2021 Icelantic Nomad 105 Lite Ski Review | Curated - YouTube

I’ve been skiing for my entire life and consider myself a fairly advanced skier. I’m looking for a ski that super playful and light, something that I can just play with and jump around with a lot of flex and pop. Nothing that’s purely a park ski. I’ve looked around and I’m considering the Black Crow Camox or the Line Chronic. Can someone make a recommendation based on my experience and preference? 

I’m 6’4 205lbs if that info is useful.

 Hey guys, it's Chase from Gear30, and today we're going to be talking about the Isonic Nomad 105 Lite. Isonic's Nomad 105 Lite is part of their backcountry lineup of skis. Same exact profile and shape of the regular Nomad 105, but it's got the featherlight wood core, a full polonia core. It's a little bit lighter weight than the regular Nomad

I have the nomads and they’re super stable up to about 60-65 mph. They blast through crud but are flexible enough for fun jibs and the poppy/surfy skiing style that I like. They carve really well on groomers for their width and flex pattern. It’s important to mention that they’re twin tips so you have to size accordingly and if your weight is too heavy for the 105 you can always go up to a 115 which is a stiffer ski

So the time has come to move on from my current setup. Right now I have 2016 Soul 7’s in 188 with Shift bindings on them. They are my first ever pair of skis and I purchased them used two years ago when I got into the sport. I put on the shifts for their second season as I got into touring and didn’t have the funds to buy a dedicated touring setup. The shifts worked well for most of the season until they didn’t.. After my most recent spring mission they seriously malfunctioned on me during the skin and I want to get rid of them. Sad part is my skis have been mounted twice and suffered some significant damage to the bases after an accident earlier this season. I absolutely adore the way they ski but unfortunately it seems like it’s time for them to be retired. It turns out I like touring quite a bit as well and do not want to have a hybrid setup anymore so now I need recommendations for two skis.

For reference I’m 6’2, weigh 190-200 lbs depending on the season and ski “big mountain” style in resorts in CO. I enjoy skiing steep terrain, hitting small cliffs, moguls, trees, and trails with jibby features. I find myself at Mary Jane most resort days. And truly, I haven’t really skied more than a day on any other skis, so I don’t have much to compare my soul 7’s to. It would be ideal for me to do a demo day, but resort season is about over and I want to pick up some kit over the summer on deals. 

For my in bounds ski, I want something similar to the soul 7’s. I really love how easy they are to maneuver and jump off of things. However I have noticed (as many others have) that they aren’t as stable at higher speeds. That’s okay since my ski style is more jump off everything I can/ turn any bumps into a feature rather than blast down trails at high speeds. Ideally something a bit stiffer but still on the playful side of things. Preference to soft snow conditions as well. I think something around 103 +- 5 underfoot would serve me well for what I like to ski. Soul 7’s are 108. 

As for my touring ski, I’m not quite sure which direction to go. I ended up skiing variable snow for probably 60% of my tours this season and powder for the rest. The soul 7’s really let me down in the variable/ choppy/ typical non powder CO touring snow. I’d like to say I want a powder ski for touring but I know that’s not realistic. What’s a good compromise ski that prioritizes variable conditions well but still holds its own in powder (and isn’t a total stiffy) ?

I’d really appreciate any and all recommendations y’all have. I’ve had my eye on Moment Wildcats for the inbounds ski, but haven’t really sparked too much of an interest for any other skis. Maybe the J Friend? If how I ski sounds like you, tell me which skis you love and why!

I've been rocking 2011 Faction Wednesdays with traditional camber and 93mm underfoot. They do everything on the east coast pretty well and I've never really wanted more out of my skis. 

That said, there are plenty of decent mountain bikes from 10 years ago, but a current entry level all mountain bike absolutely walks the best bikes from 10 years ago. 

Is it the same case for skis?

I am looking to get a new pair of skis to join the quiver. Right now I currently have a pair of Black Crow Camoxs, a pair of N168 Northlands, and a pair of Stockli GS world cup Fis skis lmao. I used to race years ago and still love ripping groomers and hauling ass. But in the past few years, I have found that I have the most fun sending it through the crud and jumping off of shit. I also enjoy the steeps.

 I think I am looking for something more playful than my daily driver black crows right now. they seem stiff for some of the things I want to do, ie butters. I don't spend any time hitting rails and I don't see myself starting but I do love the kickers and rollers in the park on a nice spring day. Right now there are 5 skis I am looking at that will become my new everyday skis. the Sir Francis bacons, the black crow atris, the Sakanas, the deathwishes, the Hotshots and the Bent chetlers. If you have any other suggestions I am all ears thanks!
