I'm trying to pick a new machine and could really use some help deciding! 

The machine will be used to make almost all of my clothes. I'm also taking a fashion design course, so it will be used every day for a variety of materials.

I have a Janome My excel 18w, though have just temporarily moved to a new country and I can't find that machine where I am. 

I have previously had a Singer Start which did not function properly for what I needed, so am being very picky to make sure that my new machine is reliable.

I also prefer a mechanical machine, though am flexible. I'm hoping to pay around 500 USD, though that is flexible, too. 

Any info or recommendations would be very helpful!

...then, the bottom thread guide just fell off, the auto thread trimmer occasionally stopped working (maybe 10% of the time) and now it is making a horrible rattling inside the bobbin on fast speed, past 30 days, so I'm stuck with it- I'll keep using it, but quite sure it will have to go back before the warranty has expired

I'm a very experienced sewer, and have never had any of these issues even with cheaper machines I've owned. Maybe third time will be a charm (assuming I don't have issues with the warranty)

Doesn't hold up to moderate use

  Update:  I have not even owned the machine a month and already the automatic needle threader is not working. I just wrote the seller to determine how to get a new machine as I am furious that I have spent this much money, and am already having problems. I absolutely loved this machine until now and want a replacement that functions correctly.

Had a few problems

 I tried everything to solve it (new needle, oil under bobbin, etc.) I could only resume quilting by switching from cotton thread to poly about halfway through my project. Now it will no longer zigzag stitch unless it’s a really narrow stitch, it just looks like a straight stitch because it’s skipping one side. I haven’t used it all that much, it’s really unacceptable that it needed repair so soon after purchase, I’m so disappointed

Maybe I Got a Lemon?

 Easy to thread and create bobbins. Working great for quilting, project bag making, and making clothes. Also bought a serger for clothes seams though. Love that you can cut the thread with the foot pedal

Presser Foot NOT User Friendly

 The needle threader stopped working after just a few little projects. This has been aggravating. The same happened on my friend's exact same machine.
