to help identify fine debris and pet hair on hard floors. It can run for up to an hour on a charge, which is pretty lengthy by the standards of this type of vacuum.

Performance on bare floors is exceptional, and it does a very good job of handling debris on low and high-pile carpet. Unfortunately, its dirt compartment is very small and consequently needs emptying often. If you don't mind using a slightly larger, heavier vacuum with a bigger dustbin, the Samsung Jet 90 Complete is a good alternative.

This cordless stick vacuum is lighter than most other full-size stick vacuums, making it a cinch to carry up and down long flights of stairs. Like other Dyson stick vacuums, you can quickly convert it into a handheld configuration to better clean tight spots. It's well-suited to cleaning a variety of floor types, as it comes with a soft roller for better debris pickup on bare surfaces like vinyl or hardwood and a multi-surface floorhead that you can use on carpeting. Like the pricier, heavier Dyson V15 Detect, its soft roller has a built-in laser light to help you see fine debris on hard surfaces, and the vacuum can automatically increase its suction power on carpets or when it encounters an area with a large concentration of debris.

However, this vacuum's dustbin is very small, forcing you to empty it regularly. If that's a concern, the Samsung Jet 90 Complete is a great comparably-priced alternative that delivers broadly similar debris pickup performance and has a dustbin about three times as large. That said, it's heavier than the Dyson and lacks its automatic power adjustment feature.

good performance, needs better ergonomics

The Xiaomi K15 Pro is only 1/3 of the price of the Dyson though…. I found both of them to be a bit heavier than expected. The V12 Slim was very light but far too small for my house. Is the Dyson the best for my needs?

  To have a powerful machine that is both lightweight and cordless has definitely catapulted me into a new world...not trying to sound dramatic, but this is definitely a different animal
