 Garmin did the opposite, adding marginal features that make bike riding less enjoyable than it should be.  Edit: I found that the course recalculation can be disabled. This significantly improves the behavior of the GPS when I leave the GPX route, or when I ride a route backwards. It's still not breadcrumb mode I still can't zoom and pan the map

 I don't need to pair the GPS with my phone, or send a message when I fall, or send pre-formatted messages to others who may be riding with me. These features have nothing to do with navigation, and don’t help one enjoy the discovery an unfamiliar and interesting part of the countryside.  I give the Edge Explore 5 stars for hardware. Garmin had to make some compromises with designing the Edge Explore, but overall they chose their options wisely

Garmin GPS units for outdoor use from years ago were expensive and bulky, heavy, ugly, and had lousy displays. One paid several hundred dollars for the unit, then another hundred for the road maps, which did not include updates. The screen was a "trasflective" LCD with a plastic cover. Resolution was poor, colors were washed out, one had to use a screen protector to protect the screen from scratches

I'm getting back into bike touring after being away from it for a long time. I'd like to get a bike computer - both for touring and for indoor training. I know there are ways to use my smart phone or this but I'd prefer to have a dedicated device. What computer are using, or would you recommend, and why?

Which Bike Computer do you use? And Why?

 Garmin could markedly improve the unit with firmware updates, which I hope are on the roadmap. On a scale of 1-5, I'm giving it 3 score -- good to have, could be better.  Pros: Absolutely love having a GPS/speedo/tracker at this price point, with smartphone syncing, weather resistance, battery life for all day rides. The features on the unit align with my general riding for touring, general cycling, commuting

  This is an initial review 2 weeks after purchase. I bought this to replace using my phone as my primary GPS screen. My phone battery would die too quickly and be way to sensitive to sweat or moisture. This Garmin totally takes care of those 2 things

 It doesn't recognize when you're 10feet from your course if you missed a block and wants you to turn around to your original missed point. I'll opt for a different computer next time. Mediocre battery life

Long-time lurker here, but I spend a lot of time on this sub dreaming about cycling from the UK to China (one day!). Done a fair few small bike tours, and I'm looking for a navigation option for the tours I've got planned for this year. Based in the UK.  


I've done trips following paper maps, or only following my nose with the NCN signs ([https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network](https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network)), or using my phone with Komoot / GoogleMaps etc., or a combination of all the above.  


Basically, all of the above have drawbacks, and whilst I know phones are pretty much the best option, my phone is old and the battery SUCKS, and I hate the anxiety of trying to preserve as much charge as possible, or faffing around having to stop and turn it on, work out where I am, and turn it off again. My first trip with the phone I had Komoot running in airplane mode, with the screen asleep and only flashing up when a turn was coming, and it lasted 2 hours...  


Paper maps cost a fortune, as you have to buy loads of them to cover the whole area of my tours in a small enough scale, and the NCN signs... well, they don't go everywhere, and sometimes they lead you down some bat-shit crazy routes, if they are even sign-posted.  


A dedicated device seems the best option - I only need it for navigation pretty much, and I don't want to have to worry about the battery life as much. Happy to take a few power banks with me. Looking at week-long tours and wild camping, so no guarantee of a plug socket over night.  


Done a lot of research on here and the internet at large and basically I'm stuck between a Bolt V2 or a Garmin 530, or blowing shit loads on a Garmin 1030. Open to recommendations, and would appreciate any insight!

GPS device analysis paralysis - tell me what to buy!

 On the save 4 hour ride I lost 20% of the battery instead of 40-50%. So much better and still usable. Still not great. I'd like to see about 16 hours of reliable battery time

 I bought this to take along on longer tours so need something more reliable. Returning.  Update to review: May be useful to others regarding screen freezing. I contacted customer service about this via chat

 So still torn. Looking closely at the Wahoo Roam but its more expensive.  Also regarding battery life. Been playing with power save mode

My goal is to cycle from Germany to the North Cape which means there will be at least some parts where there is not much around me. A worry of mine is that my phone which I am using for navigation and communication could break in some way. I have looked at a few back-up solutions like the Garmin inReach products but they are pretty expensive. Another option which would only help with navigation would be to buy paper maps. I haven't done a lot of routing on real maps yet but maybe some of you have used them in the past and could tell me a bit about the experience.

So, how do you deal with that phone issue? Do you just accept the risk or do you have any other solutions for the communication / navigation setup?

Alternative solutions for phones as sole navigation and communication device

 Twice, I've had to open Waze on my phone to bail myself out of dangerous situations. Just like all GPS devices the Garmin Edge lacks the human element of common sense that could help a rider plan a safer journey. I haven't decided whether I will keep this or not because the benefits are close to outweighing any advantages of using it for my rides.

 And when you least expect it, the device will have you turn onto a heavily trafficked road, again without bike lanes or sidewalks. Then you are left trying to find a safe passage out as speeding cars are whizzing by. Twice, I've had to open Waze on my phone to bail myself out of dangerous situations.
