 Now I'm spinning around the microphone to determine what the actual polar pattern is and how the audio changes as we move around the microphone's capsule. Now I'm typing on a keyboard with Cherry MX Blues directly behind the mic to see how much of my voice versus how much of the keyboard it picks up. Now I'm right up on top of the microphone to demonstrate what kind of proximity effect you're able to get out of this microphone. Now I'm about a foot away from the microphone

 First off, everything comes in this really nice semi-hardshell carrying case. You obviously get the microphone, you get the pre-installed microphone mount, you get a 5 eighths to 3 eighths inch microphone stand adapter, and you get some documentation slash warranty information. As far as the build quality, this thing feels just absolutely amazing. It has an all metal body, a metal grill that runs all the way down the side, which I believe is responsible for the variable D technology in this microphone, which is a proprietary technology that EV has that helps eliminate the proximity effect when you get right up on the microphone

Electro Voice RE320 Broadcast Dynamic Mic Review / Test

I've got a pretty deep voice, and also have a Shure SM7B. Either I don't have something set up correctly or this microphone just does not match my voice at all....or perhaps my understanding and expectations about mics in general are completely off. I understand that different mics compliment different voices and you need to find the right match. The main issue is that my voice sounds very low with no highs at all, And there's a digital scratchiness inherent in all recordings no matter my signal path. Do all microphones have this? My expectation is that my voice would sound exactly reproduced and buttery smooth. But that's not the case. 

So let's talk through this. I bought the Shure based on reputation. However when I record, there are three main issues. First there's a bit of crackle or static somewhere in the mid to high range. Second, It's just a dark sounding microphone without very many highs. Third to get a quality recording I need to be about an inch or two off of the front of the mic, which I understand causes proximity effect, but I actually like the tone of proximity effect, however this may be part of the issue. An analysis follows:

Regarding the first issue, I have mogami gold cables brand new all plugged in properly. I run the mic into a cloud lifter and then into a DBX 286, into the solid state logic SSL2. I have tried every combination of signal routing, from microphone directly into interface, with and without cloud lifter, with and without 286. Regardless I still always have a little bit of staticky crackle. 

Regarding the second issue I understand this is a darker microphone, And perhaps I would do better with an RE20 or Heil 40. But there's literally no way for me to test either I have to order them as we are in a very rural area. 

Regarding the third issue, I'm beginning to wonder if my voice in general which is very deep and fairly powerful, maybe the SM7B just can't handle my certain frequencies. I've tried all sorts of EQ from increasing the high presence in the DBX286 to post-production EQ boosting and shelving. But that just adds presence and sparkle to a still dull and low sounding recording. I actually like the sound of proximity effect. But for testing purposes I've tried numerous positions. About a fist length away, I get a lot of room reverb and the voice sounds distant and hollow. I know that's a part of needing a better recording space, but the first problem still persists as well. 

I play back my recordings through the SSL 2 using a combination of Sennheiser HD 25, HD 600, and mackie MR824 and the results are always the exact same.


TLDR; shure SM7B sounds like shit with my low voice, perhaps an EV RE20 would be better, but my expectations are off.

 So here we are in a busy environment this is a coffee shop called gathering gather just below where our podcast studio is actually and this is the Electrovoice RE320 just figuring out how it sounds in a kind of busy environment obviously lots of people around lots of background noise what do you guys think do you think it sounds clear can you hear what I'm saying does the background noise overwhelm what I'm trying to say or does it kind of just sound like a nice busy fun environment some people like to record podcasts like this it's obviously it's quite a relaxed environment it's not like being in a sort of cold studio so sometimes the ambience can add to it so now let's go upstairs to our podcast studio and road test this in a better environment with some sound treatment on the walls and see how it sounds there in comparison to this rather trendy cafe. All right we've now got this mic set up here in our podcasting studio which is the ideal space for doing a recording because it's nice and quiet we've also got sound treatment on the walls to stop any kind of echo so this is really the ideal environment for using any kind of microphone and what do you think how's the sound quality we've kind of gone from being in an office environment which is probably where a lot of people are going to be recording to something completely on the other end of the spectrum a busy cafe downstairs and now we're here in our podcasting studio so this will give you a good idea of how this microphone sounds comment below and let us know what you think of the Electrovoice RE320. Electro-Voice RE320 Microphone Review

My favorite dynamic in that range: Electro-Voice RE320 (pushed midrange, vintage broadcast sound, basically no proximity effect, despite being dynamic the openness feels like a condenser- despite it being more affordable than the RE20, I prefer the RE320 due to the enhanced clarity). Both of those mics have a distinct sonic signature and don’t work for everything.

My roommate has his own audio technica AT2020 which I can borrow anytime. I don't really mind buying mics under 200$ since I can just borrow my roommate's mic when I need to record. 

I don't have any idea or a lot of idea on good condenser and dynamic mics like what what is the best model or product yet. All i know is AT2020 is already a good mic for it's price.

To save my money long term, my idea is to just buy a good mic that is worth $500-$600 since I don't have to worry about using my roommate's mic. When I buy my own mic, my roommate can also borrow it and i don't really mind. I just want to also have my own, but I'm not rushing.

I'm gonna start reviewing what is the best mic under 500 or 600 but I just want to know what are your suggestions or what do you think is the best so I know where to start reviewing thoroughly while saving my time.

What is the best dynamic/condenser microphone under 500$

Let's just say this is a super pricey item. I know the mics are alot, but come on just for a shock mount you can buy a amp. But with that out of the way, I would like too say it works. Just careful

Pricey, Sturdy, But Not Needed.

 So if I get this setting here down to kick drum, now I've set it to kick drum and this time the frequency response has been tailored hopefully to pick up a kick drum just that little bit better. So this is the sound of it now with the kick drum setting. Some people have said that they actually prefer the sound of this with the kick drum setting with that, I think it's got something sucked out down in the bass and then a boost in the bass as well. So there's a kind of a boost and a suck out somewhere down there to make kick drum sound really clear but some people like it with the voice

 The 320 has a cardioid polar pattern and it comes with two responses actually. There's a switch on it where you can take it from general to kick curve. So general is the one where it says the frequency response goes from 45 hertz to 18 kilohertz and the kick curve has a special dip in it put into it where it will make the kick drum, the bass drum sound a bit more punchy and that goes from 45 to 18 kilohertz. Microphone has an impedance of 150 ohms

 If you get something like the Rode podcaster, you get the same kind of thing. This physical weight of this thing is quite a lot on the end of a boom arm. So if I get this setting here down to kick drum, now I've set it to kick drum and this time the frequency response has been tailored hopefully to pick up a kick drum just that little bit better. So this is the sound of it now with the kick drum setting

i'd spend the extra cash on better mics. forget the 'cheap kick mic' and '57 clone' and by better mics. some examples in your budget: Beyerdynamic m201, Beyerdynamic m88, Electro Voice RE320, Warm Audio 47jr. If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff

I'm recording an EP/Album with my band, where i'm the sound engineer, producer and will do the mixes as well. Seeing as I have all those responsibilities I am also in charge of the shopping list. We have a budget of around 900€ which is around 1000 USD. A part of the budget will be spent on cables and mic stands, we're also buying a headphone amp and 4 pairs of AKG K-52 headphones for monitoring while recording/rehearsing. I'm also buying a palmer re amp box in case it's needed and I already have a pair of AKG P120's (which i plan on using as overheads) a 58, a pair of pencils, 57 clone, a real 57 and an Studio Projects C1 mic, we're also buying another 57 clone a Shure 57 beta A and a cheap kick mic. We have +/- 500€ left in our budget and i honestly can't decide on what to do with it. A part of me thinks that it'd be great to have a switchable pattern condenser like a Rode NT2a and a cheap ribbon microphone, or if I should keep it simple and buy a tube pre amp like a ART MPA II or a SPL Gold Mike with the remainder of the budget. I don't know if those 500€ spent on the pre amp will make that big of a difference (that I cant emulate with good pre amp plugins) or if I should just buy more mics and have more diversity.

To Pre or not to Pre

I do a podcast and wanted the best microphone possible for it. The two standards are the EV RE20 and the Shure SM7B (I have both). As my boom is anchored to the wall there was really no need for this shock mount, but I figured, "Hey, it's an expensive microphone, let me baby the thing." The design of the mount is okay, but where it screws into the boom, it comes loose all the time
