 Now to be clear, it's okay, but that's not really what the CPU is meant to do. Four core, eight thread, they're kind of limited these days for things like that. For gaming, it did very well. So an i3 right now, reviving the old trope of an i5 is enough for gaming, as we said, with the i3s that supplanted the i7-7700K previously, an i3 is in this context enough for gaming, especially for a budget build, and you're likely to be bound somewhere else if you're really restricted on budget anyway, then this particular CPU for gaming, and even with a high-end GPU, it's tuned pretty well

 We didn't run into any games in our test suite where it was dropping frames, certainly not to the extent of being unplayable. So i3s used to be fairly unplayable on some games, and they developed a stigma because of that and it was well deserved. But that's broken with this one and with the previous i3s most recently. So this one we're good with, we'll let you know about the 12400 if we think that one's a better deal or not, but check back, and then we're obviously looking out for AMD stuff right now, they have nothing to compete in this price class, we don't consider the 5600G a competitor, and even if we do, it loses, so it's irrelevant

 PCs are getting affordable again, at least in one aspect. This is the i3-12100F. The F skew here means that there's no IGP on it. It's a little bit cheaper as a result

 There's one caveat here that we really want to highlight, which is that we are working on the 12400, and Intel has something like 22 total SKUs it's announced, we're not going to test all of them, but we're going to look at the i5s too, and we haven't done that yet other than the 12600K. So give us a little bit, we're going to be back probably pretty much immediately with the 12400 review, and then we'll make a firm judgment on should you buy this one, or should you buy the 12400 from a value perspective. What we can say though in an absolute sense is that this CPU does just fine for the gaming we've tested, and we have no problems recommending it for a budget gaming build where the money matters, either because you need it for other things in your life, that's totally fine, you should focus on those things anyway, or just because you're cost-conscious and you like to really min-max your budget on what you're buying, maybe you want to spend the money on a GPU instead or something like that. So this CPU does well for its price category

 They are all P cores. There are no E cores is actually quite simplistic But also when you think about this It's a four core eight thread processor that we would have called amazing back in the day around the 37700 for example or the 3770 however, you'd like to say it Because they are not overclockable It actually does mean that it makes a fair amount of sense as long as you're not thinking long-term And maybe upgrading the processor in a few months or a year that you could jump on to the b660 platform now there are Like platforms below this which you could find cheaper motherboards But I'll only ever recommend you something that I have tested and I have spent some time with B660s, although at this present moment in time. It's only these two because Asus is still yet to send any But what it does mean is I have tested already a DDR4 and a DDR5 motherboard and they were identical and one of the things I will say is I personally Wouldn't spend any extra money going for the DDR5 because the memory itself is going to cost you more money straight away At the moment the pricing is around 80% more expensive to kind of jump up to an entry level one Further up the pack and go from DDR4 to DDR5 But if we're going for a hundred and twenty pound processor, you're not going to want to spend two hundred and fifty pounds on Memory the difference between the two motherboards is only about ten pounds as well So that's not a massive amount of saving but by the time that you've bought the motherboard bought your DDR4 memory you are going to be able to get quite competitive then and Save money for what in reality is going to be your GPU and that's probably going to be the most stressful and expensive purchase that you're going to end up making Now I'm going to pop the results up because the gaming If you have a look between the pack, there's actually not a lot between the two processors that we've tested But there's also not a huge amount of difference when you look at the more expensive Intel's that we've already tested We've mixed in some of the lower AMD's and stuff below just for a little bit of Variety if we gave you all the results that we had the graphs would be a 300 miles long So we've condensed them down for you Also, I test all of my processors in exactly the same way So all of the older Lake processors have been through this exact system same motherboard same graphics card. It was always around the kind of 56 to 58 mark And that was with the 12300 as well it never spun up the fans on the Cooler didn't go above 1150 rpm the fans on the graphics card didn't really budge either Yes, it is a very expensive i3 system

 It's just kind of an idea for you But anyway, I'm not added up how much it would cost because this isn't the sort of thing that I normally do or like To do but we've got a few cheap Graphics cards being launched over the next month or two So I thought it might be nice to be able to throw them in this Now it does mean I'm gonna have to try and find the time to test some more graphics cards in this to make it fair But we'll see how it pans out. You can let me know what you thought of me Chucking in a curveball because obviously I wouldn't normally do this I just stick with the fact that I spent two days testing the processors and I don't then Normally spend another day building the system and retesting stuff. Intel i3 12100 and 12300 CPU Review and Build Ideas

Excellent Budget Processor

 Of course one would have to go with DDR4 memory that is. Not a big deal since there aren't any too big noteworthy performance differences when it comes to CPU performance between DDR4 and DDR5 right now. Things are looking real good for the i3-12100 when it comes down to power consumption. Not a surprise actually, certainly a very power efficient CPU

 At a mere TDP of 60W the temperatures are of no concern at all. Even the tiny stock cooler can handle the 12100 without any issues. So to sum things up, all I can say is the Intel Core i3-12100 offers a lot. From a pure technical standpoint maybe nothing too special really, but certainly a great deal from a price to performance perspective if you will

 DDR5 memory of course currently is kinda pricey. Still for the sake of completeness, I decided to benchmark with the latest memory type out there. The CPU I will install on my trusty Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR5 motherboard, but quite frankly since we're dealing with a CPU coming with a locked multiplier, thus not officially supporting overclocking, from a cost perspective it doesn't make any sense to grab a motherboard with the Z690 chipset. It would be wiser to either go for H670, B660 or maybe even H610 to keep the platform costs down to a minimum

 So my choice of memory also is way too extreme, that's 32GB of G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 6000MHz. Those Alder Lake CPUs I reviewed earlier before paired with the very same motherboard didn't quite run with 6000MHz, so I had to content myself with a memory clock of 5800MHz. Well with today's i3-12100 I had to drop down one step further at 5700MHz, at least only a drop of 100MHz

Insane BUDGET GAMING CPU with DOWNSIDES... -- Intel i3-12100

I've been running Blueiris NVR on an i7-4770 that someone threw away for a few years and it worked fine, pre-AI based detection. Once Deepstack was made available for AI detection in Blueiris the detection times were painfully slow, maxing out at 15,000 ms (15 sec).  Now with this CPU (without a dedicated GPU), AI detection is in the 1,000-3000 ms range; still quite high, but much more responsive. I've also swapped out Deepstack for SenseAI which has drastically improved overall performance and detection

  I swapped the included CPU fan with an inexpensive aftermarket cooler and it's running fast and quiet.

  Now with this CPU (without a dedicated GPU), AI detection is in the 1,000-3000 ms range; still quite high, but much more responsive. I've also swapped out Deepstack for SenseAI which has drastically improved overall performance and detection.  I swapped the included CPU fan with an inexpensive aftermarket cooler and it's running fast and quiet.

Inexpensive processor for solid performance

 So those really are the key specifications. Now for testing the Core i3-12100F, I'm using the MSI B660M Mortar Wi-Fi DDR4 motherboard with 32GB of dual-rank dual-channel DDR4 3200CL14 memory. And this is the same stuff I use for all of our DDR4 testing, and it's typically faster than single-rank DDR4 3800CL18 memory in terms of performance. Now the K-SKU Outer Lake CPUs have been tested using the MSI Z690 Tomahawk Wi-Fi DDR4, again using the same memory, and all boards have been updated to the latest BIOS revision

 The newer 12th gen part will set you back around $35 for the CPU, and then about $30 for the motherboard, but you do end up getting a much faster system with a significantly better upgrade path, should you choose to bolster your CPU performance in the future. All said and done, you can land the Core i3 12100F for around $120 US, a decent B660 motherboard for $140 US, and if you require the supporting DDR4 memory, a 16GB DDR4 3200CL16 KickMe had for just $60. And that means the total system upgrade is just $320 US, about what you'd pay for a Ryzen 5 5600X. That configuration is more than capable of tackling all of the latest games at sufficiently high frame rates, and I suspect it will be better than a make-do type solution for at least the next few years

 Welcome back to Harbor Unboxed. Okay, so about a month ago now I purchased the Core i5-12400 for an in-depth review and I found that for $180 US, which is the price for the F SKU, it represented excellent value, especially for gamers. The only hiccup being that the B660 motherboards weren't really, the availability wasn't great at the time, the boards that were available were a bit pricey, but I expected that that would resolve itself over the coming weeks. Three weeks have now passed and B660 boards are finally becoming available, though not as many as we would have liked to have seen and pricing is still a bit inflated, though that is of course to be expected as we saw the same thing happen with B560 for a few months and even AMD's B550 motherboards suffered from similar issues

Quad-Cores Are Back! Intel Core i3 12100F Review, Much Better Than Expected

 it has enough PCIE lanes in the CPU that I can have an SSD and an RTX 3060 and plays very well at 1080P gaming. I'm getting solid FPS for the games that are played where it does matter to me so for what the intended use is for it's perfect. Too bad intel is only winning my business at the low end.

This product was very affordable, my entire build was ~$1,006 USD. At this price point $130-140 totally beats out anything in the past that I have build anywhere near that price for the performance on the chip, especially looking at past choices. it has enough PCIE lanes in the CPU that I can have an SSD and an RTX 3060 and plays very well at 1080P gaming. I'm getting solid FPS for the games that are played where it does matter to me so for what the intended use is for it's perfect

Good Deal for Low End

 The iGPU isn't anything special, and going with the "f variation" will save you a couple bucks. However over all this is a VERY capable CPU that's hard to beat at the sub-200 dollar price point.

I used this chip in am entry level gaming PC and it's performance blew me away. This may not be the fastest i3 out there (at the time of writing that would be the i3 12300, but good luck finding it!) With 4 cores and 8 threads this CPU punches above its weight class. The iGPU isn't anything special, and going with the "f variation" will save you a couple bucks. However over all this is a VERY capable CPU that's hard to beat at the sub-200 dollar price point

Don't count this CPU out

As luck would have it I was preparing a 10th gen i3-10100 system the day before. Just got done building an new system with the i3-12100 and what a drastic and noticeable increase in speed over the 10th gen part! Well done Intel! And the new stock cooler with a copper slug and nicer looking shroud is much appreciated. Temps are very cool on this low end system at 42 C under load and 29 C at idle.
