Hey all! I'm a musician currently working on my debut project. I currently have a Minilogue, however I'm somewhat new to synthesizers. Anyways, I'm looking to expand my tone horizons with an FM synth. I was thinking the DX7 because I have some experience using Dexed, and I've heard only good things. However, I've been having trouble getting my hands on a DX7 in good shape, at a half decent price...

So, are there any good, budget friendly alternatives, modern or vintage?

This is my first Volca. Coming from digital music making world, this analog instrument feels limiting at first. The fact that you can’t really save the actual tone and only a pattern made using it is an “aha” moment. Yet the sound this instrument generates is worth the trade off

This Volca is beautifully designed: just look at the red digits of the display and internal reflections around them. Very analog. The sync does not work correctly.

Sounds are good and the analog control is amazing for the price, but without use of a separate sequencer the 1-measure lines it produces are really only fit for certain genres of music (stuff with very minimal, short basslines such as acid house). If you want to make old school acid or techno, this is for you. However, if you're looking to make anything with a little more funk / any sort of a chord change, the Volca Keys might be a better buy as you can stretch out its 16 steps into more measures. Here your only option to emulate that would be to program individual parts for each oscillator and play them separately

It is good for what it is, but if you are looking to do anything even relatively advanced, you need to spend at least a couple hundred dollars more. The sounds that you can get out of this are actually quite varied, and as a simple synth it is pretty good. But the sequencer is essentially useless, and it is somewhat difficult to control the synth via midi unless you have a dedicated sequencer for it (i.e

 Volca is really cool, but the PO drums aren't the sound I'm looking for - they are kind of harsh and cold. Now, I make some drum patterns in Ableton and jam with Volca. I would like to use Ableton only for record /mix / master stuff. 

 I've bought korg volca fm and PO-12 Rythm. However I'm not satisfied with this setup. Volca is really cool, but the PO drums aren't the sound I'm looking for - they are kind of harsh and cold. Now, I make some drum patterns in Ableton and jam with Volca

 You will eventually damage your Volca. So please, use a headphone splitter for splitting headphone signals into two. But don’t try and invent something like ‘a backwards splitter joining two signals and yay! We have a backwoods $5 mixer!’ No…you don’t. You’ll actually need to get a real mixer with resistors and circuits designed to safely join multiple audio signals into one signal path

You can NEVER use an audio splitter cable in REVERSE!! There’s a good reason those cables are called ‘splitters’ and NOT ‘joiners’. Because they are meant for one purpose and one purpose only
