 #6 - The R1850DB pair are pretty good as TV speakers to our Sony Bravia. Better than the cheap soundbar we bought 5 years ago and rarely use. But worth $199? I don't think so. Maybe it's my age

 I suppose okay for gamers. But not for stereo sound especially in large room with high ceilings. They sound better the closer you stand to them. Stinks

I thought my 45 yr old Hitachi speakers that were about 2 ft tall and foot wide and weighed 25 lbs each were well past their usefulness, almost wish I never threw them out just days ago. I'm looking for recommendations for speakers to replace my pair of [Edifier R1280DB](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0719C132V). I find the sound is a bit thin and not particularly loud or impressive. 

They will be used for TV/movies, and listening to jazz and rock through high-def streaming services. I don't like speakers that have a ton of bass and I am drawn to those claiming to be more like 'monitors' that are supposed to sound like what the recording engineers and artists meant. I'm an amateur musician and have a somewhat decent ear.

It's important that they sound good at lower volumes. 

The room is approx. 12x20.

A Bluetooth connection is a bonus, but not a deal-breaker. 

The output from my Mac Mini computer is a 1/8' 'headphone' jack. I currently use a 1/8 to RCA plugs with the Edifiers. No optical out. 

$200 is ideal, but I could be convinced to go higher.

I like the 'bookshelf' compact size of my Edifiers and wouldn't want much bigger. 

I like the convenience and minimalism of powered, but if there's a tiny amp with passive speaker option I should consider, please let me know.

I live in Canada.

 The 1850DB do not sound any better, they just get a little louder. Not worth double the cost IMO. I regret not spending the extra money and getting the Klipsch RP41M powered bookshelves instead.  Overall build quality of the speakers is excellent, but the remote is about the same as you would get from a $10 radio from walmart

I bought these to upgrade my TV speakers from the Behringer MS20 monitors. There's no doubt they are an overall upgrade, especially in mids/trebel sound production.. but they have a little less bass than the cheap Behringer's, and it makes them feel quite lacking

No bass

 I bought these to "upgrade" my A2+'s. Sound quality was better than expected but like other things, the longer you have them the more you are left wanting more. I eventually added the sub and it makes a huge difference. You get what you pay for so don't expect phenomenal quality out of this brand

Overall good but not great

This worked flawlessly but wasn't up to the quality sound that I needed. I ended up spending another $50 and going with the Fluance powered speaker. I have read that the $350 Edifier might have quality sound also but have not tried it. This would be fine for typical computer audio type stuff

You ever sit in a '92 Geo Metro or Toyota Tercel and turn up the radio on the crappy 5" factory speakers? Then you go and sit in your grandpas Buick and turn on the same music. The sound quality is noticeably better even though they are just baseline car speakers? Your grandpa isn't running amps or subs, but the experience will be appreciably different

 There is no excuse for that sort of audio at this price point, when you can spend just a tiny bit more and get some KRK's with the same functionality. - The Sub output is nice, but requiring a powered sub woofer to fill in what you are otherwise missing is UNACCEPTABLE. I thought it would be a nice bonus, but it is REQUIRED to hear most of the audio spectrum not produced by these speakers. And once you go $300 into these speakers and a sub - you really experience buyers remorse

  I strongly recommend you go to a store and listen to some speakers yourself before you buying anything. If they do not carry the brand there is probably a reason. You can hear for yourself what you want and see what you can afford.  Look elsewhere for something better, or keep saving your money for something more worth the investment

With the increase in car build quality the manufacturer is afforded more room for bigger and better speakers. These Edifier's are the Tercel, disguised as something more expensive than the Buick, but at a price point that is just too high for the quality

Overpriced and Under powered. Look for something better.

  The best thing I can say about these is that they look fairly decent and they definitely don't feel cheaply made - relatively speaking. I would have much preferred a worse-looking speaker and/or cheaper housing/aesthetics for improved sound quality.  I highly recommend you do not waste your money on these. I guarantee you that even two small homepod mini's synced to stereo mode would sound better than these

 After searching around online and reading reviews I believed these would have a similar, if not better, quality than the ones I had used before.  Unfortunately, these were nowhere close to the previous pair of edifiers. The other ones, which were around a similar price if I remember correctly, sounded all right. You could often go to 70-80% volume without distortion, any bass boosting was significant or not noticeable, and there was no fuzziness, distortion, etc

 I purchased mine for 250 and right now they are 240 for the pair. These are also passive, so you'd need to get at least a cheap amp/avr, but I promise you that 100-150 extra dollars could easily get you a sound quality that trumps this in every way. I am by no means saying that an extra 100-150 dollars would be insignificant compared to a 200 dollar speaker, but I am saying that 200 dollars is a lot of money to get this trash just to know that you could have saved your money a little bit longer and gotten speakers that would sound angelic. I intended to return these but failed to remind myself to follow through on the return window and am now stuck with a pair of speakers I don't even feel comfortable trying to resell despite being basically new

 whatsoever. These, on the other hand, consistently produce a static hissing noise, sound distorted at even low-mid volumes, and add bass all the way to the highest pitch sounds - even when you turn the bass adjustment knob all the way down.  For 200 dollars I was not expecting much. I was at least expecting my past experience with edifier

The result sounded excellent (ignoring intangibles like "presence" or "imaging" or "coherence" which I can't judge standalone)
