We all have that instrument that just speaks to us, and we don't know why. We love it for some irrational emotional reason. But we don't own it... there's some reason we haven't done the work to buy this crazy thing we love despite all logic and good sense...

For me, it's the Warwick Dolphin. I'm not a Warwick guy... I have a couple of Fenders, Dingwalls, and some oddball instruments. I am TOTALLY HAPPY with my collection, and all the sounds I can make with my current horde of instruments. I do not need a new bass. Ever.

But, if someone came up to me on the street, handed me the Dolphin, and said "Give me $7000 and this is yours", I know I couldn't say no. I'd sell my left nut, right then and there. No question. I love this bass with all my heart and I have no idea why.

So. What is your "irrational love" bass?

what brand makes the best violin bass?

 It truly has more of that upright bass sound that characterizes this style of instrument. I'd certainly buy it again. It does have a tendency to be headstock heavy. If you take your hands off it while it is on a strap it tend to end up hanging with tuning keys down

Get an epiphone viola bass! It can do something similar to the hofner it looks similar to, plus much more! And it's a short scale. I love mine so much I'm thinking of getting a second one and yanking the frets out. Also they are cheap.

. or maybe Hofner is just clever to save on production costs. Either way, the tuners on the Epi are modern and functional, and work just as good as the ones on MIA instruments. They stay in tune very well - and that's not the case even with Paul's German made Hofner (as has been quoted in the Beatles Gear book), let alone the Indonesian replica

I would say both the Epi and the Hofner are equivalent in terms of the tailpieces they use. The bridges on these two instruments look almost identical to me

 The Hofner has a pickguard which the Epi doesn't, but I don't see a need for one. I play both with a pick and with my fingers, and no scratches so far. I never reach the wood with a pick, no matter how aggressively I play.  THE ELECTRONICS & TONE: Both instruments use 2 humbucker pickups

  THE NECK: The Epi wins hands down in quality of craftsmanship. You notice this mostly in how the neck feels in your hands, although just looking at the body and the frets makes the same impression. The Epi is made in China, and the Hofner is made in Indonesia - in my overall experience with the inexpensive Asian imports, Chinese instruments are a bit better in quality than Indonesian ones. Well, regardless of the country of origin, the Hofner I tried was very obviously inferior to the Epi

A better [affordable] Beatle bass

 Very very light but does have a bit of neck dive, not unbearable though. I think tone wise it’s very compatible with the style you want to play if you throw some flats on there.

Over the weekend I had a chance to play a hofner style guitar (the violin body) and it completely changed my perspective of bass. I've never liked how bulky and heavy most bass guitars are. And the violin body made it soooo much easier to switch over and start playing. I already play bass-ey riffs on guitar so I don't have a SHIT TON of work to do.. and I understand the fundamentals. The style my band plays is mostly Grateful Dead and we play other things from Zeppelin to Hendrix to Floyd and everything in-between. But mostly jammy kind of stuff. I guess my main question is can anyone suggest a bass that's in my price range (not looking to spend more than 500) and also satisfies my desire for quality and mobility?

Guitar player here. My band needs a Bass player. After searching for a while, turns out it's me. I need suggestions for an affordable and quality bass.

 I had been playing mostly Piedmont Blues & some old time, and was looking for something that would go with that, but still let me wander into Rock. I tried a bunch of solid bodies, and saw the Viola hanging in a corner. I was attracted by it's looks, but once I picked it up, I was blown away! It sounded crisp and clear, even with roundwounds, and was a lot lighter than it looked. The fit and finish was very impressive

Didn't love the Epiphone viola bass I had for a short time. Haven't spent enough time yet with the ebay Peavey Grind NTB 5 string that I picked up for $160 4 years ago. Every bass can sing a different song.

What brand do you guys think makes the best basses?

After 20+ years of eyeballing this (and similar) guitars, I finally broke down and bought myself this Epiphone for Christmas. In that time I've had a solid-body precision bass, which works just fine, but doesn't necessarily get the blood pumping the way that the Hofner-style does..

 It's rich and warm enough for the folksy/Beatles sound, but sounds just as good playing along with RHCP or Muse.  I noticed more fret buzz when I first started playing, but after putting in a fair number of hours, the fret buzz appears to have gone away; I suppose I'm adapting to the new feel of the shorter, slender neck. I didn't think it would be a total replacement of my other guitars, but for the past three months, I haven't touched any of my other guitars at all, and I'm noodling around on this one every day.  I wish I'd bought this guitar years ago!

 Plus, when I say 'all the weight', take it with a grain of salt; I don't actually know how it compares, weight-wise, to my other bass, but it feels really light.  I was encouraged to switch the round strings with flatwound, but I'm actually quite pleased with the tone as it is.
