The Apple Watch activity feature is like

You haven't mentioned a budget. Triathlon watches I would buy in ascending price order (even the cheapest does everything you mentioned and more):

1. Coros Pace 2 - comfortably the best value triathlon watch on the market, also the lightest and with incredible battery life. Newer manufacturer, and lacking the refinement of the established brands.
2. Garmin Forerunner 935. This is an older watch but still available to buy new. It lacks some of the more up-to-date functions like contactless payment, but it was top of the range when it was released.
2. Garmin Forerunner 745. A very recent watch with most of the bells and whistles.
3. Garmin Forerunner 945 or Fenix 6. I have lumped these premium watches together. They are the same watch under the hood. The 945 is lighter, the Fenix 6 has a more premium casing, so it depends on your priorities.

Prices go from £175 to about £500 (I'm in the UK).

I just got my Coros Pace 2 and I love it. I switched from an Apple watch after it just started failing. For the price, I don't think there is a better watch.

945 is a great (multi-)sports watch. Light and comfortable during sports, but looks basic and like a sportswatch.

My girlfriend has a Forerunner 245 and although it's way cheaper it still has most of the important features. So that is definitely a affordable alternative.

I have the Suunto 9 which is a pretty good alternative to Garmin in my opinion. The battery lasts forever, it's waterproof, it has a triathlon exercise type, and it syncs easily with Strava which I think were all your requirements

Sorry for high jacking this post (as I’m in a similar position to OP), but I wondered are Garmin’s cheaper in the US vs UK and are they fully compatible?
I’m UK based but heading to the US for Xmas and will hold out and buy one stateside if both compatible and significantly cheaper.

Garmin Forerunner 745, cheaper than the 945 has all the same features minus golf tracking and topographical maps. Solid watch for training, everyday use, races etc.

Hi all!  I'm looking into getting my husband a new smart watch for Christmas and was looking for some recommendations.  He did a 70.3 last year and I think is hoping to do another one some time so I'd like something that's good for all 3 events but also a good "wear all day" watch.  He has an Android phone so I can't get him an Apple Watch.  He currently uses the Fitbit Versa for everyday use and doesn't have a running/GPS watch.  He just uses his phone to track runs and bikes.  I'd prefer something that doesn't require a data plan because he'll still take his phone with him on workouts but I want him to have the convenience of tracking workouts on his wrist (so a watch that has either Map My Run or Strava app).  I also want one that's water proof for swimming.  Thanks in advance!

Smart Watch

First, yes it is a real Fenix 5X. I love the way it looks and it is a monster of information to provide you on your workouts.  What they don't tell you is that it might come from a different region; for instance the Garmin they sent me was an Asian region watch so I didn't have any US Maps preloaded like I thought I would.

Important Information Before You Buy!!

I also banged my Fenix 5X countless times on rocks, walls,.... and it didn't get a single scratch! After 3 years it looks almost brand new and that's why I like it so much. Garmin watches sure can be expensive, but once you own one you see that you paid for that build quality and that it was worth every penny.

Well I can't say that to the vivoactive 4s, after 3 month the screen has already a huge scratch. Feels like soft plastic Glas to me. Pretty disappointing.

Anyone questioning the toughness of the fenix range, my enduro has taken absolute abuse and still works a dream. The screen only had one tiny scratch. Would have been through 8 fitbits by now.

 I turn OFF the wrist heart-rate monitor while not climbing during long activities to: a) Reduce Battery drain from illuminated wrist LEDs. b) Not track low effort heart-rate activities during long hikes in/out of climb.  2. ALTIMETER and Ascent/Descent metrics had accuracy issues out-of-the-box, especially in mountain terrain

 See the TIPS section at the end of this review for ways to improve the accuracy of these metrics.  ---------- BACKGROUND ---------- This is the fifth Garmin wearable device I've used (my first 3 were FR610s, my forth F5, and fifth F5S). I was originally going to purchase a Fenix 5 (F5) when someone who was having accuracy issues asked me if I would like to try it out. While I liked the F5, my thinking evolved as follows: 1) I noticed May-June F5 devices had un-explainable Altimeter accuracy issues

  Another pleasant surprise was Garmin Connect IQ (which is the Garmin app store). Connect IQ includes many useful additional apps, widgets, watch-faces. For example, there's a Weather Underground widget that lets your obtain localized Temperature, Wind, Humidity, Precipitation for the closest WU weather station near you. The WU Weather widget is especially useful for those of you who adventure in remote areas, since the standard Weather Connect IQ app from Garmin only provides weather information for major cities (which is not useful in mountain wilderness areas)

  I quickly learned how to customize the display of altimeter, elapsed time, distance, lap, heart-rate, sunrise-sunset, moon rise/set/phase, and GPS info. These are all useful features for mountain wilderness climbing activity. Out of the box these watches allow customization of up to 4 fields per screen. For example, for hiking in mountainous terrain I setup one screen with: Elapsed Time, Distance, Elevation, and Heart-Rate

Hike/Climb Altimeter Accuracy update

 HR: Running - ok, similar results to Vivoactive Intervals - Vivoactive catches up ~10 seconds after the 30second sprint completed. then stays in sync. Fenix - never goes above 130 BPM. Occasionally after the interval it goes to 110 and stops there

6miles. Battery life: Charge both at the same time. Wore both constantly. Al activities started at the same time

  Now, Fenix 5 has some cool metrics, taken during activities, but question is if they are precise at all, given that the HR and GPS readings are not.

 When Vivoactive died after 7 days of use with half an hour of GPS, Fenix still had 13% of battery. So would last an additional day or 2, not much of improvement. HR: Running - ok, similar results to Vivoactive Intervals - Vivoactive catches up ~10 seconds after the 30second sprint completed. then stays in sync

Sadly, Downgrade from Vivoactive HR

 Received the HRM Tri and Swim straps two weeks ago. Wanted to test things out before posting any comments. The HRM straps themselves are excellent, I use the Swim strap in a pool 3 times a week, the Tri I use for running and cycling. Both are very comfortable to fit the purpose of long runs or swim sessions

 Restart is fast but does delete last 4 hours of HR data. *Error in software sync pushes your morning alarms from app to watch but not vice versa. This means the alarms you configure on the watch get deleted upon sync with Connect app. Sure this will get a fix, is a bit annoying nevertheless (using iOS)

Once you get your first access to the extended data such as Running Dynamics and swimming Swolf, you'll be amazed
