While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, different sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fires. This alarm makes use of both ionization and photoelectric sensors to offer the earliest possible warning regardless of the type of fire. Sometimes a fire can smolder for hours before erupting into flames. Photoelectric Sensing Technology is more sensitive than Ionization Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of smoldering fires, like those caused by cigarettes burning in couches or bedding. Other fires erupt into flames quickly, like kitchen grease fires or fires fueled by paper burning in a wastebasket.  Because I had "new" smoke detectors installed in my home and because the "Push to Test" feature worked, I could have been clueless for as long as 10 years that they were in fact inoperable units. The only reason I learned otherwise is because I nearly burned down my house using a vintage toaster (my bad) the second week after I moved in. I thought it was a fluke that neither of the Kidde smoke alarms went off since they were located in bedrooms (not the kitchen). But then I had a near miss a few weeks later when the damper (newly installed!) stuck closed on first use of my fireplace

 Further testing would reveal that even burning a paper towel with a lighter an inch away would not provoke the Kidde smoke detectors to sound an alarm.  The problem with forcing consumers to rely on 10-year safety devices that are built to cheap Chinese standards is that they can be defective for that long and consumers may not be the wiser because the longer they stay in place and the less attention they require — i.e. to change out batteries on daylight savings as is the usual practice with a conventional smoke detector — the more likely it is that consumers will miss the fact that A) their device is defective or B) 10 years has lapsed and the battery is dead

First Alert is the Safer Choice

 I would leave the current alarms where they are and simply place the new SA3210s elsewhere on the ceiling but 1) dear wife doesn't want more clutter on the ceiling and 2) the battery would still need to be changed as before which is the reason I went with the 10-year lithium model in the first place. My old hardwired smoke alarm went off at 4:15 AM 2 nights ago and I dutifully went down to the garage, got the longest ladder (6 foot) and carefully removed the detector from the ceiling (not easy: have to move a side dresser to get the ladder in position and then climb nearly to the top of the ladder, straddling the top and using the paint tray as a place for my other foot while making sure not to hit my head on the ceiling). Okay, I removed the battery and got the detector partially removed from the ceiling - it's still hanging by one wire (slight shock made me stop the process) and THEN found out the problem was a circuit was out - don't know why but electrician coming out on Monday. Why am I telling you all this? Well, I researched the hell out of various alarms and settled for the First Alert SA3210 Dual Sensor Smoke and Fire Alarm. The three alarms arrived today and I read the package insert and saw the following: WARNING! Do not install this Smoke Alarm over an existing electrical box

Apparently, if there is too large a hole from the previous hardwired alarm, a draft could occur which would interfere with the operation of the SA3210 unit

I have an elderly father that runs his space heater almost all of the time during the winter so I wanted an early warning in case of any problems (the heater has tip over protection, but clothing or bedding could accidentally fall on top of it).  At any rate, it remains to be seen how well it will function (and I don't want to have a fire to find out) but I'm counting on a brand name product functioning in an emergency

 I guess that they have to have it dim in order for the battery to last 10 years, but I think I would rather have a little brighter flash less often (the green flashes once per minute).  The unit was easy to install with the proper tools (a 3/16" drill and a phillips screwdriver). The base offers a selection of slot-type holes to choose from so you should be able to find something that works.  It seemed to be kind of pricey for a smoke detector, but if it works in an emergency to save lives and maybe property it will certainly be worth it plus the savings in yearly battery replacement does help to offset the cost

"Heartbeat" LED very hard to see, otherwise ok

I have a couple First Alert dual-sensor alarms that have been on the job for around 7 years. One of them started beeping like the battery was dead, which it wasn't, just partly used. But the unit had apparently reached its end-of-life timer, and would not reset with a fresh battery. I tried to buy the same model, but couldn't find it; apparently this is the upgrade

One of the things I really liked about the last First Alert units was the separate mounting plate, which you put on the wall, then you "screw on" the actual detector to the plate with one-quarter turn to lock it in place. This makes it very convenient for battery changes, testing, and cleaning

  Of course, when they "upgraded" the models, they had to change the mounting design. The new mounting plate is smaller, and the mounting tabs are different, so you can't just leave the old mounting plate on the wall and attach the new detector to it. And to top it off, the mounting holes in the new plate aren't in the same positions as the old plate. You can re-use one hole but have to drill a new one for the second screw

 It is in my kitchen and It went off while I was boiling eggs! That is a bit much. UPDATE 5/2022: after having this smoke alarm for about a year and a half, i am ready to toss it in the trash. Have tried new batteries and hair dryer cleaning and it will not stop chirping. Plan on trying canned air to clean it
