You can trigger one from the earth may tap or you can just pop this cover open and you hold the button down and you get that little alert. It gives you 20 seconds to cancel

 Here you have the home screen, you have messages you have, check for messages you have tracking, you have your position, you have your position, while you're moving, you have your Bluetooth connection and you have your weather now on the home screen. If you hit the ok button, you can get the most of the common functions pretty quickly like a preset or tracking. They're all right here which comes in handy. And to get back you just hit the back button

 So cool feature to have if you are going to use your phone. Now after you send, you get this little spinning indicator telling you that it is broadcasting and then that little crosshairs when it is done. When someone receives your message, it looks like a regular text message and you just click on that link there and you can see it. Loads the topo map and somebody can just go on there and zoom in and see exactly where you are

 here's one that's 0.2 miles away. Navigate and now let's just tell me to go in this direction. Here you can see I've got a little compass and if I turn around telling me I'm doing the wrong thing and that's how it works

Like many others here, I've been stalking this sub and have learnt an incredible amount of invaluable information. I now face as small conundrum, and was hoping you guys might be able to give your advice.

Since ultralight is as much about gear as it is knowledge (including knowing oneself), I'm hoping this is a relevant question and in accordance with the rules.

**Background**

Having moved to Colorado in 2020, I've gotten massively into hiking as a form of fitness and enjoyment. I've completed a bunch of hikes at sub-13000ft of varying distance, elevation gain, terrain, and difficulty. I'd say I'm in good shape (workout 5x a week with a mixture of weights and cardio).

As a natural progression, I decided I wanted to get into backpacking with a goal of completing a 3-4 night trip by the end of summer (more below). I'm more of a hiker than a camper, especially as I'm solo, and prefer getting up early and hitting the trail to cover distance.

I decided to join a 2 day, 1 night camping class where I learnt the basics of camp craft, decent navigation, and reading maps. The [route](https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7021245/state-forest-state-park-north-loop) I did was 30 miles long, and 5,000ft elevation gain. I loved it, and all the things I thought would be weird were actually okay (aside from sleep, which was a little strange!).

The issue is, I was learning with a very experienced guide and was not solo...

**The Conundrum**

I want to go on my first solo trip, and achieve the goal I set myself. 

The route I planned on is called [Capitol Creek Circuit - 45 miles, with 15,000ft total elevation gain.](https://caltopo.com/m/C28C) It's a more secluded, harder, and supposedly more beautiful trip than the famous Four Pass Loop in Aspen, CO.

I've read all the route descriptions, comments, weather forecast, etc. I've read up on thunderstorms and how best to judge them, bears, LNT, gear selection, etc. I have my gear dialed in, which I also tested on my first backpacking trip above ([Lighterpack](https://lighterpack.com/r/sg91jv)), and I loved my purchases (feel free to give feedback if you have time!)

And yet, I have niggling doubt in my mind as to whether I'll be okay, by myself, on the route. I'm a little bit of a YOLO type of person, but I don't think this is a YOLO type of thing to do.

So...

**Questions** 

No need to answer these directly, I'm putting them there as prompts:

1) For those of you who transitioned from going with someone to going alone, how did you overcome any worries/anxieties?

2) At what point did you go from worrying about trips to being excited/confident?

3) I read up about all the craziness that could happen to a person (trees falling at camp, bears, critters stealing food, thunderstorms, injuries, being solo, etc.), and to some extent feel it's working against me in terms of creating fear. How did you deal with this?

4) If I go clockwise, my first campsite is 8 miles in. If I hate the solo experience at night, I can always turn back and cut the trip short. The issue is on day 2 and 3 when I'm deeper in - there won't be an opportunity to really bail. Do you ever feel worried about the 2nd/3rd nights of your trips?

Advice on Going Solo

  The Tech then decided to check the Test Message function and sent one to my unit. I had the unit outside in the yard for about 8 minutes while still on the phone and walked to the street in front of my house and held the unit over my head to see if satellite connectivity would improve. At about 10 minutes, the test message was received and the Tech's response was:  "Hmmm, interesting." I then sent a few other Preset messages from the unit, then downloaded and set up the Earthmate app for my iPhone XR

  That night from our first camp at 7811 ft elev with a 360 degree clear view of the sky, I sent another Preset and it took about 25 mins to complete.  My companion sent multiple Presets from his InReach mini, while we were standing side-by-side, and his completed times ranged from 10-20 seconds.  I subsequently sent 3 more Preset messages from elevations of 6400 up to about 7800 where the sky was unobstructed by trees or mountains. I continued to test sending Preset messages to determine how long it takes the unit to acquire the satellite and found the range from 45 seconds up to 30 minutes under unobstructed skys

  While writing this review, I tested sending a Preset from my backyard and it took about 20 minutes to complete and the battery charge went from 100% down to 96%.

 The majority of the 'time required to send' were in the 20-30 minute range.  I found that the battery dropped about 5% after I sent 7 Preset messages during this trip where I turned the device on to send and then turned it off after the message transmission was complete.  While writing this review, I tested sending a Preset from my backyard and it took about 20 minutes to complete and the battery charge went from 100% down to 96%.

InReach Mini "Poor GPS Strength" & battery life

 It also only weighs 100 grams, so it's a very lightweight device. Some of the improvements that Garmin made were to battery life as well as how it charges. So the Garmin Inrh Mini 2 uses Usbc charging, which is awesome. I love Usb-c cables because you can put them in either direction and it's going to go in no problem

 If you don't have clear view of the skies and you get 10 days of battery life, so you'll get that sort of reduced battery life if you're in a tree, forested area, or in canyons like I am right now. For real world usage, I get about seven to eight days of battery life with the Inreach Mini 2. So that's with it being connected to my phone, sending messages now and then, checking weather, as well as not having the perfect conditions for being able to connect to satellites. Unity 282 uses the Iridium Satellite network for all of its communication, so that's how you're going to connect in order to send an Sos message in order to get support, as well as for sending messages through the two-way communication system that it has

 if you're looking to navigate and I've loaded routes on here and follow them and it's not as convenient as having contour lines as well as other trails on the map, it's still really easy to use and a good backup navigation tool. Another feature that's really cool with the Inreach Mate 2 is that it has a track back feature, so it's always tracking where you are and then if you do get lost, you can just turn on that track back feature and it's going to take you to the start of the trail. I've already touched on the fact that the Inreach Mate 2 has two-way messaging capabilities through the Iridium network. So what that means is that you can send a message from your inreach made device to any cell phone number or email address out there

 You can use that in order to navigate via compass if you need to, as well. Because it's connecting to four different satellite constellations, you have pretty accurate Gps and while you don't have dedicated topo maps or landscape maps on the device, you can load up routes onto here from the Explore app is which is what it connects to on your phone and then you can follow that breadcrumb trail. if you're looking to navigate and I've loaded routes on here and follow them and it's not as convenient as having contour lines as well as other trails on the map, it's still really easy to use and a good backup navigation tool. Another feature that's really cool with the Inreach Mate 2 is that it has a track back feature, so it's always tracking where you are and then if you do get lost, you can just turn on that track back feature and it's going to take you to the start of the trail

 The Inreach Mini 2 uses a 950 milliamp hour battery and Garmin advertises that. That will get you 60 days of battery life performance if you have it in 30 minute tracking and have clear view of the skies. If you don't have clear view of the skies and you get 10 days of battery life, so you'll get that sort of reduced battery life if you're in a tree, forested area, or in canyons like I am right now. For real world usage, I get about seven to eight days of battery life with the Inreach Mini 2

Watch This Before Buying // GARMIN INREACH MINI 2 Review

 Used the SOS on the Garmin and a ranger was there within the hour to help me get my guy off the trail. 110% worth it.

I use this for offshore sailing, but that is beside the point for my main concern for this product, which is Earthmate and the Iridium cost for its value.  The on-device user interface is clearly insufficient for sending messages, or even reading received ones. The Earthmate app is meant to be the primary way to use the inReach Mini. And that would be fine, except that about 50% of the messages the inReach device received never arrived at the phone through Earthmate

Super unreliable mobile phone app. Service is over-priced compared to competition.

 That text messaging feature is part of the Earthmate app. That's something that you can actually download off of the app store. You can see exactly how it works. You can also view some tutorials on Garmin's website, but it's really cool because I can pull up the map on my cell phone and I can see exactly where I am

 What I found to be the most useful feature for it is the text messaging because if I climb up to a certain altitude, I lose all functionality of my cell phone as far as sending and receiving phone calls and being able to send and receive text messages. However, with the Garmin being able to receive and send those text messages, it doesn't matter what altitude I'm at or what kind of train I'm over, I'm always able to keep in touch. As far as keeping in touch goes, this is another really neat feature about this device. It's called their map Share

I just moved out west and National Forests are a new concept for me. I love the idea of wild camping but I’m honestly kind of freaked out about the idea of being alone at night with no reception. I’ve done plenty of established camping so sleeping outside isn’t a new concept for me, I’m just having trouble getting over this hump. There is so much to explore out here and I don’t want to have to pay fees every time I want a weekend get away!

Any words of advice on how to get more comfortable with the idea?

I started backcountry camping as a female last year and am a bit apprehensive of going off on multi-day trails where there is no reception as I am solo. I have done it before, but honestly don't feel safe. I have been considered the garmin for awhile just costs alot same with the plans. I'm comfortable finding my way around with map and compass but  just being able to reach someone if there is danger
