 the the the the the the the the This is the Fender JMJ Road Worn Mustang and it is a short scale beauty that just sits so perfectly in a mix and just sounds so full so radiant and has a lot of versatility despite it only having one pickup a volume knob and a tone knob but this bass is just man it's a lot of fun so the JMJ signature Road Worn Mustang bass basically this is Justin Meldahl Johnson's signature Mustang bass now who exactly is Justin Meldahl Johnson you ask I don't know have you ever heard of M83 Mars Volta, Paramore, Nine Inch Nails, Air and countless other bands well over the years Justin has performed written and produced dozens of bands a lot of which you guarantee have heard and man he is just an absolute killer player and killer producer too so seeing him get his own signature bass is just super awesome in my opinion. Now the signature Mustang is specifically designed and spec'd to match that of a 67 Mustang bass now I'm no stranger to short scale basses I absolutely love them but man this one really is something special I don't know if it's just the playability the feel or just the overall vibe that this entire bass gives off but I absolutely fell in love with it when I started playing with it starting with the body you have Fender's classic Mustang styling which is just that offset that just looks a little weird but man it just holds its own in terms of style in my opinion you have an alder body in this beautiful faded Daphne blue and I honestly cannot get over this finish enough I remember when they first announced this bass I fell in love with it just because of the color scheme faded Daphne blue is such a gorgeous color and it really pops to me too especially because it doesn't have a really glossy finish at all it's much more of a matte finish that's because this is a road worn bass I know a lot of people don't really care for road worn basses because oh it's something that should be earned throughout the years but I like road worn basses I like the idea of it and of course you can always keep you know scratching it up and scuffing it up yourself too nothing's gonna stop you from doing that I just think it's really cool that they gave it both that faded Daphne blue color and they added the different road worn aspects to it now this is a really cool aspect I never really gave thought to when it comes to factory road worn finished guitars is that they're all different in their own ways and I just guess I never really thought about that but thanks to today's sponsor Sweetwater I was really able to see that thanks to Sweetwater's guitar gallery they upload pictures of the exact bass that you're gonna choose now you can choose between the different serial numbers and really see the difference in the bass now for a regular bass you might not see a big difference besides maybe weight with the regular finishes they're usually gonna be the same they might not of course be at 100% the same but when it comes to these road worn finishes I realized wow there's a really big difference between some of these whether it be the markings on the side of it or on the front of it but you can really see some of the dings are way more articulated in some of the basses compared to other ones but that's just one of the many cool things about Sweetwater is their guitar gallery and their 55-point inspection that every single guitar over $300 gets out the door and their incredible customer service as well another great product I picked up from Sweetwater as well is the third generation Scarlett 2i2 from Focusrite so you have the fantastic inputs the direct monitoring as well as headphone out too and it's now all USB-C too and of course it's under $200 I absolutely love this preamp the second generation held me well for years and now the third generation is gonna do the exact same thing and of course a big thank you to Sweetwater for sponsoring this video let's get right back into the specs and another thing I've never really paid attention to when it comes to road worn instruments is not only is the finish itself road worn but the actual hardware is too and I thought this was really cool that means the knobs the control plate the bridge even the thumb rest have its own little bit of characteristics added to it because of the road worn finish which I think is really cool you also have this age perloid pickguard that looks fantastic this one particularly you could see that it's yellowed a bit and I just mmm mmm it just adds that nice little extra bit of character to the overall vibe of the bass now besides the neck which we're about to get to I think the pickup might be the next star of this bass because I was super surprised at how full yet how versatile this pickup can really sound depending on the mix and your playing style too it's a custom Seymour Duncan split single coil pickup and really from looking at it you wouldn't really think that there's a lot to it but man again I was very surprised at how great and well rounded this pickup sounds now moving up you have a 30 inch scale maple neck with a nine and a half inch rosewood fretboard radius that is just oh I love this neck it's so easy just to just run up and down it as quick as possible it's so flawless and just feels so unique too it really does feel like an extension of your arm it's something where I didn't experience any lack or anything that just kept me from being able to just slide and move wherever I wanted to and because the bass comes with flats already on it it just feels that much more smooth and coherent you have medium jumbo frets that just feel super solid and then going up you have your synthetic bone nut that keeps in tune great and then of course the headstock which just rounds it all off it's that classic fender headstock that just looks fantastic and you have hip shot lollipop tuners as well this might actually be my first time experiencing lollipop tuners which I mean I guess it's just the look of them that's just kind of like off putting up first but it just adds to the overall vintage vibe of this bass and of course and most importantly they keep in tune perfectly So, overall with the Justin Meldahl Johnson Signature Fender Mustang Bass, I absolutely love it. The scales are just so much fun to me already, so having such a great feeling, fantastic playing and just phenomenally sounding instrument on top of that just makes it even better.  So the bass again is very simple, very straight ahead, you know, not a lot of pomp and circumstance, just bass. So let's play a little bass. This is going to be all the way up on the volume, all the way up on the tone, and then we'll roll that back and fro as needed. Here we go

 I won't do that again. I mean, short scales are fun, they are, you know, they appeal to everybody. Because otherwise, you know, 35 inch scale basses or 34s, sometimes a little bit too much for people. And so we get into these short scales and this sort of opens it up to everybody that wants to play

A BIg P Sound In A Classic Smaller Package!

 And I also failed to mention when I was describing it, this comes with flat wound strings on it, so awesome move for a short scale bass, if you own a short scale bass, try it out with flats, has a nice tendency to mellow out some of that kind of snappiness we get from the softer string, from the shorter scale length, heck if you have any bass out there and you've never played a flat wound string, try it out, you might dig it, but what you don't get out of it is like a real good slap tone, you could still do it, but you don't get that crisp top end, you get that real kind of muddy sort of tubby sound, it accentuates those frequencies with the flat wound string, but they feel really good on the hand, it's a nice kind of change of pace for you. And I also like the palm muting thing with the pick, it could sound really slick with it too, it gets that real kind of, this nice little top end kind of cut through with this technique and I'm not very good at it, like I'm never that good with the pick as you could just see, but check this out. Super cool sound, we'll do that just with a thumb, this might not come through your speakers really well, but we'll see. And we'll roll some tone back off of that, so we're gonna go down to about 50%, finger style, just normal finger style

 So Rosewood board, 9.5 degree radius, it's a C shaped neck, so not the modern C, it's a little bit fatter than a modern C but super comfortable and it's the modern P bass width at the nut, so that's I think 1.625 which is like 43 or 41.3 millimeters and the ultra hip lollipop tuners which I love the look of that, super vintagey and everything's kind of worn in in a real nice way, super comfortable bass and I would be remiss if I didn't mention this is a short scale bass, so it's 30 inches from bridge saddles to nut and again kind of a three-fold thing there, while this might be, it's coming around $1000, might be a price point above what a beginner wants to spend, anytime we see a short scale bass, great for a beginner, great for someone with small hands, great for a guitar player that wants to transition over to a short, I'm sorry, over to bass because it is shorter scale so you don't have to stretch as far and if you're you know a longtime veteran bass player or someone's been playing for any amount of time and you have some cool stuff in your collection which you don't have a short scale instrument, really nice addition because what you get out of this is a real nice mid-range punch, I actually find that this particular model to have the most of that character to it, as you heard me playing with a pick and I'll do that again, a lot of mid-range characters so it's gonna cut right through a mix, it's gonna sound really great on stage, it's gonna play very well with effects pedals as well, so a little more versatility than you might think and a little bit more sound than you might think out of a short scale instrument, so we'll kind of dig back in, I'm gonna put the pick down for a second and we'll play just finger style here, so everything wide open, so volume all the way up, tone all the way up

Fender Roadworn Mustang Bass Black - EMPIRE MUSIC

Tl;dr: I'm interested in a practice amp and would love some feedback on a few options that seem to keep coming up:

1. Yamah THR10II series 
2. Boss Katana-Air 
3. Blackstar ID:Core BEAM

Anyone have experience/recommendations here? At a high level, I'm looking for: 

1. Good tone (naturally!) that is easy to get. I'm not a gearhead. I do not need 100s upon 100s of customization options. So long as I can get blues, rock/metal, and basic clean tones, with some nice reverb/delay, I am good to go. 
2. Convenience of use: small size and wireless functionality. The ability to use with a looper for practice would be great 
3. Ideally under $500, but I have some flex in the budget 

As context, I would only be using this for practice, primarily in my home office. I live in a rowhouse and mostly practice after my wife goes to bed, so being able to sound good at a low volume is a premium. 

Playing along with backing tracks/songs/a looper pedal is also important. 

Nice, but not deal breakers: the idea of being able to have wireless functionality is very appealing--I have a small office and keeping cable clutter down would be useful. Not sure if the built in wireless features are more of an upsell, given that I can buy a separate receiver/transmitter. I'm also curious if people find portability useful. I know the Yamaha series has a few with rechargeable batteries, which may be useful when I pop over to a friend's to play. Back when I started playing (many years ago), battery powered was synonymous with poor quality. It seems like that has changed lately.

[QUESTION][GEAR] Practice amps: Yamah THR vs Boss Katana-Air vs Blackstar ID:Core

 Let's start up towards the headstock, hip shot lollipop tuners, proper hip shot tuners on this signature bass, 41.3 mil nut, going down onto a 9.5-inch radius Rosewood fretboard. Beautiful fretboard with 19 of Fender's finest frets

These things have so much punch, they're remarkable, especially with a little finger rest up here, the thumb rest, when you get your finger style playing on. One volume, one tone, classic Mustang bass style. The hardware is all nickel and chrome, so it's going to age lovely along with the nitrocellulose lacquer
