[, Music, ], hey guys, welcome back to Arab and outdoors today I have a review for you on a new product that I've just added to my kayak PFD, and that is right here. This is the Thurber River shorty water, sport knife great for kayaking canoeing, whether you're doing whitewater or not. It'S a great all-around knife. It'S made by Gerber right here in the United States of America in Portland Oregon

 It has got a very good clip on it and the clip is made to where it will fit on a PFD. You know most PFDs now have that square little spot where you can put a knife, and I had the option of putting it this way. This way this way - or this way, I chose to put it this way, because I can put it in easily and if I need to grab it in an emergency situation or not just reach up there. It is easy in easy out now this sheath it doesn't move

 High polished, stainless steel blade, so it's gon na be very corrosion resistant, which is great when you're in the water all the time it has. A glass filled. Nylon handle lots of grip points comfortable to hold very, very sharp, serrated edge. The reason is in all see, a dude Edge is because this is made for cutting away rope, paracord fishing line, anything that you might encounter on the water in a boating situation and boy

 It'S just a good all-over river knife, so i i guess i'd suggest it. I didn't go into this video thinking. I would suggest it. I thought i would like this one more, but in this short amount of cutting rope, i'm going to say this one is actually kind of nice for kenny roblin

 I love this knife uh it's i like the fact that it's a long serrated edge on one side. So it's a lot of cutting power for ropes and what we're using this for as guides and boaters is to cut ropes. So you want a nice long, serrated edge and this edge is dull and that's really nice, because if i'm cutting rope with this serrated edge, i can cut really hard like this. If i want, but if i can put my thumb here and push it does even better and i'm really tempted to - and i need to cut rope quickly

 This isn't scientific evidence, but i'm going to say from this round of tests. This is a better knife for cutting rope than the classic river shorty that's great to hear, and so, if you plus you get a knife that you can use, you have a regular knife if you need to cut something with for as an accessory knife. Now a lot of people will say only use your river knife for rescues, which is adequate. I don't see how cutting tomatoes with this is going to be a problem, but it might be for you, but if you did want to cut tomatoes having a nonsteroidal part is maybe kind of nice

 So you want a nice long, serrated edge and this edge is dull and that's really nice, because if i'm cutting rope with this serrated edge, i can cut really hard like this. If i want, but if i can put my thumb here and push it does even better and i'm really tempted to - and i need to cut rope quickly. So if this knife is sharp, i will cut my thumb doing this, where if this side is weak, i can really push on the rope and cut it and which helps a little bit. So i like this, so i like this long seared edge

 And this really shouldn't be a struggle for any rescue blade, and yet I have suffered, had people on deck that have tried to use their blades to cut some of our working ropes, and they just are sawing through them, they just cannot get through them. Gerber has an excellent, excellent cutting surface, and that's part of the reason that I'm doing this review, because out of everything else that I talk about this knife, it has to be able to cut, it has to be able to perform, and that's something I just don't see with other ones. If you think you like the handle better, the retention better, ask yourself for a look at that blade and see, can I actually cut a rope if I need to, because otherwise what's the point in carrying it around or buying a better version of this if it won't cut through any rope. And I realized paracord is just what I have in the studio here, I've cut much thicker stuff, even if it has to take two swipes through some good half inch navy rope, this will do it

 I wear a safety jacket called a Mustang Survival Jacket, I'll put in a photo of me wearing it with a big old grin on my face here, but as you can see, even on the lapel, I always have this knife on me. I will tell you, working in this industry, I have had a chance to look at many other options out there, and every time I see or I hold or I try somebody else's blade, I am reminded how wonderful the Gerber River Shorty really is. For the price, it can't be beat. There are other ones, you can go on kayak websites, they'll charge you $100, you can buy the titanium version

 For the price of this thing and the actual necessity of having a life saving device like this on the water, hands down, this thing is going to be on my survival jacket, on my PFD, on my person anytime I'm out on the water. Certainly this is not a necessity for a lot of my viewers out there but anybody professionally looking for a rescue knife, for kayaks, for guiding, like anything I do, it's hands down for the price, the quality. This is it. This is the best rescue blade right now I've found for water rescue and entrapment, entanglements, you name it

Having been in the industry and tried many rescue blades , Im sold on the Gerber River Shorty. For just under 30 bucks it cant be beat.

The sheath is almost worthless

Decent river knife, I just wanted something smaller.

Fit my NRS Chinook lash tab, just needed to install it using a dull flat dinner knife. The NRS Chinook vest I have is 8 or so years old and there was even a velcro strap to help secure the knife on the vest. Knife fits my need for an emergency knife while ocean kayak fishing. Recently capsized my kayak near breakers and thought my paddle leash could have been a great strangulation cord so the knife purchase could be a life saver
