 This makes the locked structure of the U-lock much stronger. And it gives further protection from twisting and leverage attacks. Having said all that, let's not get carried away. Wirecutter claim that this lock can't be cut by bolt cutters

 First of all the shackle has changed from the old bent foot design, which only locks on one side, to a double deadbolt shackle that locks into the crossbar on both sides. This in itself provides a massive security boost, as it means the shackle must be cut twice, once on each side, to open the lockup. And it also gives extra protection from twisting and leverage attacks, that are commonly used to defeat lesser U-locks. They have also made some scoop-shaped cutouts in the tips of the new shackle

 So I thought I'd write a full review, where I tackle this issue in detail. I'll also, as always, look at how secure it is, and how easy it is to carry around. Bad lock. Alright customer service.

Quality appears good, but some issues with the lock:  1) Yes, the lock has a fatter shackle of the 4 series, but it has the bent shackle instead the double deadbolt of the large evolution series. There's no point of having a very heavy shackle when someone can break off the non bolted end with the same effort as the 2 series locks. Remember, these things are heavy and more weight should offer you more protection  2) If this works in your neighbourhood, great, but I simply couldn't get this to go around the tire/frame/and post that I was locking it to. Better off with the full size model in my opinion  Am returning this for the standard 2 series lock

I may consider buying the full size series 4 evolution if I decide to start leaving my bike in unsafe places overnight, but this has simply not been what was hoping for

The key on this lock is difficult to engage. It gives me trouble every time I unlock it.  I should have gotten a longer d-ring, and a longer cable. (My fault)  The mounting system to carry the lock is well designed, but where on a bike can you put it and have the kick and cable out of the way? I just toss the lock in my saddle bag

  That's the good news, but prepare yourself for some of the more baffling and frustrating instructions you'll ever encounter for what should be a simple install. The "Tugblock" frame mount for storing the lock is optional, but unless you want to put your U-lock in a bike bag or have it dangling from your rack, you'll probably want to suffer through the install. The cable lock comes the a velcro tie that you could attached to the stored U-lock, but I'll keep that part in my bag.  The instructions are not only cryptic, they're printed in tiny, tiny font on a piece or rice paper with a few dozen folds, just to make sure you lose your place as you try to navigate what should (and is) a straightforward install
