 So I actually thought that this knife being this blade profile and this size would actually be a good primary knife for a lot of things out here, but I actually found that it's a little bit too tailored towards those finer tasks that it doesn't quite work for me. So if you're looking for a primary smaller knife, this may or may not be it, and I kind of hesitate to say that because that's kind of getting into my personal approach to how I do things, because depending on how you roll, this could very well cover everything that you need to do. It's going to get done a lot of the things around camp, and especially when you're crafting smaller items. This thing's going to be great because it lets you get in there and lock in and really work comfortably from that position

 It's not that this doesn't work, but when I have a full grip on it, I do feel, for my size hand anyway, I do feel this little spot a little lacking, there's a little bit of a gap there, so it kind of makes you want to hold it more this way. Now the knife is actually designed well to cater towards that grip, and so it is good, which that kind of a grip is good for any kind of food prepping, skinning, dressing animals, things like that, and then any kind of detail work, so if you're getting in and really working like making points and fish spears and traps and that kind of a thing where you're starting to do that detail work, which is kind of what you're using a smaller knife like this for, then it's fine, but it's when you start shifting into this grip that you feel the transfer of energy is a little less efficient, but it's very subtle, I'm just pointing it out because that's what I do, because I'm reviewing this knife. And again, this is a smaller knife, and so its purpose isn't to do that huge work, and so having a little bit of compromise there isn't too bad considering that you have such good control when you're doing what this knife is designed for, and that's those smaller, more detailed tasks. Another detail that I like about the JG3, even though it's a smaller knife, and it's kind of designed around doing those smaller tasks, it still has a little extra strength here

63 inches, the blade length itself is 3.5 inches, weight 4.5 ounces, it's a flat grind, and this is a 1095 high carbon steel blade, treated with a black oxide finish. But the spine is uncoated and there is a 90 degree spine on there

 So this is the sheath that the Essie JG3 comes with, just a simple leather sheath, good sturdy construction though, got a belt loop back here, pretty good retention, I haven't wet molded this, but I have used these sheaths before from Essie Knives and once you wet mold them, just like any leather sheath, they do hold the knife a little better and more of a custom fit. So I like this handle, there's a little more contour than a lot of the Essie Knives have, but it's kind of a unique contour in that it really seems to favor this kind of a grip. It's not that this doesn't work, but when I have a full grip on it, I do feel, for my size hand anyway, I do feel this little spot a little lacking, there's a little bit of a gap there, so it kind of makes you want to hold it more this way.  You can see this line that goes right here, so the flat grind on this blade is all this portion, but this is blade stock that kind of tapers out, so from here, right there where my finger's at, that's the full thickness, the.125 inches goes to here, and then it starts to taper out from here. Now what that does is it gives the blade just a little extra strength while still allowing it to have a nice flat grind that can slice and dice and all that good stuff. Just a small subtle feature in there, but it's something that I appreciate in this because you can get away with a narrow, slender blade but still have a good sturdy knife for some of those heavier tasks

In this knife review, I take a closer look at the JG3 by ESEE Knives. This knife was designed by James Gibson and is part of ESEE's Camplore series which represents some of their more camp and bushcraft focused knives.

As I always do during my review process, I put this knife to work in order to properly evaluate it. I didn’t, however, get the chance to do any field dressing with the knife, but due to the unique handle design and overall profile of the blade, I believe it would do quite well at this task (if you have used this knife for hunting and field dressing, please feel free to add a comment below). These same design features allowed it to do well with basic fire-side food prep, which I demonstrate in the video. The knife handled well with a wide variety of cutting tasks which I explored as I reviewed this knife, but I did have some personal concerns about the knife that I share in more detail in this video. As always, knives serve specific functions based on their design and the materials used, but there’s still room within all that for some personal preferences, and that’s always important to weigh in to which knives you carry.

 The handle is a tad small, but it’s not a deal-breaker. It’s not impossibly small, and I have hands (with large palms) big enough to fit in large gloves.

 Now I wanted to do a complete comparison. Video for you portion of in this review, but that would take an extra you know five or ten minutes, and then I would make this video 2530 minutes. I don't want to do that so the same day that I'm posting the review on the j g3. I will be doing a separate video just comparing these two knives and showing you the pros and cons of both of them to help you make a wise purchasing decision between these two and this portion

 The Jade excuse me the Azula I purchased for 68 dollars on Amazon and the jg3 app purchase for 105 on Amazon, so we're looking at almost an forty dollar difference and when I started thinking about it and what the j g3 offers versus the Azula is it Worth the extra almost forty dollars and when I really started thinking about it, I'm not sure I think the G g3 is a little bit overpriced, because we're looking at Marquardt ahima scales, 1095 high carbon steel. Now they did spend more time, contouring the handles on the g g3 than they did on the Azula. These are the you know. It'S just simple straight off the back, but they're the exact same material, micarta 1095, for both these blades

 This Aspen just died is good because it's pretty soft and it's not going to ship out on me and then I'm have to start again. So it's really good. Okay, so here's our ground spike, that's gon na go in the ground with its really nice notch there. So I'm gon na do the exact same thing

 I'M excited about everything else on this knife, but not the leather sheath, the weather's, just not my preference guys. I know there are many of you out there that love it. That'S awesome. I just don't like it because it tends to wear out over time now granted a lot of other materials will as well, but you know it holds water a lot and where I live in the Rocky Mountains I get rained on almost every afternoon during the summer Time and then the winter time I'm in snow, so this is picking up lots of moisture gon na hold the moisture on a 1095 bleed

As always, ESEE’s warranty merits a few words. If you run across something the JG3 can’t do (and break your blade in the process), the company will repair or replace it, no questions asked. Even if you’re someone like Advanced Knife Bro, who hammered this same tester through some pretty gnarly wood.

What can the JG3 not do? Not much, folks. I mean, you won’t be felling trees or hacking through the underbrush. But for day-to-day camp tasks, this is an excellent little blade.

 But you don’t want to be “that person,” the one who carries a 10-inch machete to barbeques and friendly camping trips. The ESEE JG3 is for you. It’s small enough to carry in mixed company without sacrificing competence and durability.

 From the subtle swoop of its blade to the gentle swell of its pommel, this knife is a pleasure to behold. Designer James Gibson has done an outstanding job here, hitting all the right notes with its outdoor aesthetic.
