As a regular user you won’t even notice the difference. Biggest motivator to get this is the lack need of a GPU whenever it’s not available. Biggest competition for this price point is the i5-12400, but the price of a decent LGA 1700 motherboard is what killed that decision for me.

I really thought I needed to upgrade my 1060 6gb to a new GPU to play the newer games and multitask without stuttering, but up i got such a good deal on the i5-12400 (CPU + Mobo combo for $280) which made such a world of difference compared to my old i7-6700. No more stutters, far smoother gameplay in Destiny 2 and Elden Ring.

I9-9900k still holding value?

No at all the i5 12600k is a lot better and consume less power. Even the 6 core i5 12400 has better single core performance and similar multi core performance. As for upgrading if you have a gpu less than the rtx 3070 I don't suggest to upgrade because you will not notice a performance different maybe wait the 13gen then you can get the i5 13600k or if you need a gpu upgrade get the i5 13400 with midrange RTX4000 like 4060 or 4070 we will see what the new cpu and gpu gonna perform like.
