 After adjusting the pickups screws to match the string height and getting all the horrible wax off them, I'd argue that this is as good as any Epi I've ever played as far as pups and all, so don't hesitate there because I don't really care for Epis and I'm in love with it. (I bought this to sell mainly, but now????) The build quality; hmm, if you can do guitar work go for it. Otherwise I'd highly recommend a more expensive model. The $299 models are great right out of the box usually

 The neck angle was so off the A string rattled no matter how high I set the bridge. The guitar would not intonate due to the ridiculous angle. Yes I could have sent it back but I suspect I would have gotten another just like it. I had to spend about 6 hours shimming the neck AND the nut (Never had to do this to the nut on an electric, not even on a used guitar

 I play through a Peavey Valveking 100 and it rocks as good as my Strat w/ Duncans and Dimarzios. The quality of the electronics is not sub par at all.  Must have been built on a Friday afternoon or something.--- NOW--after I did this it is sweet!!. I play through a Peavey Valveking 100 and it rocks as good as my Strat w/ Duncans and Dimarzios. The quality of the electronics is not sub par at all

 I like the neck pickup. I like the combination of the two, the nuts, not great tuners. They look a bit iffy and I'm not sure what will happen in the winter when it gets dry. Here in Finland we're in the middle of summer now and in the winter when it gets dry

Epiphone Les Paul Special (Cheap - But Worth It?)

Yes I'm intentionally avoiding the ropey nylon string we all had first and bust up with super heavy picks trying to rock it! (just me??? )

My first electric wasn't much better, in 1994 my Mum ordered  me an Encore Les Paul type pack from a catalogue (with an amp, strap and the infamous pitch pipe which noone I knew could even use 😂) 

The guitar looked nice in a very dark sunburst but it was terrible, the strings were stupidly heavy (back then the thought of changing strings on a new guitar just didn't happen with me)  the pickups and electrics were a bit crackly and intermittent and the neck felt like a cricket bat. I strummed away and learned about 3 clapton riffs, wild thing and burning love by Elvis as well as a ropey (and very wrong) version of smells like teen spirit. The whole experience was pretty dreadful BUT when I bought my next guitar which was a Squier affinity telecaster I felt as if i'd improved 1000% overnight.

I'd love to hear your success stories about a terrific first guitar or whether you had a nightmare experience like I did. (can't have been too bad, I started at 13 and am still mucking around with guitars at 40!)

[DISCUSSION] First Electric guitar stories.

 But it is an admirable knockoff of the Les Paul. It plays well and sounds well. My primary guitar is a Telecaster - but I always wanted a Les Paul. This is close enough for my purposes at this stage of life 

Incredible Value for a Very Decent Guitar

 Again like I said you've got a rosewood fingerboard, got a 12 inch radius fingerboard, pearloid dot markers. These have a 60s slim taper D neck. It's got a 42 millimetre plastic nut so for me with big hands it does get a bit awkward because it's quite flat being a slim D profile. You've got your classic epiphone headstock with just some generic style Chinese tuners

 I've kind of gone with the theme of my last headquarters so it's familiar but looks a bit different. So hopefully the lighting's good, the sound's good, at the minute it's a little bit echoey because I need to put some more furniture in. But anyway so while we're in here I thought I'd show you this Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 that I picked up. I got this off marketplace for 50 quid

 Yeah I'll give you a little up close and personal. Again I snagged this for 50 quid. 2015 model you can tell by the first two numbers on the back of the headstock there. So being the earlier model it's full mahogany body, mahogany neck

 You've got two humbucking pickups. You've got a tunamatic bridge stock tower piece. So you've just got a three-way selector switch which does have a nice solid feel to it with just a master volume tone control. Nice and simple

My Dads 80’s Yamaha FG 365 Sii acoustic that I’m finally getting around to learning at 37. I’m about a month in, can barely put it down and have been eyeing an Epiphone Les Paul classic already

Slow night at work so I want to hear about your first axe and how you got it.

When I was a kid/teenager, we had a big old acoustic that my mother got in the early '70s. I would try toying with it every five years or so, but given that 1) the strings were a mile off the fretboard, 2) they had never been changed, and 3) they might as well have been telephone wire, suffice it to say this was a dreadful experience each time that I was utterly befuddled by.

When I turned 27 I started getting some extra income and decided I wanted to celebrate by getting something I had always wanted. I also learned that electric guitar strings are lighter than acoustic strings, so I said screw it, I'm doing this and finally learning.

I did some research and decided on a red Yamaha Pacifica 012 in a starter pack, bought Rocksmith (and eventually a Fender Mustang 1 amp), and watched a bunch of tutorials on Youtube and Justinguitar until I started to figure chords out. I still play that Pacifica frequently despite having a whole stack of guitars now.

So, what's yours?

I love this guitar, I'm currently learning how to play guitar with Rocksmith 2014, although it doesn't sound as rich in tone as a more expensive guitar, it a LOT closer to a professional sound than your typical starter guitar. I've got about 40 hours on the guitar and I was surprised my hands haven't bled, but I did slowly build a resistance to it. Now I can play without any pain. Anyway, great guitar with the classic Les Paul look, and once you move on to something better you can hang this on the wall with pride as your first guitar
