I bought the Garmin Fenix 6 last year about 9 months ago I reckon. What it did for me was quantify my training into something I could track better than any app I already had because now I have heartbeat data. Watching myself improve over the last 9 months gradually with numbers getting better was such a boon to keeping me motivated. Also knowing what HR zone I was in really took away any anxiety I had when I was less in shape

I kind of want a GPS watch like a Garmin Instinct Solar, but I’m not sure I can justify the price. For those of you who use one for backpacking trips and thru hikes, what do you like about it? Why should I get one?

For those of you who wear a fancy watch, what are the benefits?

 Hopefully at some point I step up my game to a point that I'll use all the features and I do hope that with firmware updates the vibration and heart rate tracking become a little more consistent.

 This happens often enough to be concerning, especially considering how much I paid for the device. Another complaint I have is whilek try to use the breathing app, I constantly am missing vibrations for my breathing timer because the vibration just isn't strong enough. I'd I want to use it effectively I have to actually watch my watch face to tell me when to breath, hold breath, etc, kind of defeating the whole purpose of the exercise which is to focus on breathing. Again, this wouldn't be that concerning if I hadn't spent so much money on this

When I purchased this device it was with the understanding that the premium price that I was paying was for THE smart/activity tracking experience to end all experiences. On cheaper devices these inconsistencies would be overlooked but at this price point it's unacceptable

  I do love the device even with my several concerns and don't have buyer's remorse per se, but I definitely could have opted for a cheaper device given what I need it for. Just make sure you really need this and check out their other devices before jumping on this one. Only Buy if You Really Need All the Options

My partner is getting into scuba diving, only small dives at this stage.
So, I was thinking of getting her something for her birthday that she can use while diving. 

I have a budget of around $400 and I've seen some Casio watches that have a water resistant of up to 200m.

I know Casio have a good reputation for being pretty durable, and I know that water resistance doesn't equal water proof. So, was wondering if the Casio 200m water resistant watches are suitable for recreational diving?

Appreciate any help.

Dive Watch

 I really dislike carrying my phone everywhere, so this was a must. While other Garmin models also offer this feature, what made me buy the Fenix was battery life, button control (I dislike touch screens on watches) and the solid feel of the watch. Not to mention the default watch face is gorgeous. I also like the ability to customize power modes or to put it into power saving mode very quickly

You haven't mentioned a budget. Triathlon watches I would buy in ascending price order (even the cheapest does everything you mentioned and more):

1. Coros Pace 2 - comfortably the best value triathlon watch on the market, also the lightest and with incredible battery life. Newer manufacturer, and lacking the refinement of the established brands.
2. Garmin Forerunner 935. This is an older watch but still available to buy new. It lacks some of the more up-to-date functions like contactless payment, but it was top of the range when it was released.
2. Garmin Forerunner 745. A very recent watch with most of the bells and whistles.
3. Garmin Forerunner 945 or Fenix 6. I have lumped these premium watches together. They are the same watch under the hood. The 945 is lighter, the Fenix 6 has a more premium casing, so it depends on your priorities.

Prices go from £175 to about £500 (I'm in the UK).

I just got my Coros Pace 2 and I love it. I switched from an Apple watch after it just started failing. For the price, I don't think there is a better watch.

I have the Suunto 9 which is a pretty good alternative to Garmin in my opinion. The battery lasts forever, it's waterproof, it has a triathlon exercise type, and it syncs easily with Strava which I think were all your requirements

Sorry for high jacking this post (as I’m in a similar position to OP), but I wondered are Garmin’s cheaper in the US vs UK and are they fully compatible?
I’m UK based but heading to the US for Xmas and will hold out and buy one stateside if both compatible and significantly cheaper.

Garmin Forerunner 745, cheaper than the 945 has all the same features minus golf tracking and topographical maps. Solid watch for training, everyday use, races etc.

Hi all!  I'm looking into getting my husband a new smart watch for Christmas and was looking for some recommendations.  He did a 70.3 last year and I think is hoping to do another one some time so I'd like something that's good for all 3 events but also a good "wear all day" watch.  He has an Android phone so I can't get him an Apple Watch.  He currently uses the Fitbit Versa for everyday use and doesn't have a running/GPS watch.  He just uses his phone to track runs and bikes.  I'd prefer something that doesn't require a data plan because he'll still take his phone with him on workouts but I want him to have the convenience of tracking workouts on his wrist (so a watch that has either Map My Run or Strava app).  I also want one that's water proof for swimming.  Thanks in advance!

Smart Watch

 In short, so you don't have to read everything else I posted her, it straight up sucks when compared to the apple watch 4 or 5. This watch cannot accurately display your HR when ascending hills on a walk. On a hike, they finally got something to register. Up until the last update, it would never crack 89bpm

 I thought I'd use the maps feature more and I do find it incredibly useful, but because I train the way I do, having solid HR tracking is more important to me than the map features which I could probably find a solution for via my phone. I train everyday with lifting, running, cycling, swimming or some variation of HIIT training. Keep track of the HR data is a great way to see how my fitness is progressing. Don't waste your money on this unless you don't care about HR data

 It only works on steady state indoor rides and runs that are also steady state or tempo. I contacted Garmin twice, and to their credit, after pushing a little bit on the second call, they sent me a second Fenix 6 because they thought the sensor was broken. It was not. The hiking app on the 6x pro sapphire will not produce an accurate HR reading

Coming from Fenix 5X & Apple Watch Series 4, I'm disappointed with heart rate accuracy.

I recently purchased the Garmin Fenix 6 pro solar. I was an avid Fitbit fan, but they have nothing on Garmin. I thought the Fitbit app was better until I tried Garmin and was really impressed.

I've been on the fence about taking the plunge and buying a Garmin.  I'd imagine I'd benefit most from being able to accurately view my pace to find my sweet spot.  How about you guys that use a watch, worth it?

Running watch - Game Changer?

Not worth the premium price

I have yet to have that type of problem with my Garmin fenix 6. I have only owned iphones since the very first iphone so I'm a big fan of apple products, but the Garmin is a superior product when it comes to fitness IMO. It lets me focus on my workouts, and also provides me with a lot of statistics that I can use to improve.

I've used alot of smart watches and fitness watches. Can honestly say Garmin are my favourite.  Be it wear os or apple I like all the smart features they have that I only use from time to time but the Garmins do everything I need and I don't have to charge them everyday.   Which Garmin are you thinking of?

I did a few weeks ago, Apple Watch Series 3 to Garmin Vivoactive 4s, and I’m undecided if it was a good decision. The battery life is amazing, it still surprises me not having to take it off at night to charge it, and run stats are so much better. But the heart rate doesn’t seem as accurate so I’m having to wear a chest strap during workout, and the step counting isn’t accurate for me either. It doesn’t count them while pushing a pushchair and doesn’t seem to count anything unless I walk for a minute or so, I’ve gone from 10k steps to 3k now.

I went from a Vivoactive 3 to an Apple Watch series 3. I'm predominately a swimmer but at the time, the pools were locked down. The Apple watch was pretty cheap, under $200 at the time and I liked it at first. But as the pools opened up, I was really disappointed in the Apple's swim tracking. I tried the swim.com app and it gave me the data I wanted and I could track the laps on each interval but it also required using the touch screen in the water which didn't work well. There's a reason Apple has the screen lock. It also miscounted a lot. I began wearing my old Vivoactive 3 for my swimming workouts again. I bought a Fenix 6 Pro in December and I love it. I get all the swim data I need and more. I've been using it hiking some this summer and the maps are great.

I knew the Apple had crappy battery life going in so I can't really complain too much. It needs a charge every night. But if you hike or take really long bicycle rides, you won't get more than a half day out of an Apple watch. My Fenix still showed 4 days of life after my 10 hour hike last week using the maps and gps all day. I gave my Apple watch to one of my daughters. It's a really good smartwatch but as a workout tracker, it's mediocre at best.
