Garmin recently updated the Mini (to the “2”), with an improved battery life, expanded storage, higher resolution display, connection with a greater variety of satellite systems, and a more powerful USB-C connection (keep in mind that the first iteration is still available for a $50 savings, which will get the job done for most). And regardless of what model you land on, there are a few downsides to have on your radar. First off, Garmin’s subscription plans are pricey, especially for those who use their messenger just a few times a year: A month on the most basic Freedom plan will run you almost $50 (a $34.95 annual program fee plus a $14.95 monthly fee), whereas 20 credits on the Bivy Stick cost just $18. Further, the device is fairly dependent on a smartphone to work efficiently—if you want a standalone messenger, the expanded interfaces of the SPOT X and inReach Explorer+ will make life easier (the latter offers nice glove-friendly buttons too).  This is a protected case here, a hard covering to prevent any accidental presses of the sos button, so you have to flip it up in order to press it, and that exposes the sos button. Looking at the left side, you do have your toggle switch for up or down arrows, which you can go through the selection menu and then right under that you have a covering that covers the charging port. Now, we'll get into that in a little bit more detail, because the charging ports are slightly different, the power button is located on the top and you do have your iridium antenna on the top. You also have these little things here, these little holes, so you can put like a toggle switch or something like that on the back

 You click on that and then you have track back and it would load your most recent course and you can zoom in by toggling on the buttons and you would just click. Ok and go, and it would actually take you back to your original starting position so using your breadcrumbs that it left behind now you can do something similar with the mini, but what it does is you have to manually, go in and set the breadcrumbs for it To leave and then that will also use a bit more battery in the process, so not as efficient as the mini 2 is in that regard, another cool thing with the mini 2. Is you have the access to get your weather on the device as well? So you can click on weather and it tells you a forecast based on your location there and, as you click it, you can get more details as well. You can update

 But the having the garmin explorer app just really makes the the user interface a whole lot more of a friendly experience uh when you're using your phone paired with the mini 2.. Another cool thing about the mini 2 is there's a feature called trackback, and this is something where it actually leaves a breadcrumb by behind you as you're walking, and does this automatically without draining any extra battery life, so pretty cool at that and how you would access That is, you would click on the ok menu here. You then scroll down to navigate

 You have a built-in digital compass, so if you like reading maps and following that and don't want the weight of an extra compass, you can use your garmin inreach and how you do that you just scroll down to your navigate. You click on that and then you have your digital compass that comes up and you can turn it and it shows you where you are and all that so pretty cool that you have that additional feature there, where you do not have that with the original mini. Now one of the coolest updates that we have with the new mini 2 is the ability for it to connect to a garmin watch. So i have the finnex 6 here and i can scroll down and, as you go down to the menus, it's actually going to create an inreach app and from there

* Apps: The Garmin Connect app is the primary app, it's fine not great, there's other third party apps that integrate as well but I haven't investigated much. The desktop browser version of Garmin Connect is also fine, not great, but has some more functionality. Garmin Explore is the other phone app, it's really clunky but necessary for mapping functionality, including adding GPS tracks to the watch to follow, it gets the job done but not in a friendly way. I've read the issues are related to integrating legacy software and devices from past corporate mergers

* GPS Tracking: There's several modes of tracking with maximum features turned on you can get most of a day tracking, or months with minimum features. My daily exercise I track with most every feature on and it's pretty darn accurate, I have a more battery conscious mode that tracks day hikes maybe every 20s and that one is good enough. I took it on a short flight in a cessna and that was pretty accurate as well.

 Garmin Explore is the other phone app, it's really clunky but necessary for mapping functionality, including adding GPS tracks to the watch to follow, it gets the job done but not in a friendly way. I've read the issues are related to integrating legacy software and devices from past corporate mergers. I'm not sure what the rest of the market has to offer for comparison.

 It's hard to find a smartwatch with better battery, and in the backcountry it's easily several weeks between recharges or you can find a sunny spot to top it off with a few more days of charge if you get desperate.

 Tried a few things to get him up (including using a dog sling that another hiker happened to have), but there was no way he was going to be able to hike back. Used the SOS on the Garmin and a ranger was there within the hour to help me get my guy off the trail. 110% worth it.  And the pup is OK now!

Auto Track issues

 The freedom plan started around 14 and go all the way up to 35, and that really depends on what you want to do with the device on top of the freedom plans. There'S, of course, commitment plans, so you can sign up for a full year and get a lower price point, starting at about 12 bucks a month. So you do save a little bit money there and if you're somebody who will use this thing multiple times a week or a month, that's probably probably worth doing to save a little bit of money. But for me, like i said it's not something i use all the time, so i'm going to sign up for the freedom plan with all that said, let's talk, final thoughts on the inreach mini 2

 The great thing about this breadcrumb map is that it actually has a passive track back function. So if i click this top right button here, you can see, i can click navigate and i can go ahead down and click track back and when i do that, it'll actually track me back to the start of my activity so actually generate a course to get You back to your car or the start of your activity without even having a built-in course from your previous activity. This is a great feature to have, because even if you're, not tracking your location, you can still get back to the beginning of your activity. In a pinch, if you're lost or something like that from within the navigation tool, you can also navigate to waypoints that you have saved, or you can do a course which comes over from garmin connect or garmin explorer

 The inreach mini 1 is still perfectly acceptable, but if you do want the latest and greatest you want the navigation features built in you want that compass built in, and you want to be able to use the new garmin explorer app. Instead of the older earth made app, the in reach mini 2 might be the way to go, and with that we've reached the end of this video. Garmin InReach Mini 2 - Updated UI, Navigation, and App Experience - This Could Save Your Life!

I just moved out west and National Forests are a new concept for me. I love the idea of wild camping but I’m honestly kind of freaked out about the idea of being alone at night with no reception. I’ve done plenty of established camping so sleeping outside isn’t a new concept for me, I’m just having trouble getting over this hump. There is so much to explore out here and I don’t want to have to pay fees every time I want a weekend get away!

Any words of advice on how to get more comfortable with the idea?

Battery life: with one check in the system completely died the first day of use. It was fully charged and as stated it is suppose to last for 14 days with 10 minute pings. Unfortunately, it did not. 😪

 The other thing on this unit, that's different to the older one. It will actually um lock on to not just gps satellites, to give your position on the ground, but also um the galileo system and the qzss. That'S giving you the advantage that there's more satellites to look for. So, if you have got not agree as good of you as the sky and you've got a better chance of getting a quicker satellite lock and a more accurate lock for your position on the ground

If you have got friends and family monitoring you or using the sos button, so it's still got the iridium that we use for the safety side of things

 You can also use it like the original inreach for map sharing and which is basically sharing your tracking. You pay various subscription levels, so this subscription based more information on our frequently asked questions on the subscriptions. So when you subscribe and pay for package, friends and family using satellites can track where you are and see you moving across a map, you can also send shortcut messages, letting friends and family know everything's, okay, but you're not necessarily needing help and also you can pair It with an app on the phone which i'm going to talk about in more detail to type um individual messages like you would type a text message, but you're actually using the iridium satellites that the unit has to send those messages. So a lot of the features that we saw on the original um in reach itself, so i'm just going to move the carabiner out the way on the usb cable

 Um we've mentioned about the navigational side of things and being able to follow potentially a course, and what they've also done is with this new unit um, you can do a track back so like a breadcrumb trail and follow your footsteps of where you've been. You could do that on the old unit, but you had to start the tracking now, sometimes you find scenarios where you may turn the unit on. So it's ready if you needed to use the sos button, but you're not actually started the tracking. So if you hadn't started the tracking you weren't able to do a track back little emergency feature, i would i would call it our safety feature on the new inreach mini 2 is: whenever you turn the unit on, it will automatically start recording every 10 minutes
