 But even though I don't need to, really, I'm probably going to buy a second Tao and retire the Fiio. To my surprise, the Tao is just a lot better in practical use than the uBTR and less of a quirky, why-won't-this-dang-thing-turn-off pain to deal with. Sorry, Fiio.

 If you want to use this thing to push headphones at bedtime / as a sleep timer, you definitely do not want the Fiio.  - Range is better on the Tao.  - Battery life is better on the Tao (not that the Fiio has a bad battery life by any means).  - Pairing, especially at the outset of ownership, is more foolproof and less fussy on the Tao

 (The Fiio's is still holding up 3 months in.)  Bottom line, I keep one unit (the Tao, usually) at my office desk and one (the Fiio, usually) on my bedside table right now. But even though I don't need to, really, I'm probably going to buy a second Tao and retire the Fiio. To my surprise, the Tao is just a lot better in practical use than the uBTR and less of a quirky, why-won't-this-dang-thing-turn-off pain to deal with

Some fatal flaws and some rough competition

 (returned) 3. $18 Bluetooth earphones purchased solved my wireless desire but sound quality was significantly lower than my high-end wired headphones. (kept as workout earphones)

 However, after a week of testing, my ears are a bit better trained. I notice a bit of background static/interference while this device is on and have since upgraded to the Radsone EarStudio ES100 for $100.  ------------------  GOAL: I was in the market for a Bluetooth device that could connect my earphones (Shure SE535) and headphones (Audio-Technica ATH-M50x) to my Google Pixel 2 and one that would also preserve the sound quality. The FiiO uBTR satisfies these needs at a great price

 (multiple versions broken) 2. Bluetooth MMCX (non-FiiO) replacement cable solved my wireless desire (for the Shure SE535) but sound quality significantly deteriorated (vs wired connection). (returned) 3. $18 Bluetooth earphones purchased solved my wireless desire but sound quality was significantly lower than my high-end wired headphones

Good solution to pair your favorite wired earphones / headphones to your smartphone!

Update: My original review is below this update. I should have used this device before writing the review. I do like how the device works, except for when the loud voice announces when the battery is low, but what bothers me is that the battery only lasts just under two hours for me. It is advertised to last substantially longer, but for me it predictably lasts just under two hours

 I really like a certain brand of ear buds so I was excited to see a reasonably priced option to allow this.

Difficult controls

Acceptable option for the price but don't bother using with your higher-end earphones

 The audio quality is reasonable, but not great. Battery indication over bluetooth is very clunky; it goes from 100% to 70%, then 50%, then just dead/off. Charging is quick. The LED status indicator is pretty much invisible in any kind of bright ambient light, and the power button has to be held for a long time to switch it on and off, so you really have to plug in your headphones first and listen for the tones to be sure if it's doing what you want

Works okay, but has some issues

 Build quality and reliability seem to be the drawbacks for me, but not dealbreakers. One of the volume buttons got stuck and I had to take it apart to fix it. Now the face plate has no adhesive and it falls off all the time. It also bugs out sometimes when I have my phone and receiver in separate pants pockets

Perfectly fine; can recommend. Not a premium experience.
