 If you keep moving on, it has a floating bridge, now this bridge adjusts up and down and will apparently move backwards and forwards. I wouldn't want to try sort of moving it around too much but you can do that. The string tree and tailpiece is classic Hofner and is the same as all of their violin basses and of course the pickguard that is well known and makes it sort of outstanding and you'd recognise it straight away as a Hofner. In terms of electronics, well it comes with what Hofner would describe as Hofner's Ignition Series staple pickups and I guess that's Hofner's way of saying they're made in China

 In terms of build, well it's a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, spruce top, flame maple sides and back and it's finished in this vintage sunburst. The materials are exactly the same as those used in the German instruments, although quality of the material I suppose is something that you could kind of question. But still looks really great and if you were to look for any blemishes, you'd be hard pressed to find anything particularly outstanding on it. So I'd probably give it an 8 or 9 out of 10 in terms of build quality

 I'll probably look at changing the strings on this at some point. Like I said, I don't mind the round wound strings, I think they kind of give it a bit of a modern edge to it. But certainly changing them around to la bella or diadarios or something along those kind of lines will make a difference. Other than that, look, there's nothing else that you really need to do it and it's certainly not a toy or something you would just hang on the wall and have as a sort of a gimmicky show thing

 It is hollow bodied, short scaled, 22 frets but if you're a smaller player or smaller fingers or just like something that's lighter and something you don't have to kind of hang around your neck or the weight of a solid body instrument then you'll probably find just a great instrument to play. It's fun to play, it's more like playing a guitar than just playing a bass and that's one of the things I really like about it and I can kind of see why McCartney probably would have liked using it. The terms of the control system, well you can kind of see here you've got these two volume controls, so one for each pick up and then this set of sliders. You have a treble on, a bass on and what's called a rhythm solo switch

I'm an absolute beginner, plunked around on a couple of basses and I've really enjoyed it, but I want to seriously get into it. I'm looking into getting a Squier, since I've heard it's a good starter and a lot of people have suggested it. I'm going into Guitar Center later this week, and as a young woman who is pretty inexperienced, I'm really nervous, because I know how a lot of more experienced female musicians are treated there. I've done a lot of research and I hear a lot of different things, so my first question is, what kind of amp is your favorite for beginners? And second of all, mostly for women musicians, do you have any advice for what I should/should not do as a new, young player? Thank you so much!

Young female bass player anxieties

 Now personally speaking, the first thing I recommend anyone doing when purchasing this bass is take the round wound strings off, straight away, and invest in a set of flat wound strings for that iconic Hoffner sound. The nickel pickups are very susceptible to scratches and tinny tones, which the round wound do not help at all. The second thing to do, if you so wish, is to take a Phillips screwdriver and just slightly raise the height of the front pickup so that it matches the height of the bridge pickup. Both pickups output at almost an identical level, so why the front pickup is so low is beyond me

 The treble switch is an on-off switch for the bridge pickup, and the bass engages the neck pickup. Turn on one pickup, and you'll turn off the other. So if you wish to have both pickups on simultaneously, then you'll have to in fact flick both switches to the off position, not the on. Alright, stick with me here, we're almost there

 So if you're going to go for that Paul McCartney pit guardess look, then you may suffer slightly from ugly holes that the guard leaves behind in the face of the body. Incidentally, another cost-cutting diversion from the original bass is the lack of a zero fret, just before the nut, which massively attributed to the original violin bass's woody yet brassy tone. And instead, we just have to make do with the plastic nut. However, all that being said, these are just nitpicks, because on the whole this bass really is a great bang for your buck

 But because the body was completely hollow and the parts were repurposed guitar parts, they were relatively inexpensive to make, and that's how they were branded. Now the model that we're going to be looking at today is a reissue and slightly different take of the 1960s classic that was famed by The Beatles. However, unlike its ageing counterpart, the ignition bass is crafted out of China and not Germany, hence the attractive low price tag at around £355. So in this video we'll be diving into this bass's specs and tones, and we'll see if it can stand up next to its famous ageing German grandpa

So, I've been looking into purchasing my first bass. I have no previous experience with stringed instruments (I play piano tho), but I'm well aware that my hands are quite small, and I assume that might cause me some technical challenges. That said, I know that standard-sized basses are way more common and if I ever decide to upgrade from a newbie instrument, I assume there are probably less options (or at least less budget-friendly ones) for a short scale bass than a standard one. So what should I do, should I purchase a short-scale or standard sized bass as my first instrument? Thanks in advance!

Newbie - short scale or standard size?

 And it feels like a proper violin bass as well, it's totally hollow, which is pretty insane. We've had some 5 grand Hofner basses here at PMT, and to be fair, they do feel awfully awfully similar. This is made overseas though, not made in Germany. It's got a spruce top, a flame maple back and sides, Hofner Ignition staple pickups, a lovely wooden bridge here, and a trapeze tailpiece

 And the funky control panel, which come on violin basses. Each pickup has its own volume, there's a solo and rhythm switch, which boosts the signal when it's in rhythm, the signal is slightly attenuated, attenuated means quietened, made quieter. And the way these work is, bass and treble on, when they're on, it turns off the other pickup, so if both of these switches are on, there's no sound. So when the bass is on, it turns off the treble pickup, when the treble's on, it turns off the bass pickup

 This is made overseas though, not made in Germany. It's got a spruce top, a flame maple back and sides, Hofner Ignition staple pickups, a lovely wooden bridge here, and a trapeze tailpiece. Lovely C-shaped maple neck, it fits in your hand just fantastically. Rosewood fretboard, it is a 30 inch scale bass, so it's a little bit shorter, nice mother of pearl tuners up top

 And the way these work is, bass and treble on, when they're on, it turns off the other pickup, so if both of these switches are on, there's no sound. So when the bass is on, it turns off the treble pickup, when the treble's on, it turns off the bass pickup. What's funky as well, when the bass is on, it adds an extra capacitor as if a tone control was turned down. You kind of get a lovely, mellow, Hoffner violin bass vibe

Over the weekend I had a chance to play a hofner style guitar (the violin body) and it completely changed my perspective of bass. I've never liked how bulky and heavy most bass guitars are. And the violin body made it soooo much easier to switch over and start playing. I already play bass-ey riffs on guitar so I don't have a SHIT TON of work to do.. and I understand the fundamentals. The style my band plays is mostly Grateful Dead and we play other things from Zeppelin to Hendrix to Floyd and everything in-between. But mostly jammy kind of stuff. I guess my main question is can anyone suggest a bass that's in my price range (not looking to spend more than 500) and also satisfies my desire for quality and mobility?

So... If you were a new bassist again, what bass, amp, and pedals would you go with? Why? What did you actually start on?

(I'm not necessarily asking for recommendations for myself, but if you want to give me personally advice I'll take it. Budget is &lt;$500 u.s. for bass, another couple hundred for amp and I'll most likely just steal my guitar pedals.)

You're a beginner again - rebuild your rig!

 The biggest difference here other than the neck thickness, this one being wider, is this has the zero fret. This one doesn't. I would think that would affect the sound, this is a direct into the sound tone of the fretboard to the body. But let's check it out and we'll see

 I will do that to finish it. Again, ebony bridge. You can see here I did have to bump the small fret to the next line here to get this to intonate properly. I think it might be the strings I put on here

 But on the other hand, if you put round wound strings on a German Hoffner, it might sound like that. So from my standpoint, I try to compare everything to the German bass with flat wound strings on. The typical McCartney, Beatle, warm, woody sound bass that I grew up listening to and playing in bands. So let's put this on the bench and check it out and see what we got
