I’ve read some reviews saying the artwork for “”Terraforming Mars”” is “bad” and even prevents some people from buying it despite admitting it is a great game. Personally I don’t mind the artwork of TM and I find the theme very engaging. When I compare it to other games in my collection I don’t see how TM is significantly any better or worse looking than most of them.

What are some of the best games in terms of artwork and aesthetics? What am I missing out on?

Maybe I don’t have a good eye for great artwork, or maybe I care much more about whether or not the game is fun to play. I do appreciate an engaging and aesthetically pleasing theme, so let me know what you guys think!

Games with the Best Artwork?

 The art is beautiful and the smaller components are very nice quality.  My only issue with the game is the design flaw of the tree. The tree is built in such a way that you can't really play with people all around the table. We have to bunch at one end to use it properly

One-Player Wednesday - (March 10, 2021)

 To play the cards you need to spend the resources you have collected but these cards are critical to winning as you are building up your little critter town with them. Most all the cards have victory points attached to them of varying degrees and usually do something special as well. Once you run out of workers to place and resources to spend to play cards, you then progress the season for yourself, which allows you to bring all your workers back and collect more workers to play during the next season.  Components /Gameboard–  The components in this game are really where it shines

 Also within the trunk of the tree is the massive card draw pile. It’s extremely thematic and adds a TON to the overall appeal of the game. This does create a kind of issue with seating though as everyone that plays have to sit on one side of the table. For me this was a bit of a hassle with 4 players as everyone was trying to build their own critter towns out and needs space

 Competitive  Length/Win Condition-  The game takes right about 2 hours with 2 players and around 2 and a half with 4. To win you must have the most victory points at the end of the game, which happens after everyone is finished with their last turns during the autumn season. You start the game at the tail end of winter during the beginning of spring. During this phase each player takes turns either placing a little worker on the board to collect a resource or playing a card

 I feel like they should have been grinded down on one side just to keep them from rolling all over the board when someone grabs some from the pile. Something else I will say is that the piles of the resources are a little messy. Now this is just a personal preference and I certainly won’t dock any stars for this but I think the game could really benefit from little storage cases for each resource on the board. I will probably look into this for myself

Expansions can add a lot to games, and most of the time the additions are wonderful. What's the game that changed so drastically that you wish you could easily go back to the original?

For me it's definitely Viticulture. Tuscany added some great concepts, but the game take SO MUCH LONGER to play with the expansion. On top of that, once you've mixed the elements, resetting to the base game can be an absolute pain.

What game do you hate the expansion for?

are the cards that have this special? ...how do you use this, do you use this, when would you use this?  Turns out, if you play the game the first time and discover that you've got a bunch of tiny chits you didn't use and a number of cards they fit on and you see other similar cards with those names, it'll click what they're for

 And, it wouldn't have taken much to explain "If you card shows this, and the thing it names is available, cover it with one of those, and take the card without paying the cost."  On the whole, Everdell is a very enjoyable and satisfying thematic game that offers strategy, construction, and engine building (over three phases) in such a way that there are extra considerations that make game play more fun.  Would highly recommend this for game nights and gifting.

  This last item is where the game really shines -- because you're effectively making a choice: More Workers or Linger for more scraps (because you don't have enough workers to get all the resources you need). In the latter case, you get more millage from your turn, but the other player is going to be able to grab the stuff you want. However, there's a balance, in that your workers remain parked in places they'd like to be visiting (so you can block them).  The game design in beautiful, it's colorful, it's got cute characters, and yes, there's a huge 3D cardboard tree as well

  The cons. Turns out the 3D tree is highly superficial (and it has to be disassembled for storage). It's only function is to hold extra workers and four tiny cards, as well as some reminder text. The tree itself also holds the draw deck, which can make it difficult to get to

What did you add to or removed from your shelf last month? (August, 2021)

 The pace moves quickly and crazy enough my 8 year old and 11 year old not only wanted to play but were able to strategize and play along in a game I was extremely certain was far above their ability (The publisher recommends 14+). That not only didn't stop my youngest players but it even captivated them for the 3 hours it took to complete the 4 player game.  I have only played this once, right out of the box and its an instant hit in our boardgaming families library. We talked about the game well after we finished and my wife and I are attempting to play again this evening in a 2 player game

A cornerstone for your gaming library

I got Everdell CE Saturday, and the Lost Expedition a few weeks ago. Played Everdell three times in a row Sunday and have been itching to play again since! The Lost Expedition is great for me because I can play alone and it takes little setup - very luck based, but still enjoy the challenge !

What did you add to or removed from your shelf last month? (June, 2021)

  The icing on the cake for all of this is that the theme, presentation, and artwork are a pure delight. There's just a magical "something" about the way the art captures the small details of the imagined premise of play that draws you in.  It's a bit pricy, but when you see the quality of construction and the art, combined with the engrossing gameplay, it's worth every penny and more.  If you have any interest at all in Euro-style board gaming, Everdell deserves---no, practically demands---space on your shelf
