 We've got this kind of claw tail piece back here, which you can see the claw, let me get in there. Tune-O-Matic bridge, these big brand new nasty, I say nasty in a good way, 760 humbuckers. We've got the vintage inspired controls which is volume, blend and tone. And jumbo frets, the gear ratios on these are 17 to 1 for increased accuracy and of course 2x2 design

 So let's listen to both. So let's go to the extreme and again this tone control is all the way up and this is going to be just the bridge pickup. Now I'm going to take the tone control and roll that back all the way down. You hear how it's choked and how it's muffled

Epiphone EB-3 SG

.I was using the Boss DS-1 guitar pedal split on a separate channel, so you're not losing that low end and yeah, I think it sounded absolutely wicked. Sometimes a big distortion like that can take over the tone and you won't know what bass it is underneath, but I think this had a special character compared to something like my Blue AMP. I bought this with the intent of buying it, reviewing it, selling it on again like I do with most of the gear, but this one's got a special place in my heart, I think

 The neck itself is a D shape but it still feels really comfortable, not too big, easier to play than a 50s big fat neck D bass. This is a set neck construction so it feels amazing the way that the notes resonate through the body. The fretboard itself feels like it's got a bit of a gloss on there as well which is a really nice touch and makes it even faster to play. The fret edges are absolutely fine

 I think it's just got this beautiful aesthetic to it which appeals to me, a modern player and who likes that vintage kind of aesthetic. So I think that's it for this one, you know.  It's one of those basses where you can almost hear it before you've had it in your hands. You just kind of know what it's going to sound like and that sound was going to be amazing. And that is the case, as you would have heard in the intro and in the section when we jump into the sounds later on. So I think the Embassy is a rework of one of their earliest 60s basses

I also have an Epiphone Embassy, all the tbird sound without the ergonomic issues. Might be worth a look.

Thunderbird Ergonomics for people with small bodies

I also think the Epiphone Embassy is underrated. P bass-feeling neck, Tbird pickups, and super light. Not sexy to look at maybe, depends on your tastes, but they cover a lot of ground.

Personally, I think thunderbirds deserves *way* more attention than they receive. On the flipside though, I’ve just never quite had those Hofner basses really click with me. I’ve never seen them genuinely applicable in a situation beyond a Beatles tribute act.

This should be an interesting discussion. What are other peoples’ takes?

What do you think is the most overrated/underrated bass model?

I love the tone of the Gibson Thunderbird, especially with a pick, but I really, really don't want to give Gibson any money. I see that EMG has their Phoenix 1004, but I don't know if I'm going to get a tone that's close to the Thunderbird.

With how crazy prices are getting on new and used gear I'm curious if there are any brands or models that get overlooked?

For example, my friend bought a peavey t-40 for about $200  ten years ago. Those go for over $1000 now.

Are there any undervalued instruments to be on the lookout for?

Epiphone Embassy - super light, and balls as big as watermelons. Does a good P bass tone (I normally play a P bass).

Also - I second the comments about getting a wider strap for that P bass, 2.5-3”, unless you’re already there.

Approaching mid 60s and a recurring back issue makes it difficult to play my Fender P-Bass for long periods of time.

Been thinking about a semi hollow body, but no.shops within miles of me stock them, so I can tell if there really is a weight difference.

What should I be looking for? Semi hollow? Short scale? Or something else?

I play mostly cover versions from country to pop, some rock.

Oh and I play 4 string (don't judge me)...
