 Pressurized portafilters exist because of one fundamental truth: Great espresso requires a good grinder, and you can't really get around that. What pressurized portafilters try to do is give you the best espresso possible with incorrectly ground coffee, unevenly ground coffee. Costly ground coffee. It doesn't really matter, but either way, that's what they're trying to do

 I've had some very nice espresso out of this, and having a pressure gauge to work with is helpful. Having a proper basket is helpful and you could argue. Am I still reviewing the Flair Neo though? Is this now more like a Flare Classic? Have I bait and switched you with this review? But I really do see this being the evolution that a lot of people who buy a Neo will go on. I think initially they'll be happy with what they've got, but soon they'll want more

 I've only really found success in the kind of 15 gram range for lighter espresso roasts. so your attempt Puck would go in here. There's a little dispersion screen that sits on top. When you brew you have your brew chamber which will sit on top

 It's their entry level point into lever espresso making with a flare. And to achieve that price point, they've stripped out a few things. You don't get the fancy carrying case there's not lots of nice colors, you get either a kind of gray or a white unit, and it's just one color throughout. And they've made one other significant change to it as well

The Flair Neo

Having said that I have an upgraded Flair Neo with a Lido E which is similar in terms of price but the quality is on par with my local Starbucks or Blue Bottle Coffee so I think its pretty good for $300.

Espresso newbie, advice needed and appreciated.

Works decent, but I would not buy again. I can't wait to get a real espresso machine.  Pros: - Cheap entry to espresso - Makes tasty espresso - Portable  Cons: - Even with it dialed in, the pressure is unpredictable (the water wont pull through at all sometimes or comes out like a waterfall sometimes) - Cleaning time

Works decent, but I would not buy again.

if you can swing it i'd go for a flair neo ($120) or classic $150. it'll provide you a better quality of life, better espresso, and the ability to pull really good shots in the future if you get a good grinder.

Manual espresso maker?

 I could make a shot now without it, but it took a month of practice to get it down to how it should feel. There is a real learning curve to the whole process once you upgrade the portafilter.  I use the my upgraded Neo 2-3 times a day. I like it, but it is not something I use if I want a quick cup before work

 The pressure gauge is a necessity for a new user with the upgraded the portafilter. It is very easy to press too hard or lightly without it. I could make a shot now without it, but it took a month of practice to get it down to how it should feel. There is a real learning curve to the whole process once you upgrade the portafilter

 It's ok and easy enough to use, but the final product is more of what you would get from a moka pot or Aeropress. Within a month I ordered the regular portafilter and the pressure gauge, which gave me a nice shot of real espresso. The pressure gauge is a necessity for a new user with the upgraded the portafilter. It is very easy to press too hard or lightly without it

A good option, but wish I would have bought one of the higher end units

AMAZING Espresso Maker

There's a couple of options. You buy a grinder and a manual espresso maker like the Flair. Or something like a sage Bambino, or you go big and spend a butt load of money.

I'm a fairly big coffee person (likely nowhere close to the majority of this subreddit, however). I usually make my coffee using a Hario v 60 and have a number of local roasters that I like getting my coffee from. 

I've been watching a number of videos on youtube and have been considering getting into espresso etc... But there are so many options I'm not sure where to start. Mostly in terms of equipment. I currently use the Bodum BISTRO grinder for pour-overs and have no espresso machine otherwise. 

I know machines and grinders can be expensive and I'm open to investing a few thousand into the hobby. But I also don't want to jump right in and spend $3-4k on a grinder and espresso unless that's really the best way to go. Any thoughts?

How to get into espresso

  My normal espresso machine has to be sent in for service, and I wanted to have a high level espresso machine to use on the road with our camper van. The Flair + a hand grinder seemed like the perfect solution. This being the cheapest model in the Flair lineup, I was interested to see how it would stack up to the higher end models that I have seen reviewed.  Upon opening the box, the first thing I could tell is that this is a high quality unit

 Overall, the Neo -- with the optional bottomless portafilter -- is a good value and seems to offer the same quality as in the higher end models, and since the components are the same, obviously the espresso pulled will be of equivalent quality.  UPDATE: After a little while with this Neo I quickly realized I wanted the Pro 2 version. The main reason was because the Neo can't accommodate the pro's group head (available separately), which was only apparent to me after purchase. The capacity of the Neo is a bit small, and the shape of the basket combined with the bottomless filter makes it difficult to avoid a bit of a sideways splattering mess

  The plunger for the group head mechanism is made of high-grade plastic. For me, this is probably the biggest disadvantage, as I would prefer 100% stainless. However, the good news is that in the future, if I purchase the pressure gauge, it includes a stainless plunger. This plunger makes contact with the hot water, although it does not directly contact the coffee

 The Neo is wonderful, but the pro has truly blown my mind and was well worth the upgrade. After a little bit of a learning curve, I'm now pulling shots consistently better or at least on par with what I often get at the very best third-wave espresso bars.

First impressions - higher quality than expected

For $200, I would recommend the Flair Neo, you can start with it as just stock, it will make thin passable espresso with preground beans because it has a pressurized portafilter. For cream, try a nanofoamer.

I am obsessed with drinking just espresso and cream, it’s just not the same with other forms of coffee!

So I’m spending wayyy too much money just buying shots of espresso from literally anywhere with an espresso machine.

I’d rather keep the price down but I want something that’ll last and make good espresso!

How can I make my own and start saving some money??
