Fujitsu Quaderno Gen 2

If the person is reading almost exclusively in one location, then I’d say get them a 13.3” one since it is closest to A4 size. No need to pinch and zoom which is not the best on Eink devices. Your main options here will be the Fujitsu Quaderno A4 Gen 2, or the Boox Max Lumi 2 (there is also the Quirklogic one but I haven’t looked into it). Both of these use the new Carta screen with improved contrast.

The Quaderno gen 2 devices look good but are too expensive. Gen 1 are good prices but you have to charge the pens up (I hate that about the iPad, battery is always flat when I feel inspired) and I've read that the displays have grid effect that can be off-putting. Am trying to avoid another Boox as I don't like their attitude to GPL and already feel a bit bad about supporting them with the 1 I have, 2 would be too far.

But they’re totally fine used at a desk. If you don’t need all the other features the Boox Max has and you want a little more portability, the Quaderno Gen 2 is also worth considering in the 13.3 inch class.

If just ereader then Fujistu Quaderno (my fav because of the non-glass screen), or Remarkable 2 or Papyr are very good options. If looking for to load your other apps then Boox devices are the best for that. I was in similar situation and after watching reviews for weeks and got myself a Fujistu Quaderno Gen 2 10 inch and loving it so far.

The Quaderno A4 Gen 2 is better for me because it is so much more delightful to carry and hold. Quaderno is 368 g (13 oz) versus Lumi 570 g (20.1 oz). Lumi is 54% heavier. I use the Quaderno for 99% of all my reading/writing/notes now.

If you don’t need a frontlight and your textbooks are all PDF the Fujitsu Quaderno gen 2 seem to be quite popular options. A little bit trickier to get than Boox devices but they are simpler, and lighter weight.

I recommend taking a look at the Fujitsu Quaderno Gen 2. It's a focused document review and note-taking device. You can print websites directly to the device, even wirelessly, and it supports book marking on the device (you just draw a star on the page and it's bookmarked, and it supports different types of stars so you can have different types of bookmarks). It also has some really nice features for long document review, such as being able to search by pages that have handwriting on them.

For academic use, I like the Fujitsu Quaderno Gen 2, which is the successor to the Sony DPT-RP1. One advantage of the Quaderno Gen 2 is excellent contrast due to a lack of frontlight layer (compare here: ), a glare situation that is basically as good as e-ink gets, as well as a very natural writing feel. As long as you can store your Mendeley documents in a folder somewhere on your local computer, they can be synced bidirectionally to the device. (I don't use Mendeley, but this is trivial with Zotero (zotfile).

The Quaderno Gen 2 in A5 and A4 are the only devices I use daily. They are the lightest devices on the market with the new generation DPT screen. There are software limits and you will not get all the advanced features of the other devices. But it is rock solid at what it does and never fails me.

I'd suggest considering the Fujitsu Quaderno Gen 2. One of the best things about this device is that the native file format for notetaking is PDF. (Not PDF+sidecar file with export like the Remarkable or an Android app format that can be exported to PDF like a lot of e-ink devices... I mean literally PDF.)
