The 910xt was great in its day, but it's a ten-year-old watch.

I'd suggest a 735xt or a Polar V800. 

You can pick up a 735xt fairly cheaply, although it is the newest and most expensive of the 3. It looks nicer than the 910xt and apart from the barometric altimeter and slightly shorter battery life it's an upgrade in every way.

The Polar V800 is another option. It's significantly cheaper than the 735xt and has the barometer. It's 3 years younger than the 910xt, well engineered with a couple more features, and to my eye is a better-looking watch. I only replaced mine when it died due to physical damage that impaired its waterproofing, otherwise I would still be wearing it.

Either of these alternatives does phone notifications if you wanted to wear it as an all-day watch. Personally I wear mine all day, as I don't want to have to find my watch before every workout, I like the statistics it provides and it's nice to be able to keep my phone in my pocket.

I’m looking for the best USED tri watch for beginners. The Honda Civic of watches, if you will. Like, what was your favorite watch before you upgraded to your current one? I’m looking at getting a Garmin 910 off FB Marketplace.

The Honda Civic of used watches

 Great! But to get daily step counts to sync, you either have to open the app or use the Sync feature on the phone. This is not a huge deal if you only use the app itself, but I have a third party service that syncs daily step counts from Garmin Connect, so at the end of the day I need to make sure I force a sync. It would be nice to have the watch auto-sync periodically when in range of my phone.  Also, in swimming mode, I like to time certain distances (250m, 750m and 1500m)

 It is nice to be able to go out without having to carry my phone to get my routes plotted during workouts. And I love the ability to overlay pace and heart rate on the map.  The Garmin Connect app is quite good. It has a few UI idiosyncrasies, but overall it's one of the better ones I've used

 It keeps track of personal records for my swims (and I assume it will do the same with bike rides once I start riding), although for some reason it does refuse to capture some records, such as Longest Swim and 1000m. I haven't figured that out yet.  I do wish that there was an interface to the MapMyFitness set of apps which is where most of my fitness history lies, so basically I am transitioning away from that platform and to Garmin Connect and Strava.  A few things I would like to see improved:  First, the watch can be set to auto-sync after an activity is completed and within WiFi range

I use a Garmin Forerunner 935 watch. This watch paired with either the running pod of one of the Garmin chest straps has allowed me to measure my cadence which I worked to increase from the 160’s up to around 175 to 185 depending on what pace I’m going.

What is the one item you bought that tremendously improved the quality of your runs?

 It tells you how you’re training - your pace, your distance, your cadence, your heart rate, VO2, and even if you’re overtraining...everything you need to know to understand how to make minor adjustments

  I started training by using the Google WearOS watch I already had. It, theoretically, could do what I needed it to do since you can download apps for just about anything. But there were problems.  Each app you download makes the watch even slower to respond than it normally was

My best purchase this year by far

I've had my garmin forerunner 935 since the end of 2017. It's been a great watch until this year. It constantly freezes up on me during workouts (super frustrating when I'm making an effort at a segment). I use the stopwatch for work (chemistry lab) and it freezes up every single day

  All wrist-based optical heart rate sensors struggle to maintain accuracy when the wrist moves or flexes. They will never equal the near perfect performance of a chest strap. However, after trying several watches with optical heart rate, the 935 is the best for me, averaging around 95% accuracy when compared to a chest strap. Keep in mind, your results may vary, depending on your skin type and where you position the watch

As a personal trainer, I have used more than a dozen fitness watches from Garmin, TomTom, Suunto, Fitbit, Polar, Timex and Mio. The best budget-priced watch with optical heart rate is still the TomTom Cardio Spark 3 (under $200 with music and bluetooth headphones), but if you want sheer power and features, with a ridiculously long battery life, the Garmin Forerunner 935 is the hands down winner. It has virtually all the features of the Garmin Fenix 5 HR, but in a lighter, smaller package. If you mostly walk for exercise, with an occasional run, the 935 is overkill

Garmin 935: Power, Ease of Use, Loads of Data, and the best Battery Life in its Class

Started with Samsung watch now have a FR745, at the start I missed it in only certain aspects (abit quicker to hit options) over it now.  Very happy with my decision

I also have a Vivoactive 3, but not the music version.  Upgraded from a forerunner 230; which I still have. Which I’m wearing now, since I’m waiting for a replacement cable for my Vivoactive.

As others have  mentioned, you will get used to it; but as a smart watch I prefer a touchscreen. Using buttons for smart watch functions, seems like a step backwards.

When jogging, I can do either. I never found the touchscreen to be a problem when I’m jogging; even in the most humid weather.

I really want to upgrade my Garmin to a forerunner but I really don't want to give up the touchscreen. 

Has anyone else had this concern? I currently have a VA3m and really like it, I got it over two years ago and have had very little issues with it. I got it as I wanted to start running, two years on I want more metrics and would love to get the FR945 but I'm just not sure I'll like having buttons instead of the touch screen. 

If only the 945 had both options! I'd be interested to hear everyone's comments.

Anyone else had experience of giving up touch screen?

 The wrist-based heart rate monitor works well on my wrist when the strap is tight; any looseness and it becomes unreliable. Occasionally the heart rate shows higher than actual for the first three minutes, but then settles on the actual rate for the rest of the run. I have run the same course at the same pace both with and without the chest strap and the heart rates agree very closely. The GPS locks on to the satellites quickly, taking between 2 and 10 seconds – usually less than 4 seconds

 Better still, it could simply freeze the current display for ten seconds so you can review whatever metrics you already had selected. 3) The current pace appears to be an average over the last minute or so. I would rather this be over the last 10 seconds, or better still, configurable like Garmin’s bike computers. I purchased a screen protector and consider it essential; a watch this costly should come with one

Accurate but costly

Spend the money and get a Garmin 935 /945 Forerunner or Fenix 6. The battery life alone is worth every penny.

I currently have an iWatch 5 series. I mainly use Strava which is works fine for running and riding, however has no option for indoor swimming. Would like to switch to something else so I don’t have to manually upload to my Strava account. Looking for recommendations. Thanks everyone!

Recommendations for a training watch

 Downloadable and customizable watch faces and widgets make this even more fun and impressive. Auto-uploading works like a champ, no more heading to the computer to plug in the ANT stick after a workout; it auto-uploads activities through my phone using Garmin Connect, and also connects directly to my home wi-fi if my phone is off. Also a useful coach through sleep monitoring, and performance monitoring including training status, VO2 Max, recovery hours needed, weekly training load, and more. Also a good basic smartwatch with regard to receiving messages and alerts when in proximity of your phone, with apps available to extend functionality if you are into it
