 I don't really, it doesn't bother me with it being out. In fact, it gives more grip in the palm here, so that's how I do it, but if you want to, you can retract and lock the blade. Here's your blade, serrated edges. Yes, this is very well used, so there's going to be a tiny bit of rust on this

 I honestly don't remember how much I paid for it. Like I said, I've had this for years and used it all over, all over the world I've used it, and it never fails me. This is my favorite multi-tool. It's light, it's small, it's got everything I'd ever need, it's basic, and it's cheap

 Next, you've got a small flathead screwdriver, then you've got your large flathead screwdriver. Final tool on here is some actually really good scissors. These are Fiskar scissors. They have a spring in here, as you can see right here, which gives you your pushback

I have been looking into multitools as a gift for an upcoming military academy graduation and would like to ask your opinion… The two most “recommended” are the Leatherman surge and the Gerber mp600. I know that they are not the same price category, but can you give me any insights about which would be “better”? (I know its very personal choice as well)

Multitool for military academy graduate

 The blade does not look as good and as a previous review said I can definitely confirm that the nail nick in on the wrong side. There is a cutout or recess on the frame of the multitools but the nick is on the other side. The blade does not look all that effective either.  This seems an obvious error in manufacturing

Hi everyone,  I live in Australia and recently received two of these tools via Amazon. I spoke with Amazon before ordering and told them what an earlier reviewer said about the knife blade being changed. Amazon told me dont worry I would definitely receive the ones pictured. The photographs all show the older, original blade style

 Who is responsible when their customers eventually end up cutting themselves because of this ridiculous design, I wonder?  All photos of the items on Amazon are different and feature the old style blade, so indeed what you receive is different that described. I spoke to Amazon and they apologised, they were good over the issue as they always seem to be.  Aside from that the build quality is excellent. Not a mark on either of them and they function really well

  But that aside the blade issues are a headache for me because a blade is one of the most commonly used tools for me.  I tried to contact Gerber days ago. No response and I just wrote to them for a second tIme. Even the photos of the mp400 on the Gerber Gear site show the old style blade

 I don't know what you guys call them, but we call them a skill saw, at least that's what I called it. This pouch has a bunch of little compartments in here you can see, and this is where I used to keep different types of bits, Phillips and Robertson, things like that. It's still held together, you know, considering how much abuse this thing has gone through, it's doing pretty good. And here's the actual multi-tool

 Once your hand get caught inside there when you were reefing down on something, it generally left you a nice pinchy mark. And yeah, when your hands are really, really cold and you pinch, man, that hurts even more, I find. So I used to use these all the time for bending rebar wire or tie wire. And of course, I use the cutters a lot when I was stripping wire

 So I've mellowed out and I'm glad that I have. But this was a big part of those days. So of course, when you're a framing contractor, you're going to have a lot of tools and to run 40 men, I had many compressors and many nail guns and many hoses and many extension cords and many skill saws. We call them skill saws

 Pinchy, let's look at else I used. I used the Phillips a lot. Again, I used the Phillips a lot on extension cords and on hose clamps and anything to do with that compressor. I found it to be very handy

The key features I'm looking for are pliers, scissors and screw driver, with spring pliers a bonus. Currently I'm looking at the Gerber mp400, 600 or Suspension, or the Leatherman Wingman. I'm also considering buying another Wave, but I'm wondering if there's something new I can try out. Any recommendations?

Recommendations for Leatherman Wave replacement

 You have to try and dig a finger (or part of a finger) inside the multi-tool to get the knife out, and it almost certainly requires two hands. Single handed operation was a high light of the former tool. That said, it s now just an average (but good) multi-tool. If I could find a legacy model I would buy it

This is a slight redesign of my favorite multi-tool - and it is not as good as the former tool (with the same part #). As noted, the knife blade is different. The open slot on the Knife blade that is used to move the knife out is no longer completely through the blade and instead is facing the INSIDE of the Multi-tool. This makes it nearly impossible to actually open up the knife blade single handed

Strongly recommend upgrading the mp400 to a Leatherman oht. I do miss the scissors but the spring loaded pliers and onehanded opening of every tool are a massive improvement.
