Bad Gear - Microkorg - A Hipster Synth???

I feel like I'm fighting them all the time to find that tiny spot where it doesn't sound awful - not even good but just not awful. I feel like went from painting with every colour imaginable to painting with shades of beige. I've not even made a four bar loop that I'm happy with for six months let alone a full track.

THOUGHTS ON EP. 3 Korg MicroKorg PT A Retrospective - Virtual Analog Synthesizer

I want to preface this by saying that I understand that we all have different priorities, and there's nothing inherently wrong with having or wanting more/ better stuff. This is simply something I've been thinking about lately.

So, like many people seem to, I got into hardware during (or really, right before) lockdown for all the usual reasons - immediacy, boredom with software, screen time, stimulus money, blah blah blah. Over the last year I have bought and sold multiple pieces of gear - some I kept for half a year (Minibrute 2s) and some I kept as little as a month (TD-3). I went from *I want to play around with this because it'll be a fun change of pace* to *I need to buy this new piece of kit because it'll help me get better at thing X* because *marketing works.* And you know what? That second statement was almost never true. Some devices - like the MPC One, a midi thru box, a patch bay - really did open up new possibilities for me, make my setup more flexible, or make something easier to do. But the majority of the products on the market are different flavors of a similar umbrella of sounds, and while I'm a much better songwriter than I was a year ago, that has very little to do with the gear or even my sound choices, and far more to do with the amount of time I spend writing music.

Toward the end of last year, I slowed way down on my gear churning after convincing myself I *needed* a Subharmonicon. I didn't, and sold it after 6 weeks even though it's a great piece of kit. I started getting really familiar with the devices I've had longer, and started learning the newer ones in a more concentrated fashion. I found new features, and new uses for features I knew of. I started sequencing from my DAW when I couldn't play the part I had in mind, and keeping handwritten notes about what I was doing when a session ended so I could come back if to it I hadn't recorded it. My keys playing went from *lol what am I doing* to I *can play an okay melody*. My song structures, sonic choices and mixing improved dramatically.

As I've learned more about the gear I have, the GAS that a lot of us talk about has gone away. Not completely, but mostly. It's fun to read about new gear and look at reviews, etc, but I no longer feel like I *need* a new knobby beep boop light box to make the music I want to make. I just need to get better at using the stuff I have. It's infinitely more fulfilling than constantly lusting after the next Big Synth That Will Change My Music (because it won't). There are still synths I want to play and even own at some point, but right now I'm perfectly content with what I have, and it's a marvelous thing.

I'm perfectly content with the gear I have, and it's an extremely liberating feeling

audio input 1 was totally noresponsive and a dead outlet audio input two worked fine unfourtanly the microphone can only be ran threw input 1; rendering the vocoder function unuseable which is a major selling point of this item and one that sold me personally on it. amazon sent a replacement right away but once again totally dead audio input 1.

 So what i'm going to do now is i'm going to fast forward the tape and see if i can design a preset and i'm going to hook up my top box, we're going to check out how that sounds all right. So i created a patch, and now i got my top box and we're going to hear how it sounds with this top box: [ Music, ], more bout, [, Music, ]. I think it sounds really good with the top box. It'S not as strong as it sounds

 Oh it's. You know and uh, but it's still a great sounding synthesizer. So what i'm going to do now is i'm going to fast forward the tape and see if i can design a preset and i'm going to hook up my top box, we're going to check out how that sounds all right.  Definitely a emulation of analog circuitry uh, also featuring the same synthesizer engine as the ms2000, which is pretty impressive to have that large synthesizer base built into this frame here. [, Music, ] blowing stuff a lot lower stuff here: [ Music ], you you with it, but you got four boys so so when i lose that little c three, four five wow four voice comments sounds like the ms2000 sounds exactly like it. Let me know what comments does this sound like the ms2000, some of the presets [ Music, ] kind of like a vintage string machine? Let'S go to the a side, more bass, lazy! You can mess with the filters on here. You got kind of like a macro filter set up here, so you got some built-in delay effects
